Republican presidential candidate Mitt Wrongney makes speaks at a fundraiser at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California September 22, 2012

After a rocky week that saw plenty of conservatives break away from Mitt Romney, New York Times columnist David Brooks summed up the state of affairs on Sunday.

As NBC's "Meet The Press" roundtable dove into some data surrounding Romney's popularity.

"Look at his high unfavorable ratings," host David Gregory said. "At 50%. The highest of any candidate running in recent memory. This is an image problem that his philosophical statements in this speech in May to fundraisers only exacerbates."

Brooks did not mince words, calling Romney "the least popular candidate in history."

"He has to look at what the president's weakness is," Brooks said. "He's never gonna win a popularity contest. As you said, he's the least popular candidate in history."

Brooks added that Romney "does not have the passion for the stuff he?s talking about."

"He?s a problem solver," Brooks said. "I think he?s a non-ideological person running in an extremely ideological age, and he?s faking it."

Polls have brought grim results surrounding Romney's favorability, with a late August ABC News/Washington Post survey drawing a 35 percent likability rating.

Romney's 47 percent comments added fuel to that fire. After his comments were leaked on Monday, Brooks conceded that he sees the GOP presidential hopeful as a "kind, decent man" running a "depressingly inept presidential campaign."

Clint Eastwood's Movie Bombs

Well, Americans are just using their liberties of free speech and what we do and do not want to watch. This is America's in-house cinematic reply titled "Revenge Of The Empty Chairs!"

Hey, really, he shouldn't have a problem with that. What a tribute to him, all those theaters full of empty chairs watching his film in dead silence.

If it's good enough for Clint, it's good enough for Americans to do likewise. We're just simply Eastwooding Eastwood.
.................................................................

why does Clint Eastwood have to be a 82 yr old Dirty Harry in all his movies over the past 10 yrs

it is not very memorable for him to do out like that

I really don't care that Mr. Romney pays a lower rate on his millions of income than I pay on my Social Security benefits. I really don't care that he pays a lower rate on his millions of income than many middle income taxpayers pay on theirs. I do care that he won't release his tax returns for previous years - the ones that actually means something. I do care that his actions (not his words, his actions) say "I don't have to play by the same rules everyone else does." That does bother me. A lot.

After his wife's plane was forced to make an emergency landing this weekend, Romney told the Los Angeles Times, he was worried for her safety. The candidate then continued on a bizarre tangent that showed just how little the Republican nominee understands about flight.

?I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don?t think she knows just how worried some of us were,? Romney told the paper. ?When you have a fire in an aircraft, there?s no place to go, exactly."

Romney said the biggest problem in a distressed aircraft is that "the windows don?t open. I don?t know why they don?t do that. It?s a real problem. So it?s very dangerous.":142smilie

The main reason airplane windows don't open is because there isn't enough oxygen at cruising altitude to keep passengers alive. (The fear of window or cabin failures, which would lead to potentially fatal hypoxia, is why many planes are equipped with emergency oxygen masks.)

"You can?t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don?t open," Romney told the Times, suggesting that additional oxygen in the cabin during the electrical malfunction could've alleviated the problem. In fact, if there were an electrical fire on board, additional oxygen would have fed the flames.

Yet it seems that the Kremlin's support for U.S. hawks is shifting. In March, Medvedev took issue with U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney's characterization of Russia as the "No. 1 geopolitical foe." He said the view "smelled of Hollywood stereotypes" and suggested that it was rooted in the Cold War.

But it wasn't only Medvedev and his pro-Western supporters who became critical of the Republican's views. Although President Vladimir Putin recently thanked Romney for his openness regarding the "No.1 foe" comment, he also indicated that it would be hard for the Kremlin to work with Romney as president, especially on sensitive security issues such as the missile defense system. During Putin's interview with RT state television, he also called Obama an "honest man who really wants to change much for the better." This comment was widely viewed as Putin's most direct endorsement of Obama in the presidential race.

The change in Russia's perception can be explained by the sobering effects of the global financial crisis and progress that Russia and the United States have made since 2009. The crisis ended Russia's era of 7 percent average annual growth from 1999 to 2008. Russia, which is overly dependent on energy exports, was hit particularly hard by the 2008 crisis. Its gross domestic product fell about 8.5 percent in 2009, while China and India continued to grow, albeit at a slower pace.

