some acc notes . . .

wouldn't expect much of a letdown this saturday for nc state despite last weekend's double overtime loss to fla st. it will be phillip rivers final regular season game. he's really a rah-rah kinda guy and a team leader, and i would expect the entire team to go all out in this one, especially considering that no current wolfpack player has ever beaten maryland.

in spite of being knocked back to earth in death valley, i expect duke to be all out at carolina. the players really like interim coach roof and want him hired permanently. a win over carolina would go a long way towards making that happen. duke has lost 13 in a row to unc, including a heart-wrenching squaker last year. look for the devils to be balls to the wall saturday in chapel hill.

Loophole,

I agree with you on Duke, have you seen a over for this game? UNC has one of the worst defenses in football and Duke is not far behind. As far as NC State goes my only concern will be if they can establish any kind of running game against Maryland, both teams have been banged up at RB so this game could develop into a game where each team puts up 40 passes a piece.

Joe,

I watched that Bama and Okie game but I am positive if these teams met today the score would be much worse. Stoops outcoached Shula in that game getting him on a fake punt to take the lead, but at this point in the season Bama is a shell of the team they were then due to massive amount of injuries. On the other hand, Auburn has had possibly with the exception of Notre Dame the most disappointing season in the country, many hacks picked them to win the national title and now they have to beat Bama just to go to a lower tier bowl like the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl.

Wanted to let you guys know that Tommy Bowden broke down to tears today at his weekly press conference when asked about his future with Clemson. There has long been speculation that Bowden will not be back next year at Clemson and today's press conference seemed to confirm that.

Bowden kept answering all questions directed towards his future at Clemson with 2 cookie cutter answers. When asked about his future at Clemson after this week's SCAR game Bowden answered (1) "You're asking the wrong guy" and (2) "I'm doing everything I can to prepare this team for the game THIS WEEK." (I'm paraphrasing). These words don't read much in text, but if you view the video link of the conference, you can obviously read between the lines.

This may or may not figure into the way you guys cap the SCAR/Clemson game this week, but I certainly wanted to bring it to everyone's attention.

GL as always :D

Joe,

First glance at your plays here is my take although I am still not done capping the games:

NW
Looks like a solid play, ILL has struggled all year and has issues at the qb position. Downside to NW is lack of kicking game and will they play this game close to the vest to insure they win to go bowling?

Duke
They are going to have to match points with UNC, both teams have poor defenses. Both coaches need this win, Roof to have some ammo on why he should keep the job and Bunting to take the heat off.

Hawaii
They should score early and often only concern here is a back door cover but Jones may run the score up if he gets the chance.

Wisky
So far all of my numbers are coming back Iowa, but I like Wisky myself. If they play like they did last week they will not lose, Camp Randall is a tough venue at this time of the year.

Texas Tech
Still looking at this game, liked Tech early but now undecided.

Clemson
Tough game to call US Gamecock has posted some good info on this game above. Looks like both coaches are getting some heat, Bowden may be gone even if he wins.

Central Mich
Two good running teams that will shorten the game because the clock will rarely stop so they should be able to stay inside the number.

Purdue
I question what will be the Boilermakers mental state after the heartbreaker with OSU? Clearly Purdue is a much better team than Indy.

N ILL
Too many points for me at this point.

WVU
Tough to go against this team may be one of the hottest teams in the country right now.

So Cal
I look for a huge blowout, UCLA has no offense and is very banged up. So Cal may win this game by 35 points.

Bama
up above

Nc State
Both Loophole and Ajoytoy like them, I have them circled as a possible play. \

These thoughts could change in the next day I will toss out some plays to see what you think

Marshall @ Central Florida

Seemed like the line on this game was never going to come up, but it finally came out and I jumped on Marshall at -10.5. No doubt this is a down year for the Herd but CFU is in complete turmoil and according to their website two more players were suspended from the team today for rule violations, scores and odds had this game off the board for along time this morning saying suspensions and player walkoffs. This game at one point was going to be for the MAC East title but Marshall lacks the talent that they have had in the past and CFU has imploded, Herd looked like crap against one of the best al laround teams in the country in Miami of Ohio but I will take my chances with the Herd going up against a demoralized Knights team.

