This case will not even sniff a court room untill
2008. Unless the Owner/team makes a decision he will be available. Unlike the majority here, I still believe in innocence until proven otherwise. That being said, the Falcone's are lucky they didn't trade Schaub (sp?). I think they are a better team w/him under center. Oddsmakers seemed to feel that it wasn't much of a drop off in the past based off the lines when he started.

I'm sure he was probably aware of what was going on, but don't bust your noose out until a jury hears both sides. The Prosecutor is probably a UVA alum w/a grudge and a self serving motive....who knows?

Yeah, the Falcons traded Matty to the Texans.

Joey Harrington will the starter if anything happens to the dog murderer.

Simple oversight I am sure.

Can't wait til someone plays the race card. I live near atlanta and thats all they said on the radio. If this was manning no one would have said something :scared

Um.. If vick robbed a bank and they had it on video..

This is not about the race card. It's about justice in America. Michael will get " White Mans Justice." OJ sponsored it ! In the old days very few Blacks received it, because they did not have the wealth. Michael will get what OJ Simpson did because his money can buy attorneys. Those attorneys are part of a system, a network that has been forged for years in this Country. American justice is coming for Michael Vick. The American media loves this kind of story. This story will divide America not by race but by economic status. The media will focus on the poor blacks that defend Michael and make it look like, all blacks are for him. To look at this story in the right light, you have too look at it for what it is. We have a rich privileged American accused of a crime. He is one of the lucky ones that can match the government with a defense that can stand up to the wealth of the prosecution that they will topple upon him. Rich & privileged people get off every day !!! The media will not only show the poor blacks that are for Michael Vick, but they will show white America that is against him, the same white America that was outraged by the OJ verdict. All OJ did was get WHITE MANS JUSTICE !!

Thank God Vick is able to match funds vs. THE GOVT. Most people can't. You seem to be offended by someone defending themselves vigorously against an accusation? I know I would use every possible resource I had to defend myself had I been accused of a crime. While I do agree that an innocence/guilt outcome is more influenced by income brackets than race- I certainly would rather walk into a court room as a white guy (and I am white thank God.) There are always exceptions and situations, but why do you think the brotha's don't trust the system and showed that by backing OJ. Because they have been gettiing the shaft forever! I certainly am not a contributor to the NAACP, but it seems like alot of (white)people have a hard on for Vick. IMO

.Just kidding. I hate that scumbag mf'er. He wont see any jail time unfortunately.

I wish they would just execute those dickwads responsible for animal cruelty. They are truly worthless fodder just crowding up the already over populated Earth. Worthless shit not worth the sperm that created them. It goes back to the good ol' sayin...why couldnt they have just been one of their mama's blowjobs.

I would volunteer to pull the trigger for the Feds on this one.

You are going to kill a man because he killed dogs ?? Think about it. Is that justice ? I'm not here to defend Michael Vick, he's not my cup of tea but does he deserve to die ?

The NFL speaks out of both sides of their mouth...

Pac Man Jones is suspended for a year without a conviction. Now, NFL encourages everyone to allow the judicial system to work before placing responsibility on Vick.

Pac Man is a thug...but, he is going to have a hell of a lawsuit if he sues NFL for his suspension. Especially if Vick is allowed to play this year.

PacMan certainly won't be nominated for PR Man of the Year, but his Union should be standing behind him. The last I heard he hadn't been convicted of anything and his employer (the NFL) pulled his card based on allegations. I'm not familiar w/his contract or how it is structured, but I will assume this is a $3 mil hit. Gene Upshaw is a puppet of the owners. It seems obvious that Pacman is a real dumbass at the least, but the guy has not been convicted of shit. My advice to NFL players- don't have dreads/gold teeth or you will be subject to a harsher set of standards.

Side note- I hate dreads unless they are on Bob Marley. Other than when Larry Johnson snagged Polamalu by the locks (which somehow drew a penalty?), you never see any classic dread takedown. I hope to see that in the near future

The media tryed to portray that most black people thought that OJ was innocent. From my experience most black people thought he did it but were happy that he got off. Most of poor black America is used to seeing blacks not getting equal time for the same crimes and not being treated by police and government the same way as people with money. I think the OJ verdict was not only good for poor blacks but all poor people in America. They should have learned from that verdict : If you work hard and acquire wealth you to can ensure your self a shot @ justice in America. AMERICAN JUSTICE = MONEY !!! fact or fiction ????

this cements your thinking. However, I disagree that it was good for america. Racism is never good no matter if it comes from "two wrongs make a right way of thinking".

