Aretha was here in Sioux City for our huge July 4th music festival in 2015 and was fantastic. Sounds like she was also a normal person. Here is from the local newspaper a couple of days after.

Amy Hynds, Sioux City Journal

How much did Aretha Franklin like her time in Sioux City?

Quite a bit, I?d say.

Tuesday morning, the biggest bouquet I?ve seen in years arrived at The Journal office. Filled with roses, lilies, daisies ? several trips around the flower shop ? the arrangement came with a card that said: ?Thank you for your great review. Sioux City and the Concert Audience are the greatest. All the best, Aretha Franklin.?

Talk to people around town ? ones who had close encounters of the Aretha kind ? and they tell similar stories of her generosity. Staying at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, she tipped big, was kind to everyone and appeared to love her time in city.

Backstage, friends say, she was very quiet and shy. She sipped tea while she waited to go on and appreciated everything folks did for her. She loved the Saturday in the Park response, too, and was excited to see the fireworks that followed her performance.

A legend? That doesn?t even need to be said. But a nice woman? Shout it to the mountaintops. Just because you?re a diva doesn?t mean you have to act like one.

Franklin left an impression ? a big one ? that should last for years.

Thanks, Aretha, for the flowers and the great time. The Sioux City welcome mat is always out.
