) ? It's one version of the American dream: free McDonald's for life.

For Mitt Romney's father, the dream was reality - the one-time Michigan governor was granted free meals at the fast food chair by its founder.

Speaking at a fund-raising event in Chicago, the presumptive GOP nominee relayed a story about finding a special coupon in his dad's drawer.

"I found a little paper card, a little pink card, and it said, 'This entitles George W. Romney to a lifetime of a hamburger, a shake and French fries at McDonald's.' It was signed by the hand of Ray Kroc. My dad had done a little training lesson or whatever for McDonald's when there was just a handful of restaurants and I saw this thing and was like, this is a gold mine, dad! What are you doing?"

Romney said he laminated the card for his father, who he said went "almost every day" to McDonald's for either a hamburger or a fish sandwich.

"He would present this little card and of course the person behind the counter would look and say, 'Well, what is that?' They'd never seen something like that, but he said it was never turned down. They always honored it," Romney said.

Paul Ryan's campaign walked back comments the VP nominee made about running a marathon.

"I had a two hour and fifty-something" marathon, Ryan said last week an interview. "I hurt a disc in my back, so I don?t run marathons anymore."

But the Ryan campaign confirmed to Runner's World that he has only run one marathon, the 1990 Grandma?s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, which he finished in just over 4 hours.

The admission comes after wide speculation that Ryan had exaggerated his marathon time. Running a sub-3 hour marathon means averaging under 7 minutes per mile for the entire race, a possible but extremely impressive feat. As the New Yorker's Nicholas Thompson put it, "It?s the difference between racing and running."

This isn't the first time Ryan has come under fire this week for stretching the truth. His RNC speech was chastised for misleading claims about Medicare and the 2008 closing of a Wisconsin plant.

The running fib "sounds trivial," wrote the New York Times' Paul Krugman. "But I remember the 2000 campaign, when Al Gore was constantly hounded by claims of fibbing on trivial issues ? claims that, by the way, were all, as far as I could tell, fabricated. These alleged fibs supposedly showed some deep defect in his character. So if Ryan is making false claims about his physical prowess, this is absolutely fair game."

A different situation? Yes indeed,Mitt would have gunned down the Muslims protesting the video, the ambassador would still be dead and we would be at war with three more countries with more wars on the way. And our standing in the world? Just like Mitt's standing in the pantheon of foreign policy: Williard is A Clueless Bully.
...............................................................

Um, the last time we had a Repubican President, jet planes attacked the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon, killing 2,977 innocent people. Nobody at the time -- certainly not the same day -- suggested that the deaths occurred because the President had allowed disrespect for America to fester.

Of course, later on, when mourning had taken place, questions were raised, in a civil manner, about the level of attention and preparedness on the part of the Administration.

Now, four Americans have been killed, not in the US, but in an area of the world that has been destabilized by the overthrow of dictators. The dictator in Libya had kind of become a friend of the US, and we helped him out by delivering some of his enemies to his prisons. Some Libyans are not happy with us.

Mitt Romney doesn't wait for some decent interval to pass; doesn't even wait till has all or most of the facts. He reacted quickly, not because a quick reaction was important in addressing the problem, but because he sensed a political opportunity. I don't recall a similarly opportunistic reaction to any previous attack in my lifetime.

Republicans made a bad choice, but we are getting used to that. Their bench is Sarah-Palin deep. They haven't offered a credible leader since Dwight Eisenhower. Just go away, Mitt.
