Michigan State (-3) at Penn State

** The MSU offense was unstoppable last Saturday vs. Wisconsin. The Badgers defense came into the game having given up just eight TD’s all season long. The Spartans scored six TD’s on Saturday alone. MSU ran threw the Badger "D" for 430 yards which is the second highest total Wisky has given up since Alvarez took over. The Spartans 49 points were more than Wisconsin’s first six opponents scored COMBINED. The Spartan offense had TWO 99-yard drives for TD’s. Michigan State’s defense also got into the action holding Wisconsin short of the goal line twice on fourth and inches. It was a game where MSU got the momentum and everything went their way, while Wisconsin was completely deflated after key play after key play went against them. This game was 21-14 with under 30 seconds to go in the half. Wisconsin was attempting to tie the game going into the break with a first and goal from the one yard line. They failed to score which have MSU huge momentum going into half. MSU then recovered an onside kick to start the second half and scored a TD a few plays later. That was the beginning of the end of Wisconsin’s unbeaten season.

** While PSU will be playing their final game of the season, MSU now has some hope. Going into last week’s game vs. Wisconsin, the Spartans only chance to go to a bowl game was to win their final three games vs. Wisconsin, at Penn State and at Hawaii. Not many thought they could clear the first and toughest hurdle vs. the Badgers. Now a 2-0 end to the year will send them somewhere for the holidays. The Spartans though have not won at PSU since the Lions joined the Big Ten. MSU’s last win in Happy Valley was back in 1965 which at the time was a non-conference game.

** MSU QB Drew Stanton, who separated his shoulder vs. Michigan a few weeks back, will start this Saturday at Penn State. Stanton, who was not expected to play last Saturday, was forced into duty in the second half when his backup Damon Dowdell injured his shoulder and couldn’t return. Because MSU was running the ball so effectively, the Spartan coaches were able to protect Stanton by simply having him hand the ball off. He threw just 5 passes. With Stanton at QB, the Spartans have averaged 458 YPG which is tops in the Big Ten. Reports are that he will be around 90% "healthy" this weekend.

Today's top story ... Orton to be fine for Indiana
Senior QB Kyle Orton will get the start for Saturday’s regular-season finale against Indiana; Orton has been slowed of late by injuries to both his hips, but he’s closer to 100 percent this week than he has been for the past month; Sophomore Brandon Kirsch, who has started the past two games, has had a couple injuries of his own (shoulder/thumb), but is expected to be the top backup for Saturday’s game

ACC

Virginia Tech
Senior starting FS Vincent Fuller, who suffered an injury to his right shoulder during the Nov. 6 game against North Carolina, has returned to the practice field and is expected to be in the starting lineup for tomorrow night’s contest versus Maryland …

Big XII

Kansas
Sophomore starting TB John Randle will miss the regular-season finale against Missouri this Saturday after suffering an injury during last week’s loss to Texas; Junior Clark Green will take over as the starting TB for Saturday’s game … Sophomore QB Adam Barmann, who suffered an injury to his shoulder on the last weekend of October, could possibly return as a backup for Saturday’s game; Junior Brian Luke will get the start at QB, as last week’s starter, senior John Nielsen, suffered a high ankle sprain during last weekend’s contest and is doubtful … KU officials have announced that the Jayhawks’ Oct. 15 home game versus Oklahoma next season would be played in Arrowhead Stadium

Nebraska
The Oklahoma student, who was allegedly injured by senior backup OL Darren DeLone during pre-game warm-ups of last weekend’s Oklahoma-Nebraska game, plans to press charges; The student was knocked unconscious and lost two teeth from the incident, in which witnesses described DeLone as being the individual responsible for the student’s injuries

Big Ten

Penn State
Senior starting FS Andrew Guman, who has been sidelined since suffering a chest contusion and partially collapsed lung during the Ohio State game on Oct. 30, has yet to be cleared for contact drills, but has returned to the practice field; Guman hopes to be cleared to play in Saturday’s game versus Michigan State

MAC

Northern Illinois
Sophomore starting TB Garrett Wolfe, who was unable to play during last Tuesday’s loss to Toledo due to an eye injury, has been cleared to play in Saturday’s regular-season finale against Eastern Michigan; Wolfe suffered the injury on Nov. 7 when he was “sucker-punched”, as he tried to break up a fight in a local restaurant-bar

Pac-10

Southern California
Sophomore starting WR Steve Smith, who broke his left leg during the Trojans’ Oct. 9 contest versus Cal, returned to practice this week and is hopeful to play in the Trojans’ Nov. 27 game versus Notre Dame; Smith practiced lightly on Monday, but has been cleared to participate in non-contact drills throughout the week; He is expected to go through full drills next week …

SEC

Alabama
Head coach Mike Shula stated that he expects junior QB Spencer Pennington to play in Saturday’s game versus in-state rival Auburn; Pennington returned to practice, but was limited in his activities; Shula, however, indicated that Pennington’s injured left shoulder and ribs are improving; If Pennington is unable to go, sophomore Marc Guillon would get the start; Guillon has been hampered by a back injury and hasn’t played since

Misc.

