here and there....
The Rockies send German Marquez to the hill tonight, and Marquez got a taste of big league action with six appearances (three starts) in 2016. His overall numbers weren?t terrible, but he allowed a .391 wOBA to LHBs and a .397 wOBA to RHBs. He also allowed tons of hard contact to righties. However, we are dealing with a very small sample size there. Marquez has some promise down the road, but the reality is that he is a 22 year old pitcher facing a very good offense in Coors Field. The Nationals have an implied team total of 5.6 runs this evening.
White Sox (Dylan Covey)
Prior to this season, Dylan Covey had not made an appearance above AA ball. He was a Rule 5 pick from Oakland after last season, so the White Sox have to keep Covey on their major league roster all year. Covey was a highly touted prospect and was drafted right behind former White Sox ace Chris Sale in the 2010 draft before medical issues sent him into a spiral. There is really nothing that indicates he should be on a major league roster right now. In 26 starts at High A ball in 2015, he struck out just six batters per nine innings. He made just six starts in AA a year ago, and now he?s in the major leagues. His first two starts have been awful, and he has just two strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings.
Twins (Ervin Santana)
Do not be fooled by Ervin Santana and his 0.64 ERA. He is currently allowing a .114 BABIP (!!!!) through four starts. His SIERA is in line with his career average (4.15 this year compared to 4.13 career). His xFIP is in line with his career average (4.13 this year compared to 4.18 career). The regression monster is going to bite at some point, and it?s going to hurt.... he?s a fly ball prone pitcher who has to pitch in Texas tonight.
Giants (Tyson Blach)
This is likely a bullpen game for the Giants. Blach has pitched just 5 2/3 innings over seven relief appearances this year.
Pirates (Gerrit Cole)
He?s not overpowering hitters, as he had just a 19.4% strikeout rate last year and has a 19.0% rate so far this year. His hard contact rate has spiked every year since his rookie season (24% in 2013, 28.9% in 2014, 29.5% in 2015, and 30.1% last year). It currently sits at 37.3% in 2017. He?s not the ace that a lot of people expected him to be when he first came into the major leagues.