Marshall -10.5 **

Some more info on Maryland-NcState, looks like both teams will have their starting running back:

Maryland running back Bruce Perry, who has been out of action since with an ankle sprain, returned to practice this week and, according to head coach Ralph Friedgen, Perry is about 90 percent. Friedgen said that he was hopeful that Perry would be able to play. NC State running back T.A. McLendon missed the end of Saturday?s overtime loss to Florida State due to a shoulder injury, but head coach Chuck Amato stated that McLendon would most likely practice at some point this week and should be able to play

ACC

Maryland
Senior starting RB Bruce Perry, who has been out of action since his No. 1 ankle sprain setback, returned to practice this week and, according to head coach Ralph Friedgen, Perry is about 90 percent. Friedgen said that he was hopeful that Perry would be able to play in Saturday?s contest at N.C. State. ? Sophomore starting LB Shawne Merriman, who suffered a concussion during last week?s game, has yet to return to practice. Merriman had an MRI test yesterday and is currently listed as questionable for Saturday?s game.

Big East

Miami, Fla.
Sophomore starting WR Roscoe Parrish, who missed last week?s game against Syracuse due to a sore right knee, returned to the practice field yesterday for the first time in a week. Parrish should be healthy to play in the Canes? home finale against Rutgers on Saturday.

Big Ten

Iowa
Head coach Kirk Ferentz hopes to field a healthy team when the Hawkeyes travel to Wisconsin this Saturday, but, as of Tuesday, there were 15 players out with the flu. The flu bug has bitten the Hawkeyes at almost every position this week, and all the players and coaches have started taking antibiotics as a preventive measure.

Purdue
Head coach Joe Tiller has officially announced that he intends to redshirt backup QB Brandon Kirsch this season. Kirsch, now a sophomore, played a major role as a freshman, but junior starter Kyle Orton has been at the helm for the duration of this season. Tiller?s announcement would allow Kirsch to have two years as the potential starter after Orton?s eligibility expires at the end of 2004. This means that Kyle Smith becomes the No. 2 man, at QB, for this weekend?s game at Indiana.

Wisconsin
A frustrated Anthony Davis indicated that he does not expect to play on Saturday versus Iowa. The junior standout RB is still severely hampered by injuries to both ankles, and has limited his work in practice this week to working out with the scout team. With redshirt freshman Booker Stanley also hindered by an ankle sprain suffered in his start against Michigan State last weekend, the starting chores will fall on the shoulders of sophomore Dwayne Smith, who came off the bench last weekend to rush 21 times for 207 yards and three scores.

Big XII

Colorado
Senior RB Bobby Purify will undergo surgery this Friday to remove a calcium deposit on his foot. Purify has been unable to play since suffering a high ankle sprain in the Sept. 13 contest against Washington State, and head coach Gary Barnett indicated that the calcium deposit has made Purify?s return difficult. Purify is expected to receive a medical redshirt season and could return to the Buffs in 2004.

Kansas
Senior starting QB Bill Whittemore, who has been out of action since suffering a fracture to his right collarbone on Oct. 25, returned to practice on Monday and is hoping to play in Saturday?s season finale against Iowa State. Head coach Mark Mangino stated that Whittemore would start if he is healthy, but the coaching staff continues to prep true freshman Adam Barmann if Whittemore is unable to return.

SEC

Georgia
Junior starting QB David Greene announced that he would return for his senior season, but close friend and teammate David Pollack isn?t quite sure. Pollack indicated that he?d love to return for his senior season, but he wants to make sure he?s making the right decision.

LSU
The Bayou Bengals have reached a two-year deal with Arizona State, which will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The first game will be played at LSU on Sept. 10, 2005, and the second contest will be held in Tempe, Arizona, on Sept. 6, 2008.

Lucky call last night on Marshall they should not of covered. I agree with Joe De that Alabama is getting too many points and I am a Auburn fan so take the Crimson Tide to the bank.

Cobra,

Have to disagree with you that Marshall did not deserve to cover, when a team outgains the other team by a 3 to 1 ratio then I would say they should cover.

Look out Wolverines the buckeyes have God on their side:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio State safety Will Allen says the Buckeyes have won so many close games because they've gotten help from above -- and he doesn't mean the coaches in the press box.

"We work hard each game. We play tough. When we do that, it's hard to beat us," Allen said during preparations this week for the No. 4 Buckeyes' showdown Saturday against No. 5 Michigan. "A lot of games, I'll say God has been on our side. I wouldn't say it's luck or fortune. I wouldn't say it's by mishap or even coincidence -- I think it's planned that way."

Miami, Fla.
Head coach Larry Coker still hasn?t announced a starting QB for Saturday?s home finale against Rutgers, but did state that an announcement would probably be coming tonight or early Friday morning. Juniors Brock Berlin and Derrick Crudup have been rotating with the first-team offense in practice this week.

Pittsburgh
Senior starting RB Brandon Miree, who has missed the last seven games due to a stress fracture in his leg, will get the start in Saturday?s contest at Temple. Earlier in the week, head coach Walt Harris wasn?t sure if Miree was mentally prepared to return to action, but, after watching him practice hard for the past two days, Harris concluded that Miree was fit to play.

