General manager Mike Milbury recently threatened to make changes if the Islanders' poor play continued, but has yet to make good on it. Milbury maintains the stance that the team has enough to win and should win. The answers are inside the locker room.

Meanwhile, the vultures are already starting to circle. Almost half of the league had at least one scout at Monday's game. Some of those teams present interesting possibilities, and one of them is the Avalanche.

Colorado doesn't play the Islanders until Feb. 21 and couldn't possibly have been there for game scouting. It is believed the Avalanche is growing impatient with slumping winger Alex Tanguay (1 goal, 3 assists) and might consider moving him. Colorado needs a big forward and might be interested in Brad Isbister, who is experiencing the same struggles as Tanguay, who makes $900,000.

Another is the Florida Panthers, who since summer have been looking to move Valeri Bure and the remaining two years on his $6-million contract. Viktor Kozlov, who makes $2.1 million, is another possibility. It should be noted that Panthers coach Mike Keenan never misses the opportunity to praise Dave Scatchard, whom he coached in Vancouver.

Colorado and Florida each could provide a winger that could join Yashin on the top line, a situation that surprisingly wasn't resolved in the summer. Rookie Mattias Weinhandl, called up Monday, is a crafty playmaker who seems a good fit there.

Yashin, despite his stature, typically doesn't like to discuss potential personnel matters.

"I believe Mike will do what's best for the team," he said. "He knows what to do. I can't say anything about that. From my perspective, I have to play hockey. It doesn't matter who's on my line. Any players, I will try to give my best. Sometimes it's working and sometimes it's not. But I don't want to make any comments. It's his decision