Also, lets not forget about Johnie Cochran, a black defense specialist, who the african americans were also cheering for. Cochran took the white man's way of the justice law system and won with articulate mastery and the main selective "race" issue (furhman)

This thread is full of FAKE OUTRAGE. YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. Think about it. There is not a thread in this section & you have to go down10 deep in the religious & politics section to find the thread that 42 viewed about the abuse of children in the Catholic Church. I have nothing against Catholics, I am one . We will put dogs over people, the #'s say we will here at Madjack Sports. Everyone can line up against animal cruelty, I understand that. My question is : What is the underling cause for this attack on Michael Vick. Is it all about the animal abuse or is there something else here ?

Will Vick's legal troubles lead to a suspension?

Will Vick's legal troubles lead to a suspension?

Quarterback Michael Vick and the Atlanta Falcons took a huge hit a week before the start of training camp.

Vick is expected to be suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after news broke Tuesday evening that Vick was indicted by federal authorities in connection with dog fighting in Virginia. The indictment followed a three-month investigation.

While Goodell was not reached for comment, two sources said the commissioner has been monitoring the Vick case since April, when investigators initially found evidence of dog fighting at a home Vick owned in Smithfield.

"Where (Vick) is in the most trouble is that he lied to the commissioner," a league source said. "He told (Goodell) in April that he didn't know anything about this. The commissioner gave (Vick) every chance to come clean, be straight about what was going on. Instead, he just kept denying it."

The NFL released a statement that both cautioned in not prejudging the case and said Vick would be evaluated under the league's personal conduct policy.

"We are disappointed that Michael Vick has put himself in a position where a federal grand jury has returned an indictment against him," the NFL statement read. "We will continue to closely monitor developments in this case, and to cooperate with law enforcement authorities. The activities alleged are cruel, degrading and illegal. Michael Vick's guilt has not yet been proven, and we believe that all concerned should allow the legal process to determine the facts. The matter will be reviewed under the League's Personal Conduct Policy."

Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States, urged the league to take "appropriate" action.

"Dog fighting is a serious federal and state crime, and enforcement authorities have treated this investigation with the seriousness it deserves," Pacelle said. "We will continue to work with law enforcement with the intention of bringing to justice any individual who contributed to this cruel and violent treatment of animals.

"Now that Michael Vick has been indicted, the NFL should not hesitate to take appropriate disciplinary action under its internal guidelines."

The indictment is a long way from proof of guilt. In 1999, former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tony Martin faced money laundering charges in federal court and was found not guilty.

Vick and three other men ? Purnell A. Peace, Quanis L. Phillips and Tony Taylor ? were indicted on a pair of conspiracy charges that carry a total maximum of six years in prison if convicted.

"That indictment is brutal," said John Goodwin, the lead investigator from the Humane Society. "The details in there are amazing. That's much stronger than most of the cases I've seen."

The league was made aware by federal authorities of the indictment Tuesday afternoon about an hour before the news was released to the general public.

Until then, federal authorities had been tight-lipped with the NFL, not revealing any details of an investigation they commandeered from local authorities in May. The NFL had been in constant contact with local police in Surry County until that point and believed that Vick was going to be indicted, sensing the local authorities had enough to build a case against him, according to one of the sources.

"Obviously, we are disturbed by today's news from Virginia," the Falcons said through a statement issued Tuesday evening. "However, we are prepared to deal with it, and we will do the right thing for our club as the legal process plays out. We have a season to prepare for and training camp opens next week. Our plan is to continue to do everything we can to support our players and coaches."

Now, the question is how fast will Goodell react and how long will he suspend Vick? Vick has yet to be convicted of a crime or even be arrested during his six-year career, but Goodell has made player conduct his most significant issue through his first year in office.

