Citing a source, Butch Stearns of WFXT Fox TV in Boston is reporting that Philip Rivers has a partially torn ACL.

The Chargers have been calling Rivers' injury a sprain, or "strain" of his MCL and expect Rivers to be a game-time decision against the Patriots. Stearns says that Rivers hasn't been ruled out of the game, but his side-to-side movements may be restricted. It's worth noting that Stearns isn't exactly considered the most reliable source in the business.

Antonio Gates (toe) sat out Thursday's practice, as expected.

Gates is expected to be a game-day decision against the Patriots.

LaDainian Tomlinson (hyperextended knee) returned to Chargers practice Thursday.

Tomlinson practiced with a black elastic sleeve on his knee and went through a complete workout. He'll play at New England.

I dont know what they are talking about here in Local radio they just had the Charger trainer on the radio and he said Rivers is going to play. LT went thru full practice and Gates is probably out for the game. Norv also said that Rivers will practice tomorrow.

It's a sprained MCL nothing more. You can't run or play with a torn ACL.

Lt went though full practice today.

Not true. Koy Detmer played almost a full season at Colorado with a partially torn ACL.

Dennis Dixon tried to do the same vs Arizona this year and he ended up tearing it all the way through.

I have a torn ACL in each knee. One is repaired, the other isn't. Although you can still function with a torn ACL, there is no way you could play a football game one week after doing it. It would still be swollen and very unstable.

That is FALSE.

He practiced today and said he felt good and had no "Set-Backs"

He also said he feels confident for Sunday.

Thanks for the update! Just posting what I found from another good source. Didn't realize you were at practice today.

Chargers' Rivers will need second surgery on ailing knee

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

SAN DIEGO -- Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said Monday that he had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee a week ago in order to play in the AFC Championship Game, and that he'll need surgery on the torn anterior cruciate ligament in the same joint.

Rivers made it through Sunday's 21-12 loss to the perfect New England Patriots despite the damage to his knee, which he sustained in an upset win over the Indianapolis Colts a week earlier.

Rivers said he'd like to have surgery as soon as possible on the torn ACL.

"It's gone," he said. "I don't know exactly the details on that. I'll be ready by training camp."

Rivers said he had arthroscopic surgery a week earlier to clean out damaged cartilage.

"It wasn't real extensive, but I mean, really that was the only way I would have had a chance to play by doing that on Monday," he said. "I thought maybe I could come back in the Colts game but it was catching. That's what we did on Monday to give me the chance to play on Sunday."