Big XII

Kansas
Head coach Mark Mangino announced that senior QB Bill Whittemore would ?definitely be the starter? when the Jayhawks host its home finale against Iowa State. According to Mangino, Whittemore, who has missed the past three games with a collarbone injury, threw the ball well in practice this week and showed no signs of any injury. Mangino added that Whittemore?s fresh legs would add another dimension to the Jayhawks? offense game plan.

Missouri
The Columbia Daily Tribune reported that sophomore starting safety Jason Simpson has been suspended for this weekend?s game at Kansas State. Apparently, Simpson, who is the fourth-leading tackler started nine of ten games this season, was involved in an argument with an assistant coach during the Tigers? contest against Texas A&M last Saturday. Redshirt freshman David Overstreet would most likely fill the starter?s role in Simpson?s absence.

Pac-10

USC
Offensive coordinator Norm Chow stated on Wednesday that he has been contacted by Arizona Athletic Director Jim Livengood, and will meet with him following this weekend?s game to discuss the vacant head coaching job in Tucson. Chow stated that nothing has been offered, and that Arizona is still in the process of deciding on a replacement.

Washington State
Senior starting QB Matt Kegel, who has an injured right shoulder, returned to practice yesterday and stated that the shoulder felt much better than it did during last week?s preparations, but admitted that it may be today (after a day?s workout) before being able to judge the soreness. Kegel, however, insists that he will be on the field for Saturday?s contest at Washington.

SEC

Georgia
Head coach Mark Richt stated that junior starting safety Sean Jones is probable to play in this weekend?s home contest against Kentucky. Jones, who missed last week?s Auburn game against Auburn due to a pinched nerve in his neck/shoulder, stated after yesterday?s practice that this is the healthiest he?s been in the past two months. Jones has been bothered with the neck injury since the Sept. 13 game against South Carolina. ? Sophomore starting OG Bartley Miller, who has been hampered by a sore left shoulder, will miss his second straight game on Saturday, but Richt remains hopeful that Miller could return sometime in the next few weeks.

Ole Miss
Senior starting RB Ronald McClendon, who has been withheld from participating in the Rebels? last two games, will also miss the final two games of the regular season, but there?s still hope that he could return for the postseason. McClendon has been held out as a precautionary measure from a possible rules violation involving the purchase of a sports utility vehicle, which may have been aided by an Ole Miss booster. The school and the NCAA have so far remained mum regarding the issue.

Tennessee
True freshman right tackle Aaron Sears, who started last week?s game in place of injured senior Sean Young, was still in a walking boot yesterday and it appears that the right ankle he injured during last weekend?s contest will keep him out of action for this week?s game, as well. Young (ankle) returned to practice with the second team this week and is expected to play in Saturday?s game against Vanderbilt. Meanwhile, Cody Douglas has worked with the first team at the right tackle spot.

-- Florida Atlantic University Athletic Director Craig Angelos stated that the school would declare its intention to move to Division I-A late next year. The Owls are only three years removed from the start of football program, as a whole, but have posted an 8-2 record this season and are on the verge of the Division I-AA playoffs. The school has until June 30, of next year, to announce the move, and plans to spend the 2004 and 2005 seasons as a conditional DI-A member before gaining full membership in 2006. FAU is currently shooting for a spot in the Sun Belt Conference.

-- Louisville and Miami, Fla reached a two-game home-and-home deal. The Cardinals will travel to Coral Gables next year for an Oct. 9 showdown, whereas the Canes will return the favor and visit Louisville sometime in 2006.

troy state like only in a teaser

uab..i'm leaning toward S.F. in a teaser..too many walking wounded uab

standford ..i like them to cover and in a teaser (6 points)

Utah...should cover easily

Kansas..another one in a teaser only...

Cincy...memphis will win but can't put a figure on this becasue of the running back injuries..to close to call at 10 points ..i don;teven like this in a teaser. could go from one end on the spectrum to the other...no play

Northwestern..like it S/U..but better in a teaser

Wisky...another i like to win S/U,,,but teaser is better

suggestion:

this week anything can happen ..i'm being, again very cautious..and using more teasers at the end on the season...these home dogs are dangerous...except BYU

best i like is Duke and utah in a teaser or northwestern...

all of the above have a 80% of winning or covering...

also like Clemson, pitt, and alabama..

another note: like the lsu/miss under

I like Arkansas in a teaser...becasue Miss state could care less about this game and they will lose. their focus is next week and the whole season revolves around beating Ole Miss...and i forcast Miss state to winoutright....MIss st. don't want to risk injury this week against a a physical team as arkansas.

gl bud....been another winning season