Tennessee Titans cornerback Pacman Jones has been suspended for one year although he has yet to be convicted; Jones has been arrested or called into questioning by police at least 10 times since entering the league and faces charges over a shooting in Las Vegas in February.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry has been suspended for eight games for multiple transgressions and former Chicago Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson is also facing an eight-game suspension whenever he is signed by another team. The Bears cut Johnson in June after he was pulled over in Arizona for impaired driving.

Other NFL teams are eager to see how Goodell will react to the news on Vick. A Titans source said in May that Tennessee management was watchful of how Vick might be treated in relation to how Jones was punished.

"There's a lot riding on this one," a league source said. "Perception is really important right now for the entire league and (Goodell) has set the bar pretty high. I think the one thing going for (Goodell) if he's going to suspend Vick is that he gave Vick a chance to tell the truth."

Vick met with Goodell in New York, shortly after the raid on Vick's property, before the NFL draft in April. Vick told Goodell and said publicly that he never went to the house and that he was unaware of what his family and friends were doing there.

Reports by media outlets in Virginia disputed Vick's story. Witnesses said that Vick had been seen there many times. The federal indictment also lays out a much different story, saying that Vick participated in the commerce of dog fighting. The indictment said that dogs and participants were brought in from as far away as New York and Texas for fights.

The indictment also specifies that the raising and training of dogs were conducted at the home. The home features a series of kennels and a small building in the back where fights were supposed to have taken place.

The indictment also lays out a detailed and ugly description of how the fights were run, including how dogs that lost fights were killed afterward, if necessary. Dogs were often shot, drowned, electrocuted or strangled if they could not otherwise be saved.

"We're talking about activity that went on for years," Pacelle said. "Yes, these are accusations. But for him to have claimed that he knew nothing about the activities there is unbelievable ? that's why we think the league should suspend him under its conduct policy.

"If you're just going to wait for the judicial process, why even have a conduct policy?"

If Vick is suspended for any length of time, the Falcons are likely to turn to backup quarterback Joey Harrington as the starter. Regardless, Vick's progress under new coach Bobby Petrino is expected to be thwarted as he deals with all the legal issues associated with the indictment.

Calls renewed for dropping Vick endorsement deals

Calls renewed for dropping Vick endorsement deals

By Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports
July 17, 2007

The Humane Society of the United States will renew its call for companies using Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick as a spokesman to cut ties with him after a federal indictment for dog fighting was issued Tuesday.

"We're planning to make those calls first thing Wednesday," said Wayne Pacelle, the president of the Humane Society. The organization asked Nike in June to drop Vick, but the company declined.

Now, the organization plans to extend the call to companies such as Rawlings, Powerade and Kraft. AirTran has already dropped Vick and Pacelle said that the Boys & Girls Clubs of America has recently done the same.

"We don't have all the contracts or know what they're all worth," Parcelle said, "but we know that they have language in those contracts that allows companies to sever ties with an athlete after something like this happens."

Vick and three others were charged with competitive dog fighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines.

In 2005, NBA star Kobe Bryant lost numerous endorsement deals after he was accused of rape in Colorado. Charges were eventually dropped against Bryant and he later regained his endorsement deal with Nike.

The accusations in the indictment against Vick include extensive details about cruel treatment of the dogs, including the way dogs were killed if they were not deemed fit for fighting. Dogs were shot, strangled, electrocuted or drowned if they either lost or were considered unworthy.

In addition to the reflection Vick could cast on his sponsors, some companies could be afraid of protests from groups such as the Humane Society and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Vick indicted in dog fighting case

Vick indicted in dog fighting case

/ Associated Press
Posted: 5 hours ago

NFL star Michael Vick was indicted by a federal grand jury Tuesday on charges of sponsoring a dogfighting operation so grisly the losers either died in the pit or sometimes were electrocuted, drowned, hanged or shot.
The Atlanta Falcons quarterback and three others were charged with competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines.

The operation was named "Bad Newz Kennels," according to the indictment, and the dogs were housed, trained and fought at a property owned by Vick in Surry County, Va.

The 18-page federal indictment, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, alleges the 27-year-old Vick and his co-defendants began the dogfighting operation in early 2001, the former Virginia Tech star's rookie year with the Falcons.
The indictment states that dogs fought to the death ? or close to it.