-- The Silicon Valley Bowl is close to finalizing a deal to replace the Pac-10 bid with a team from the MAC; The Pac-10 will be unable to fill all seven of its automatic bids, so representatives are looking closely at the MAC, which currently has five teams eligible for bowls, but only has two automatic bids

Played Mich -3.5 late Sunday night bought back some of it today with a OSU play at +6, hoping to middle the game at 4 or 5. Some thoughts on the game:

1. This game is sort of reminding me of the Browns and Steelers game from last week although the line is not dropping. We have a home dog that has controversy swirling with Clarett and the NCAA in Columbus which was the same case for the Browns with the media calling for Butch's head.

2. We have a dog that has not been able to consistently move the ball and the running game has been sporadic which is similar to the Browns.

3, We have a team whose defense has been run ragged by being on the field over 60% of the season and has been forced to defend short fields.

4. We have a team whom does not have the athletes on the interior lines compared to their opponents. While QB and RB positions have been mentioned as the Buckeyes problems the root of the problem is the offensive line.

5. On the defensive side the Buckeyes interior line has not been able to apply pressure all year and teams know this so when the Buckeyes blitz teams check-off and hit the slide receiver coming underneath the spot where the blitz is coming from. Also, the Buckeyes secondary is banged up, WHitmer is done, Sally has a severe stinger and Fox will be at 60% with a groin pull.

6. Looking at this game it would seem the Buckeyes are over-matched in the interior line on both sides of the ball. I can only see them winning outright if Mich hands them the game on turnovers or erratic special teams play.

7. With all that mentioned above I would not be surprised to see OSU make this a game similar to when Krenzel started for the first time against Mich as a dog and won outright. On paper though Mich should win this game by 10 points but as with any rivalry anything can happen.

Some other plays that I am considering:

Geo Tech- Looking at this from a psychological perspective, you would have to assume that UVA is on a huge emotional downer after another big game loss. Tech seems to be peaking at the right time and if they get to a bowl may be a good play there also.

Penn State-someone talk me out of this one, but the line is rising and starting to look temptine. A little concerned about Stanton if he plays.

Mizzou-How will Kansas score? There offense was average at best but now they are down to their 4th team qb

CMU-Not as bad as their record playing a terrible Bal lState team. If Chipps get rolling this could get ugly.

Cinc-One of the hottest teams in the country, offense has exploded for the past month.

Vandy-have to at least look at them with the Vols QB issues, fit the criteria for a defensive dog.

Florida State
Junior starting center David Castillo is not expected to play in Saturday night’s contest against Florida State, according to head coach Bobby Bowden; Castillo, who suffered a dislocated ring finger on his snapping hand during last Thursday night’s game against N.C. State, was able to practice earlier in the week, but was unable to participate in the scrimmage; Senior Brian Ross will get the start if Castillo is unable to play

Miami, Fla.
Senior standout CB Antrel Rolle (turf toe), who missed almost all of last week’s practice sessions and played sparingly in the Canes’ victory over Virginia last weekend, has returned to the practice field and it appears that his status is good for Saturday’s game against Wake Forest; Head coach Larry Coker has not yet named Rolle the starter, but that announcement could come later today or tomorrow

C-USA

East Carolina
Head coach John Thompson will not return for the 2005 season after going 3-18 during his first two seasons at ECU; The University announced that Thompson had resigned, but Thompson stated that he was told that his contract would be terminated at season’s end

Pac-10

Arizona State
The Sun Devils announced schedule changes for its 2005 season; The home opener versus Temple will be on the Thursday before Labor Day (Sept. 1), and its home game versus Washington was moved from Oct. 15 to Oct. 29, which allows for a bye week after six games, which is similar to this year’s scheduling format …

Stanford
Redshirt freshman QB T.C. Ostrander will get his second consecutive start on Saturday versus Cal; Sophomore QB Trent Edwards, who started the first nine games, missed last week’s game due to an injured shoulder and has been limited in practice this week; Although, head coach Buddy Teevens indicated that there’s a possibility that Edwards could see playing time this weekend )

Washington
Junior starting DE Mike Mapuolesega, who suffered an injury to his ankle during last week’s loss to Cal, aggravated the ankle during practice this week and is now listed as doubtful for Saturday’s contest against arch rival Washington State; With junior starting LB Joe Lobendahn already out with a broken wrist he suffered last week, the Huskies’ defensive personnel will be shuffled …

SEC

Florida
The Gators’ LB corps, which has been shuffled the past two games due to various injuries, appears to be at full strength as the team prepares for this weekend’s rivalry game versus Florida State; Sophomore Channing Crowder (foot), senior Travis Harris (ankle), and junior Todd McCullough (ankle) are all expected to play against the Noles … After watching sophomore TB DeShawn Wynn’s progress in practice this week, head coach Ron Zook stated that Wynn (groin injury) may also be back in action on Saturday

Georgia
Senior starting DE Will Thompson, who missed the entire 2003 season due to a dislocated left ankle, indicated that he plans to appeal to the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility

Tennessee
Senior starting center Jason Respert, who missed the Vols’ last game due to an ankle sprain, was admitted to a hospital on Wednesday after developing an infection in his hand; Head coach Phillip Fulmer indicated that he expects Respert to play in Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt, but if not, senior Chuck Prugh would take over as the starter … Fulmer stated that junior starting RG Cody Douglas, who has been hampered by a mid-foot sprain, would not play against Vandy; Junior Richie Gandy will get the nod in Douglas’ absence … Senior punter Dustin Colquitt has been unable to practice this week due to a groin injury, and is questionable for Saturday’s game