It took Russia's leadership some time to adjust its foreign policy to the new global conditions. Obama's decision to improve relations with the country and establish strong ties with Medvedev despite Russia's war with Georgia in August 2008 was essential. The diplomacy of pressing the "reset" button with Russia proved important for alleviating the Kremlin's fear of NATO expansion and the region's destabilization in response to Washington's strategy of regime change in several countries.

Since 2009, the two sides have cooperated by signing and then ratifying the new START treaty, imposing tougher sanctions on Iran and working to stabilize Afghanistan. Not only did the Kremlin provide overflights and overland transportation, but it also recently approved NATO's use of the Ulyanovsk airport as a transit point for soldiers and cargo to and from Afghanistan. Russia also renewed a strong interest in developing economic relations with the United States and completed negotiations over its membership in the World Trade Organization.

The progress in U.S.-Russian relations since 2009 does not mean that Russians are entirely satisfied with their relations with the U.S. Russia remains critical of the U.S. proposal to develop the missile defense system jointly with the Europeans without Russia's participation. At the end of 2010, Moscow had to swallow its pride by shelving Medvedev's proposal to create a pan-European security treaty after getting an ice-cold reaction from the U.S. and NATO. Furthermore, NATO remains supportive of Georgia's eventual membership in the alliance, a particularly sore point in U.S.-Russian relations. Finally, the Kremlin's stubborn support of Syria in the United Nations Security Council remains an irritant for Obama and even more so for Romney.

Despite all the Kremlin's frustrations, it remains hopeful that Obama will be re-elected and that he will help to move U.S.-Russian relations forward. The stronger dialogue and engagement that may result from an Obama presidency is an opportunity to weaken nationalist phobias in both Russia and the U.S. This opportunity must be seized.

The conventional wisdom on Obama?s recent surge is that it?s due largely to Mitt Romney?s 47% disaster, and there?s clearly something to this. If nothing else, it?s given Team Obama grist for an absolutely devastating ad.

But it?s worth pointing out another dynamic that?s been overlooked here: The escalating disaster that is Paul Ryan. At the time of his selection, a number of pundits argued Ryan?s strategic benefits, suggesting he would boost Romney by energizing conservatives, or by allowing Romney to run as the candidate of big ideas, or that he would at least be the party?s best defender of the Medicare plan Romney was going to have to defend whether he wanted to or not. This seemed like a stretch at the time?after all, Ryan?s Medicare plan proved to be a massive liability the one time voters weighed in on it. But who could say for sure?

Well, fast forward a month-and-a-half and the numbers look pretty persuasive. This week the New York Times released a set of polls, conducted by Quinnipiac, assessing the state of the race in Ohio and Florida. The top-line numbers were jaw-dropping enough: Obama?s lead in Ohio grew from six to ten over the last month, and from three to nine in Florida. (It?s better to focus on the change here than the magnitude, which is highly sensitive to polling methodology.) But once you look at the internal numbers, they?re even less kind to Romney. More to the point, they suggest Ryan has done enormous damage to the ticket.

Back in late August, Obama led Romney on the question of who would handle Medicare better by 8 points in Florida and 10 points in Ohio; now he?s up 15 in Florida and 16 in Ohio. And the problems are especially acute among senior citizens, a group Obama has traditionally struggled with. A month ago, Obama was down 13 points in Florida among people 65 and older; today he?s up 4. On the specific question of Medicare, Obama was down 4 points among Florida seniors in August; today he?s up 5 points. (The Quinnipiac Poll re-shuffled its age-groups between August and September, so you won?t be make apples-to-apples comparisons by eyeballing their crosstabs. But the super-kind people at Quinnipiac re-reshuffled them for me.)

The numbers for Ohio are similar: In August, Obama was down 8 among seniors in the state; today he?s up 1. A month ago Obama was down 6 points among Ohio seniors on the Medicare issue; today he?s up 6. The turnaround here is simply breathtaking.

Nor is the Times/Quinnipiac poll an outlier. Though I haven?t looked at the internal numbers, a set of Washington Post/Kaiser Family Foundation state polls out today shows something similar: Obama up 19 over Romney on Medicare in Ohio, 15 in Florida, 13 in Virginia, and 17 nationally (his largest lead on the question all year). As the Post write-up puts it: ?[T]he more voters focus on Medicare, the more likely they are to support the president?s bid for reelection.?

