Rove Said to Testify in CIA Leak Case
Oct 06 3:21 PM US/Eastern

By JOHN SOLOMON
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON

Federal prosecutors have accepted an offer from presidential adviser Karl Rove to give 11th hour testimony in the case of a CIA officer's leaked identity but have warned they cannot guarantee he won't be indicted, according to people directly familiar with the investigation.

The persons, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because of grand jury secrecy, said Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has not made any decision yet on whether to file criminal charges against the longtime confidant of President Bush or others.

The U.S. attorney's manual requires prosecutors not to bring witnesses before a grand jury if there is a possibility of future criminal charges unless they are notified in advance that their grand jury testimony can be used against them in a later indictment.

Rove has already made at least three grand jury appearances and his return at this late stage in the investigation is unusual.

The prosecutor did not give Rove similar warnings before his earlier grand jury appearances
.

Rove offered in July to return to the grand jury for additional testimony and Fitzgerald accepted that offer Friday after taking grand jury testimony from the formerly jailed New York Times reporter Judith Miller.

Before accepting the offer, Fitzgerald sent correspondence to Rove's legal team making clear that there was no guarantee he wouldn't be indicted at a later point as required by the rules.

Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin, said Thursday he would not comment on any ongoing discussion he has had with Fitzgerald's office but that he has been assured no decisions on charges have been made. Rove would first have to receive what is known as a target letter if he is about to be indicted.

"I can say categorically that Karl has not received a target letter from the special counsel. The special counsel has confirmed that he has not made any charging decisions in respect to Karl," Luskin said.

He said that Rove "continues to be cooperative voluntarily" with the special counsel investigation and "beyond that, any communication I have or may have in the future are going to be treated as completely confidential."

I wouldn't be too worried on speculation--you better be more concerned with the proven facts---
Berger's Bad News

More bad news for former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger (search), who was caught last year sneaking documents out of the National Archives building by stuffing them in his pants. The Clinton official was in court again yesterday, this time on reckless driving charges after being picked up doing 88 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Berger had begun his probation for document theft just two days before the reckless driving incident and appeared before the same federal magistrate who sentenced him in that case. Judge Deborah Robinson admonished Berger for the offense, saying further punishment may be necessary.

and when this hits 60 minutes you really got probs :)

FBI FREEH UNLOADS ON CLINTON: 'CLOSETS WERE FULL OF SKELETONS'
Thu Oct 06 2005 14:07:50 ET

Louis Freeh Speaks for the First Time About his Terrible Relationship with the President

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh says publicly for the first time that his relationship with President Bill Clinton ? the man who appointed him ? was a terrible one because Clinton?s scandals made him a constant target of FBI investigations. Freeh discloses this and many other details of his dealings with the Clinton White House in a new bombshell book: 'My FBI : Bringing Down the Mafia, Investigating Bill Clinton, and Fighting the War on Terror' -- set for release next week.

Freeh has taped an interview with Mike Wallace and CBSNEWS '60 MINUTES' to be broadcast Sunday, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

MORE

In the book, ?My FBI,? he writes, ?The problem was with Bill Clinton -- the scandals and the rumored scandals, the incubating ones and the dying ones never ended. Whatever moral compass the president was consulting was leading him in the wrong direction. His closets were full of skeletons just waiting to burst out.?

The director sought to distance himself from Clinton because of Whitewater, refusing a White House pass that would have enabled him to enter the building without signing in. This irked Clinton. ?I wanted all my visits to be official,? says Freeh. ?When I sent the pass back with a note, I had no idea it would antagonize the president,? he tells Wallace.

Returning the pass was only the start of the rift. Later, relations got so bad that President Clinton reportedly began referring to Freeh as ?that F?ing Freeh.? Says Freeh, ?I don?t know how they referred to me and I really didn?t care,? he says. ?My role and my obligation was to conduct criminal investigations. He, unfortunately for the country and unfortunately for him, happened to be the subject of that investigation,? Freeh says.

In another revelation, Freeh says the former president let down the American people and the families of victims of the Khobar Towers terror attack in Saudi Arabia. After promising to bring to justice those responsible for the bombing that killed 19 and injured hundreds, Freeh says Clinton refused to personally ask Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah to allow the FBI to question bombing suspects the kingdom had in custody ? the only way the bureau could secure the interviews, according to Freeh. Freeh writes in the book, ?Bill Clinton raised the subject only to tell the crown prince that he understood the Saudis? reluctance to cooperate and then he hit Abdullah up for a contribution to the Clinton Presidential Library.? Says Freeh, ?That?s a fact that I am reporting.?

The most unsavory of those investigations was the one concerning Clinton and Lewinsky. The White House intern had kept a semen-stained dress as proof of her relationship and a Clinton blood sample was needed to match the DNA on the dress. ?Well, it was like a bad movie and it was ridiculous that?Ken Starr and myself, the director of the FBI, find ourselves in that ridiculous position,? he tells Wallace. ?But we did it?very carefully, very confidentially,? recalls Freeh. As he explains the plan in the book, Clinton was at a scheduled dinner and excused himself to go to the bathroom. Instead of the restroom, he entered another room where FBI medical technicians were waiting to take a blood sample.

Freeh says he was determined to stay on as FBI director until President Clinton left office so that Clinton could not appoint his successor. ?I was concerned about who he would put in there as FBI director because he had expressed antipathy for the FBI, for the director,? he tells Wallace. ?[So] I was going to stay there and make sure he couldn?t replace me,? Freeh tells Wallace.

Clem, we need to face facts here. Everyone knows that it's Clinton's fault that nearly every member of the current administration is either being - or about to be - brought up on charges for some sort of corruption.

