Romanians protest wage and pension cuts

Romanians protest wage and pension cuts

In one of the largest mass protests since the fall of communism, around 50,000 Romanians took to the streets of Bucharest on Wednesday.

They are furious at drastic cuts to state wages and pensions proposed by the government to reduce the country?s ballooning budget deficit.

?I am a pensioner after 40 years of working and they want to cut 15 per cent of our pensions. How will we live from now on?? asked one angry woman.

Protesters say they should not have to pay for the government?s corruption. But the government says its hands are tied.

Romania is deep in recession and has already received one instalment of an IMF loan package in order to be able to pay wages.

?It was the government?s decision to move ahead with concentrating more on the expenditure cut side,? said Jeffrey Franks, IMF mission chief for Romania. ?They feel that expenditures have gotten out of control in recent years and the best way to attack their budget problem is to concentrate on the expenditure side. This was their decision.?

The government says it has to make savings or it will not receive the much-needed second instalment of the IMF bailout. But pensioners in Romania feel the state has gambled away their living, leaving them fearful for the future.

Parthenon protest at scaffolding removal

Parthenon protest at scaffolding removal

Parthenon protest at scaffolding removal

It was meant to be a day for Greeks to unite.

But the unveiling of the newly restored Acropolis instead turned into another day of protest over the country?s cash crisis.

As the Culture Minister unveiled the recently reassembled Parthenon, one of Greece?s most popular attractions, around a 100 short-term construction workers demonstrated over alleged unpaid wages.

Used by successive governments since the 70s, some labourers complain they have not received any money for up to a year.

?The Culture Ministry has a huge need in terms of personnel and it?s been easy for all governments to use us as it?s a vote winner. But they?ve changed personnel here like people change their shirts,? said Nikos Hazomeris, President of the Culture Ministry?s short-term contract workers? organisation.

Thousand of archaeological site workers stand to lose their jobs because of Greece?s financial woes.

The government, however, has pledged to continue the restoration work which is likely to continue for another decade.

Italy to announce to deep budget cuts

Italy to announce to deep budget cuts

Italy to announce to deep budget cuts

Italy is set to join Europe?s austerity club with a budget expected to see deep cuts in public spending.

Despite insisting for months the nation?s finances were immune from a Greek-style crisis, the government of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is likely to slash Itlay?s bulging budget deficit by some 26 billion euros during the next two years.

It?s hoped the pre-emptive action will restore waning investor confidence in the Italian economy.

Like Greece, Spain and Portugal the measures are expected to include a cuts to public sector recruitment and a freeze on wages as well as reduced funds for local government