Scott, the Liberals are running FAKE POLLS.

Nuff Said

"So there's a number of things going on with the polls, folks," Rush Limbaugh said Thursday on his radio program. "Let's review just quickly some things said yesterday. One of the reasons that you tout a big lead, at the same time early voting begins, is to suppress Romney early voters. Who wants to vote for a loser? Oh, gosh, here we go again. We really don't have a chance. They know that so many people on our side, all you gotta do is listen to the average conservative pundit and realize that they're mired in negativity and pessimism. So you build it up, put out a poll that shows a massive Obama lead and early voting goes on, and so you stoke Obama voters, you depress Romney voters."

A question you might ask yourself: Would Limbaugh be attacking these media polls if the results showed Romney leading?

Republican strategist Karl Rove stoked the same conspiracy flames earlier this week on Fox News.

"You've got to be careful about these polls," Rove said. "We endow them with a false scientific precision they simply don't have."

Ross Perot, the billionaire who shook up the 1992 presidential campaign, has largely remained silent since his emergence on the nation?s political stage nearly two decades ago and as he emerges from the shadows (in part to drum up interest in his forthcoming autobiography), he?s remaining silent about one more thing: the current top candidates running for office.

Pressed by USA Today?s Richard Wolf to endorse a candidate, Perot declined, despite the fact that ?members of his family have donated almost exclusively to Republicans in recent years.?

Perot is an equal-opportunity critic, unimpressed with both President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney when it comes to addressing the nation?s red ink.

?We?re on the edge of the cliff, and we have got to start fixing it now. Otherwise, we?re leaving a disaster to our children?s and our grandchildren?s future,? he said.

Wolf spoke with Perot as part of an interview for C-SPAN, where additional clips have been posted (the full interview is set to air Monday night).

In it, Perot talks about his fear of the United States being taken over.

?If we are that weak, just think of who wants to come here first and take us over, and the last thing I ever want to see is to see this country, our country taken over because we?re so financially weak we can?t do anything and we?re moving in that direct. ? We could even lose our country if we don?t get this fixed and straightened out and nobody that?s running really talks about it, about what we have to do and why we have to do it. They would prefer not to have it discussed.

Perot chimed in on some other topics, including:

The prosperous Clinton years: ?We were just lucky, going through a period where we had the money flowing. ? It was just good luck that made it happened. Right now we?re going through a period of bad luck.?:SIB

The tea party: ?It?s had an interesting impact. ? It?s not the solution, but I think it was a healthy thing to happen. ? It wakes up everybody running for office.?

Perot says his three wishes for the country would be to have a ?strong, moral ethical base,? a ?strong family unit in every home? and a better public school system
.................................................................

It was just good luck that made it happened. Right now we?re going through a period of bad luck.?

I voted for him that year and was proud to do so.

A cameraman who accompanied Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to New York for the U.N. General Assembly has applied for asylum in the United States, and "he's afraid to return to Iran," his attorney said Monday.

New York City-based lawyer Paul O'Dwyer, who said he is working with U.S. authorities on behalf of Hassan Golkanbhan, said his client is afraid of persecution because of his perceived political beliefs.

"He's perceived as not being a supporter, or being an opponent of the Iranian regime," O'Dwyer said. "Somebody who has betrayed the regime and who can no longer be trusted by them."

O'Dwyer said while the cameraman didn't have any suspicion cast on him before his trip to New York, "there were things that he was expected to do that he was uncomfortable with doing," and "while he was here... his position on certain things became known to the Iranian government."

When Golkanbhan's part of the Iranian delegation returned home last Thursday after Ahmadinejad's addressed the General Assembly on Wednesday, the cameraman stayed behind, O'Dwyer said.

Since then, O'Dwyer has filed an asylum application on Golkanbhan's behalf. The attorney says that filing provides his client immediate protection from deportation.

O'Dwyer called it a "very, very major decision," with implications for Golkanbhan's wife and two children, who have fled Iran for a haven he won't disclose for their safety.

"The Iranian govt has a fairly long reach, and you know, we're concerned about what may happen to them if they're identified by the government."

Golkanbhan is now waiting for an interview with U.S. authorities, which O'Dwyer says could happen soon -- or months from now.

Calls to the Iranian mission at the United Nations have not been returned, and the whereabouts of Golkanbhan are not clear.
