First of all, kudos to Tampa backers. Right side of that one. Good defensive squads get so little credit compared to good offensive squads. Time and time again.

Anyway, check this out -- from the Baltimore Sun today. I haven't heard anything about this, just hints and whatnot. But this guy says a reporter saw robbins actually in Tijuana.

SAN DIEGO -- Oakland Raiders All-Pro center Barret Robbins was sent home by the team before yesterday's Super Bowl for unspecified violations.

A Raiders spokesman declined to comment on why Robbins was disciplined, but various Web sites reported that he missed Saturday's walk-through practice and showed up late for the team's final meeting Saturday night.

A Sun reporter saw Robbins leaving Tijuana, Mexico, on Saturday when team events were occurring. (bold face added by me.)

"It was no distraction because I eliminated it," Raiders coach Bill Callahan said. "He was essentially dismissed. He missed some responsibilities and obligations. I made a decision to dismiss him for that."

Adam Treu started in Robbins' place. The six-year veteran had not started this season, but he did start the final 14 games last season when Robbins suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Robbins was nicknamed "The Jerk" by his teammates for his surly disposition. But he was an integral part in making the line calls during games.

Although the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sacked quarterback Rich Gannon five times last night, most of the pressure came off the edges rather than up the middle against Treu.

"It didn't help our cause," Gannon said. "But I don't know if he would have made any difference."

The Associated Press and other news organizations reported that Robbins was hospitalized yesterday. Two sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Robbins was expected to spend the night in a hospital after he left the team for nearly 24 hours during the weekend.

Robbins, who had what the team called a "chemical imbalance" during the 1996 season, was hospitalized in the San Diego area, the sources close to Robbins said.

Don't eat the Brown Acid....

Don't eat the Brown Acid....

Wierd article on a wierd situation. Shades of E. Robinson from the Falcons.

O.K....let me get this straight.
It seems that Robbins did something (missed curfew, showed up drunk to a film sessions...?) and was dismissed form the team. He then went to Mexico and Partied his Ass off in retalition. While in Mexico he got a hold of some bad drugs ( or maybe just drank the water) and became ill to the extent that his wife said "He just wasn't himself" and was checked into a hospital.

Is it me or does it seem that there are missing parts to this story?

The real question is:
Will he still be in the ProBowl?

Eugene Robinson wasn't using drugs that night at least as far as I know, just propositioning a prostitute/policewoman the night before the biggest game of his life. No,the Bengals Stanley Wilson is the only ballplayer thats done anything comparable to this.As a matter of fact,it remains to be seen if Robbins belongs in the same league with Wilson, who was so powerless in the face of Peruvian Marching Powder that he went on a cocaine bender the night before the Bowl and didn't turn up for several days after the game as I recollect. Was suspended and missed the game for sure.Sad strange stories.

The story as we hear it out here in SD as of noon today is this:

he missed curfew Fri night
missed team meetings Sat afternoon and early evening
and was suspended Sat night when he finally arrived.
Treu was told that he was starting mid day Sat
Conflicting reports have Robbins going home on Sunday or hospitalized for unknown reasons at a local hospital. However no hospital has a Barret Robbins listed as a patient.

Rumors have it from various Raider players that Robbins was in TJ all night Friday. Other reports have this guy as being a manic depressant which is why he was hospitalized after being kicked off the team (strange behavior...according to the wife)
I know for a fact that he (and his other o-lineman) were out in Pacific Beach drinking Monday night (no big deal about that however).

Obviously the true story is not being revealed but it's clear to me that drinking/drugs/women HAD to be invloved. What, was he touring the Baja coast in Mexico eating Lobster and just lost track of time......for 24 hours?
