For Democrats, Debate on Fox Reveals Divide
By RAYMOND HERNANDEZ and JACQUES STEINBERG
WASHINGTON, May 26 ? Four years ago, the leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus began looking for a television outlet to co-sponsor and broadcast a presidential debate to address the concerns of minority voters.

Only one news channel made an acceptable proposal, and an unlikely channel at that: Fox News, in what some Democrats viewed as an effort to associate itself with a group that could help it make good on its claim of presenting ?fair and balanced? news coverage.

But now that relationship is being shaken by the decision of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, and former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina to shun the debate, a move that has exposed fault lines among two major constituencies of the Democratic Party. While the withdrawal by the candidates frustrated members of the black caucus, it mollified liberals who had objected to the involvement of Fox News, whose programming includes some of the most conservative and pro-Republican commentary on the air.

The sensitivities surrounding the issue were evident this week when a spokeswoman for Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, said Mr. Richardson would not participate in the debate, which is scheduled for September. But only a few hours later, the spokeswoman phoned the reporter to say that she had misspoken, and that Mr. Richardson had yet to decide. In the interim the reporter had sought a response from the caucus on Mr. Richardson?s apparent withdrawal.

Meanwhile, members of the caucus have been pushing back, with press secretaries for caucus members getting ?talking points on how to cast the debate in a positive light,? as one staff member explained it.

The caucus is bent on salvaging what remains of the debate, and of a relationship that has produced other benefits. Not only has Fox given over precious air time for the debate, but an examination shows that its parent company, News Corporation, has also taken other steps to reach out to the group?s constituency, including making campaign donations to the caucus and its members and creating internship programs at predominantly black colleges.

You've been caught in your own web of lies and contradictions once again, and frankly it's one too many times. Apparently, you said that somebody had courage (not clear who you said that about, but whatever) and they clearly don't have that courage.

Flip responses from you don't change 'facts.'

Got it?

I'm sure Edwards after remarking there is no war on terror-- would not liked to be asked to explain this recent declaration--

Al Qaeda No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahiri Urges Iraqis to Take Jihad to Other Middle Eastern Countries
Sunday , May 27, 2007

The deputy leader of Al Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, has urged supporters in Iraq to extend their "holy war" to other Middle Eastern countries.

In a letter sent to the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq in the past few weeks, Zawahiri claims that it is defeating U.S. forces and urges followers to expand their campaign of terror.

He conjures a vision of an Islamic state comprising Lebanon, Palestine and Syria, where Al Qaeda has already gained its first footholds.

? Visit FOXNews.com's Iraq Center for more in-depth coverage.

The goal of an Islamic "greater Syria," first outlined by Zawahiri two years ago, is detailed in the letter amid growing concern about the activities of new groups under Al Qaeda's influence in the countries concerned.

In Lebanon yesterday, Islamist militants of various nationalities from Fatah al-Islam were holding out under renewed army bombardment in Nahr al-Bared camp near Tripoli. Many fought and trained in Iraq.

The little-known Jaish al-Islam claims to be holding Alan John-ston, the BBC journalist, in Gaza, where militants disillusioned with Hamas are said to be drifting to Al Qaeda.

Jaish al-Islam has demanded the release of a woman who tried to blow herself up during the 2005 bombing of a wedding reception in the Jordanian capital of Amman, an operation ordered by Al Qaeda in Iraq.

In Syria, the Al Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Suri is believed to have been arrested, but cells are said to be recruiting in Palestinian camps near Damascus, the capital. Al Qaeda Web sites are demanding the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.

Zawahiri's letter was sent to Abu Hamza al-Muhajer, the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, and intercepted by a Middle Eastern intelligence service.

A senior American security source said he was aware of the letter and Al Qaeda's growing emphasis on spreading jihad through a volatile region.

The source said Zawahiri, a Sunni, was determined to prevent Lebanon falling into the hands of the Shiite Hezbollah movement, which has tried to bring down the government.

"Al Qaeda is trying very hard to seize a foothold in Syria," the American source added.

Why would any group other then Republicans want to be on Fox. Fox is a Republican first others second network. By the way their still first. But for 5th quarter in a row there numbers are down. I'm not sure if that's a trend for all cable news or not. I do know evening news on reg net works is down last 10 years.

:mj07: if they are anything like the current prez, that's exactly what they'll do:)

If that was true, super liberal David Gregory would never be let into a Bush press conference...

who the hell would want to be in a press pool and have to look at a liar like bush. ?

What would be the point of asking an inveterate liar like bush any questions ?

And now i am reading this man is screwing soldiers out of pay.

Why pay the soldiers more , that's less for cheneys' companies.

Cheney and bush could not stoop any lower than to do this to the soldiers

Why--maybe cause they have more veiwers primetime than all other cable networks combined?

Same reason why any reb or independent would want to be on CNN cbs nbc ect.

Are there any rebs-independents or moderate dems that refused free coverage on any network despite the lean?

The question you must ask DJV-- is why liberals refuse exposer on any major network and no one else does.

Heck none of these cable news networks draw enough to bother. Check out the estimated 3.4 million that watch last week. How many watch American Idol 35 million. They have to get on major net work to get any attention.