If convicted, Vick and the others ? Purnell A. Peace, Quanis L. Phillips and Tony Taylor ? could face up to six years in prison, $350,000 in fines and restitution.

Telephone messages left at the offices and home of Vick's attorney, Larry Woodward, were not returned. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Vick's mother said "no comment" and hung up.

"We are disappointed that Michael Vick has put himself in a position where a federal grand jury has returned an indictment against him," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said.

"The activities alleged are cruel, degrading and illegal. Michael Vick's guilt has not yet been proven, and we believe that all concerned should allow the legal process to determine the facts."

Vick and the Falcons are scheduled to report to training camp on July 25.

"Obviously, we are disturbed by today's news," the team said in a statement posted on its Web site, apologizing to fans for the negative publicity.

"We will do the right thing for our club as the legal process plays out. We have a season to prepare for," it said.

John Goodwin of the Humane Society said the manner in which losing or unwilling dogs were killed was especially troubling.

"Some of the grisly details in these filings shocked even me, and I'm a person who faces this stuff every day," he said. "I was surprised to see that they were killing dogs by hanging them and one dog was killed by slamming it to the ground. Those are extremely violent methods of execution ? they're unnecessary and just sick."

Vick and the others are accused of "knowingly sponsoring and exhibiting an animal fighting venture" and conducting a business enterprise involving gambling, as well as buying, transporting and receiving dogs for the purposes of an animal fighting venture.

About eight young dogs were put to death at the Surry County home after they were found not ready to fight in April 2007, the indictment said. They were killed "by hanging, drowning and/or slamming at least one dog's body to the ground."

The indictment also outlined a rough chronology:

In March 2003, after a pit bull from Bad Newz Kennels lost in a fight, it said Peace consulted with Vick about the losing dog's condition, then executed it by wetting it with water and electrocuting it;

In March 2003, after two Bad Newz Kennels dog lost fights to dogs owned by a cooperating witness, it alleged that Vick retrieved a bag containing $23,000 and gave it to the owner of the winning dogs. One of the fights had a $20,000 purse;

In the fall of 2003, a person witnessing a dog fight involving one of the dogs trained by Bad Newz Kennels incurred the ire of another cooperating witness by yelling out Vick's name in front of the crowd during the fight.
It also said that after establishing Bad Newz Kennels in early 2002, Vick and the others obtained shirts and headbands promoting their affiliation with the kennel.

After a police raid on the property in April, Vick said he was rarely at the house, had no idea it may have been used in a criminal enterprise. He blamed family members for taking advantage of his generosity.

On Vick's Web site, he lists his birthplace as Newport News, "a.k.a. BadNews."

Purses for the fights ranged from hundreds of dollars to the thousands, and participants and spectators placed side bets, the document said.

Local authorities have been investigating the allegations since the April 25 drug raid at the property Vick owned. On June 7, officials with the Department of Agriculture executed their own search warrant and found the remains of seven dogs.

Surry County prosecutor Gerald G. Poindexter said he didn't know of the indictment before it was filed, and said he's not sure how the county will continue its case.

At the start, authorities seized 66 dogs, including 55 pit bulls, and equipment commonly used in dogfighting. About half the dogs were tethered to car axles with heavy chains that allowed the dogs to get close to each other, but not to have contact ? an arrangement typical for fighting dogs, according to the search warrant affidavit.

The indictment said dogfights were held at the Virginia property and dog owners brought animals from six states, including New York and Texas.

In a search warrant executed July 6, the government said the fights usually occurred late at night or in the early morning and would last several hours.

Before fights, participating dogs of the same sex would be weighed and bathed, according to the filings. Opposing dogs would be washed to remove any poison or narcotic placed on the dog's coat that could affect the other dog's performance.

Sometimes, dogs weren't fed to "make it more hungry for the other dog," it said.

Falcons beat writer for the AJC, said this morning. That were not impressed with Harrington in OTA's. He said IF something were to happen with Vick, he would not be suprised to see DJ Shockley get some time under center.

BTW. ATL soprtstalk is killing me. We still have some people out there supporting Vick and saying we need him to win.

I want to know what Clinton Portis will say on the matter.
