COLLEGE SATURDAY

***BEST BET
ARKANSAS STATE (-6)
h Louisiana-Monroe
2005 ? L, 27-31

PAST
At ULM. Arkansas State committed 13 penalties, was -3 in Turnovers and was burned twice by Monroe?s big-play combination of senior QB Steven Jyles, to WR Drouzen Quillion. This held them back in a game where they dominated time of possession, 34:18 to 25:42.

PRESENT
Home. Since last season, Arkansas State has had extra practice time last year to point for this season, by virtue of having won the Sun Belt and earning a bowl bid. They got a leg up on everyone else in the conference in that department, and last week, in Sun Belt opener, went out and waxed FIU in workmanlike fashion. Jyles and Quillion are no longer with the ULM program, and the latter was an NFL draftee. One of the team?s leading receivers was suspended indefinitely last week, and the #1 QB Kinsmon Lancaster is hurting, as is tailback Calvin Dawson.

Arkansas State?s new RB Reggie Arnold has had two 140-yard games already against this caliber of defense (Army, Florida International). Here comes another. ?He?s a guy that is going to get you a lot of yards after contact,? says head coach Steve Roberts.

***BEST BET
UNLV (+16)
at Colorado State
2005 ? L, 27-31

PAST
Season finale for two-win UNLV, Colorado State needed it for a bowl. Nevertheless, UNLV played its best offensive game of the season despite being banged up and looking ahead to the end of a bad year. QB for Colorado State was big-armed Justin Holland, who averaged 8.2 per pass attempt for the season.

PRESENT
CSU is logging only 58 plays per game, and their rushing output is down by almost 50% per carry. Last season, they logged 68 plays per game. UNLV is much healthier than they were the last time the teams met, especially on defense, and has three new, experienced transfers in the secondary to do a better job against the pass, against a different CSU passer with a weaker arm than Holland had. UNLV has also worked a new running back into the mix ? David Peeples is 30 pounds heavier than the 5?6, 165 kid he finally replaces. Colorado State?s defense does not force turnovers ? they have 1 this season.
