If they really want to spark intrest and make it special again, it needs to be part of their contracts. I actually got excited the day leading up to the contest back when Jordan and Wilkins were putting on a show.

It had to run its course at some point. It could have only stayed interesting so long.

I'm not interested until someone can dunk from the top of the key.

Simple solution to save and make people watch and for it to be entertaining.
First the prize money for this is flatout PATHETIC. If Gatorade is not gonna shell out more winnings then find someone who will.
Second, the fans vote who they want in it like the All Star game.
If the player opts out of the contest then he is not eligible to play in the All Star game. The players seem to love being in that and would then do both.

Everyone wins with this idea.
Fans get what and who they want.
NBA gets ratings.
Players get more cash.

It's funny cause in the early 00's it went through this same dead period. Last night was horrible and I agree completely that they should can it. Dwight Howard was unbelievable a couple years back.

Here is my suggestion:

Have an invitation only dunk contest. If you haven't won it in the past you can't participate in it. Take 5 guys if they don't want to do it you scrap it completely. You invite 5 all-stars to compete against previous champs. Right now we have 4 guys we don't know facing Nate Robinson. You need name recognition.

I'll tell you one reason why LeBron won't do it and it has nothing to do with getting hurt, no money, or anything else. The reason is I don't think he could handle losing to some scrub and/or looking like an idiot. He makes the impossible possible in games and if he can't make amazing dunks he's not such a genius or if he does something that is sub par the public will be like "meh"
