lemme add this

I have coached HS hoops for a long time in seattle, 20 some years, and only one time did I attend those circus-parade-a- coach-in-his-school-mongrammed shirt-games during a LV summer ... Its really pathetic to watch some coaches posture, and even worse watching sonny vacarro (sleeze in spades) and the AAU coaches pimp and preen ... Not all coaches are like that, but so many are glad handers, liars, underhanded, what can you do for me nows, etc ...

Point of this is ...

I happend to be minding my own biz the summer i took a group of seattle kids down there and was sitting alone in a small annex gym, when Roy Williams came and sat down right next to me to watch a game ... Im not a jock sniffer and didnt say anything, then about 10 minutes into game he asked me nicely to look at my program .. a little while later, I asked him about Shaheen Holloway (seton hall to be) what he thought of him in the tourney, they had just beaten our team at buzzer ... Roy said he was a dandy ... and he was nice and we talked just a bit, but I didnt want to push it, etc ... when he left he said "goodbye" ...

Even to this day, I can spot a good man, Roy Williams is a good man ...

I can differentiate that from my experience with Jeff Van Gundy, when he was 3rd ass. at NY, he was a classless punk, who thought he was king dog ... Turd Gundy sat next to me courtside at a sonic game when I was writing some articles, I had no idea who he was, it was GPs first game vs MJ in an X-season tilt, Knix were playing Houston game after ... anyhow, I do like to talk and tried to make pleasant conversation with Van Gundy, who proceeded to ignore prob 3 of my 5 questions, his answers were grunts and no eye contact (he even tried to tell me olden polynice didnt have bad hands as i recall) ... Then Rudy T. walked up (i knew who he was even tho he was just an ass. at Rockets at the time) and he talked to Van Gundy, then I burned Van Gundy's face into my memory and lo-and-behold, he's out tackling an NBA player during playoffs years later, hehe

anyhow, I just tossed the Van Gundy anecdote in for chuckles, but it is true, he was pompous old-looking 30 y-o at the time ...

Roy is class, the amount he cares about his players makes that apparent ... leaving for NC, the only job he wouldve left KS for, isnt a selfish act, its in his blood, hardwired ... read Dean Smiths autobio that came out a couple years ago ... that was my main suspicion that Roy would leave off the bat, the powder blue is imprinted DNA and hard to shake

I just checked some of the KU boards and their fans are going ballistic. The Link

The fact that he stayed when his dream job was available to him 3 years ago speaks volumes to his loyalty I'd say. But sometimes when you're dream job comes around again, which in and of itself is pretty damn rare to get that opportunity twice, you have to take it. I don't blame him for leaving. I doubt he really believed the job would be available again. At least, not that quickly.

I was watching the news last night and laughing my ass off. Showing folks in the streets weeping. If they get Bill Self I will be surprised I really don't think he leaves Illinois

I agree with Pt gd,hoops and the others here.Roy is all class. Many moons ago he was at Point Pleasant,NJ for a North Carolina clinic.Dean did a half hour of BS that had everybody sleeping. Then Fogler and Williams did the real clinic and everyone started writting stuff down.
Kansas had a good guy for 15 yrs.
In the coaching circles he is well liked. There are many ass..h... coaching that nobody likes.Barnes at Texas,Quinn at Mizzou,Bibby at USC,Henson at New Mex St.These guys are all hated by their fellow brothers in coaching.Personalties, cheating, bad mouthing when recruiting, etc
Roy is a good guy.And so is Boe of the Cuse.
I agree with Roy about recruits going to play for a coach and not the school. And when coaches move I think they should be allowed to transfer. At least incoming freshmen.
Every kid I had that played D-1 went because they liked the coach 1st then came the school.
Roy has the talent right now to turn it around. Can't wait for those Duke-NC games....
Off to Texas tomr for 10 days...take care