Yeah, you're right, DTB, no reason to worry about our administration being corrupt and eternally lying and covering it up. I can't think of any better way to show the world why we should be supported and trusted moving forward.

I think it's wrong to do bad things, no matter what party. I think it was wrong for Clinton to lie about Monica. Personally, I don't give much of a crap about that as far as leading the country, but trying to explain that to my kids is where I gained perspective on supporting him - which I stopped doing. I don't think it's ok for Berger to steal documents. People should pay the price for doing illegal things. If there were other things that Clinton did illegally, and I would guess there were, then they should be examined and he should face the music.

Heck, he gets blamed for everything this administration does wrong anyway, so how could anything HE did be any worse than THAT?!?

I was talking about this on here after it happened.. You guys ran from that issue then and you run from it now.

all you can do is say well Clinton did this. You are a joke.

Ok, I can wait until all of this comes to fruition. That's fine. Was I defending Clinton? No. I said for whatever he did wrong, he should face the music, and I also said I stopped defending him on that issue. Typical...it's never enough, is it?

Now, you certainly don't have to consider my points if you don't want to. You can continue to deflect from current situations and bring up old ones, that's fine. Should I start bringing up Iran-Contra? Watergate? Shall I Google all Republican presidents and see what turns up? I don't feel the need to, because I am not comparing this administration to others in this instance. I am suggesting to look at it directly and deal with what it is.

You want to wait? Fine, that's cool. You want to play around with the words lie, liar, lying, etc, and say that Bush has not done it, nor has it been proven? Semantics. Deflections. That's fine. I can wait until the members of this administration, their supporters, and lobbyists are prosecuted and deal with their legal issues as they come up. Hopefully, Jack will have enough server space.

"the bunker"
c`mon,guys...it`s all partisan politics....

it`s so clear,it`s frightening....i`m talking clinton/lewinski and all this rove/delay crap....

the delay indictment was a joke....things are coming out now about the d.a.`s bullying tactics with the grand jury....

it`s amazing that the 2 men seen as 2 of the main architect`s of conservative political agenda, have been targeted by partisan(at least in delay`s case)investigations...

the only difference with the berger faux pas` and the delay/rove stuff is the media coverage...

berger`s mess was basically a non-story....the rove/delay witch hunt`s are like abu gharaib.....

front page news for months..

and as far as the bush lied stuff, grow up....

every western intelligence agancy in the world believed that saddam had some nuclear weapons programs...certainly it was proven that he had bio and chemical weapons stockpiles....

the delay in acting......thanks to the partisan and corrupt u.n.....and collusion with european countries with economic interests in keeping saddam in power... enabled saddam the time to hide or dispose of his stockpiles....

i always found it interesting that the chemical stockpiles...that were a proven fact(just ask the kurds),were never disposed of in plain view of the u.n. inspectors....

they weren`t found....he had them...how stupid of them to destroy them and not get credit from the world community....

was saddam and his henchmen that stupid?...bastards maybe...not stupid...

where`d they go?.....

It is not a witch hunt.. it happened, it's treason. People have been talking about it for 2plus years. This is not the media making things up.

as i said in my panel,counselor...it`s all politically motivated...and much of it is a result of clinton /lewinsky....

yes...republicans contributed mightily to the pathetic political climate that exists today....

you reap what you sow....

clem....treason?....are you serious...have you read up on this case...how the information was allegedly imparted...as a sidenote in a conversation about a totally different subject....he didn`t seek out the reporter...the reporter broached the issue....goes on everyday in washington....

only now,the partisan sharks lurk behind every corner....

unlike sandy berge deliberately stuffing official documents from the national archives in his underwear....lol

and barely gets a notice from the national media..if it had been a reublican honcho, there would have been hearings...

btw...sandy`s in the news again...he`s a real beauty...

Somehow and someway Clinton is at fault for the act of treason by Rove, don't you know if old Bubba had did a better job in the White House none of this would of had to happen. If Rove is guilty his ass deserves to be either exiled to another country or else he needs prison time since he is a traitor and can no longer be trusted.

Would be good idea--could prove educational--When you can provide "factual evidence" of one more corrupt and deceitful than last administration -report back to us.

Treason???? "Ironclad Proof" of liberals getting their picture taken on guns of enemy while smiling and give them their support and thats ok--but let someone get "accused" of mentioning name of someone working at desk job and you want exile and jail time.Liberal Logic at its finest.

First of all, she was a field agent and the desk job is typical spin from the right! Comparing Jane Fonda to Rove is a steretch by anyones means but IMO I think what she did to be repulsive and sickening, but what Rove did out of political spite is even more sickening and the guy deserves the punishment that fits the crime if he is guilty. I know damn well that if the shoe was on the other foot and someone in Clinton's Administration had done the same thing out of spite, you would be howling for punishment.

Unforunately MC politicans cover for each other regardless of party--even if they find him quilty which I think is very remote it would not be of treason--and would prob go same route Berger went recently with slap on wrist after getting caught with pants down.
Very same reason you don't hear anything further on last minute pardon inquiry--despite having the nuts on Bill they know they if they get him it will open pandora's box on boths sides in the future.

Treason
n. Criminal act of betraying one's country as defined in Article II section 3 of the U.S. Constitution: "Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort." The act of treason requires overt acts, including disclosing government security secrets to other countries, friendly or unfriendly, when the information could cause harm to American security. Treason may also include revealing secrets to an unfriendly country, such as the design of a bomber a private company for the Defense Department is building. It also includes spying for a foreign power or doing damage to the government's operation and its agencies, particularly those involved in security. This differs from "sedition," which involves a plan to upset a government's operation
