wow..just saw this....he was really a great coach but the most boring..OMG.. I saw him at about 3 or 4 coaches clinics over the years.... one was an 8 hour weekend clinic with just the North Carolina coaches..thank god he only talked for about an hour.. Fogler and Williams did most of the clinic.. his book "Basketball...Multiple Offense and Defense" was a must read back then for all HS coaches...
The 4-corner before the game clock was classic....still see Phill Ford dribbling all around and no one catching him.
His "T" game offense was always great.. my kids could only run the 1st 2 options..we never could get to the 3rd option...but the 1st two worked...what I got out of Dean more then anything was his " run and jump " defense...he made if famous...I loved that and used it all through my coaching career...he always said that you should make the "run and jump" fun..My players loved it and we did make it fun....he also was the 1st coach to have his players huddle up at the FT line..once NC started doing that everyone followed... he will be missed....
I remember him coming to the NY State HS Basketball Clinic in Binghamton NY....our association always invited big time coaches but Dean accepted one year...we were all surprised....but.. there was a catch....he was recruiting a Binghamton HS senior...his name was King Rice....

Haven't had time to look into this....what did he pass from exactly? I know he was up there in age. Hopefully it was that and not some damn disease..cancer!

Any lingering bitterness among Smith's rivals has faded in recent years as his health has declined. Dementia began to ravage his famously steely memory almost a decade ago. In recent years, the man who once could recall specific plays from games he coached in decades earlier could no longer recognize some of his most decorated players or most trusted assistant coaches.

Those health issues forced Smith to make fewer and fewer public appearances at North Carolina in recent years and made it tough for his ex-players to visit him. Some did anyway out of loyalty to their longtime coach. Others couldn't bear to see him in that state and preferred to remember the good times.

Wow....pretty much goes along with old age. Been hearing a lot of stories in recent months from customers and close friends of cancer hitting them. Most of them being unexpected....just going in for normal checkups no symptoms. Absolutely horrifying

It's sad to see someone slip away slowly like that, whether it be cancer or dementia, both horrible diseases.
