Ron Jeremy, the male pornography legend that claims to have had sex with about as many women as Kiss? Gene Simmons (between four and five thousand), was at York?s Underground two weeks ago, where an enthusiastic crowd of students welcomed him.
He opened the event with a 10-minute comedy routine, followed by some discussion and a question and answer period with the audience.
Not afraid to self-deprecate, Jeremy opened with the statement, ?I?m living proof that any man can get laid.?
His jokes were funny, but not hilarious. What made people laugh seemed as much to do with his stature and comedic appearance as anything else. Jeremy is like a living breathing cartoon character. You can?t help but laugh at the things he says. Even his nickname, ?The Hedgehog?, is cartoonish in nature. ?I?m called the hedgehog because I have kind of a hairy back,? he explains.
Jokes aside, Jeremy understands the industry as well as anyone and that?s part of the reason why he has been able to sustain such a long career in pornography. In an industry where women command a salary often 10 times higher than their male counterparts, it takes more than just luck for a man to stick around for so long.
One of the misconceptions that guys have entering the industry is ?That it?s all gonna be so easy. I?m going to get to work with Jenna Jameson and have a great time. You work with a girl that isn?t always breathtaking, but they?re always pretty. You?re also gonna often be in scenes that are difficult; on a slab, on a concrete floor ? Outdoors on dirt, hay, blankets on floors. It?s not always as easy as guys think.
That?s a big misconception. They just think it?s me ****ing a gorgeous girl. They don?t realize that there is a whole crew behind that gorgeous girl.?
Jeremy also does not endorse young men using Viagra because he feels they get addicted to such drugs and can become reliant on them for the rest of their sexual lives, and by their thirties, will no longer be able to perform without them.
Women, he says, tend to be smarter entering the business. For them it is a career move and they tend to know exactly what they are getting themselves into. In reference to the detractors of the porn industry, Jeremy attempts to clarify a few things.
?They think we?re a bunch of dirty old men combing through high schools trying to find a girl to make movies. People still think that.
?Psst, hey you wanna be in a porno?? Fact is, every time I cast a film, there are hundreds of girls who wanted to be in it. That?s why so many girls work at the Bunny Ranch, because there?s not enough work for them in porn. Hungary, [the Czech Republic], France, Germany, England, Russia, Poland. The competition is ferocious. So for a girl, it?s not how people think, where you have to talk a girl into porn. You could talk a girl out of it and there are hundreds more [to replace her].?
Ken MacLeod, events coordinator for the York University Student Centre, explains that the size of Jeremy?s reputation wasn?t the only reason he was chosen to speak.
?First of all we did some surveys through the staff and certain members that we deal with and there was a call for more diverse programming.?
As fun as the show went, things didn?t get heated up until after the event. At least a hundred people lined up to get autographs, have their pictures taken with Jeremy or purchase a souvenir. Several young women asked to have Jeremy sign their chest, and naturally he obliged.
A rumour quickly swirled about a young male and his girlfriend making a proposition to Jeremy after the show. This much is true: during the question and answer period, Jeremy responded to a request to see his manhood by explaining that he only does so in private and only on the condition that the girl shows her breasts first. Fair is fair.
As another student journalist and I proceeded to the third floor of the Student Centre along with Jeremy and his entourage, the couple followed. Jeremy and the young woman entered a small empty boardroom adjacent to the one where our interview was to be held, to perform the assumed transaction. Her boyfriend waited outside. When the two emerged from the room four or five minutes later, the young woman seemed to be at a loss for words, to say the least.
