Bama makes inquiry about Nick Saban

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The lack of a public pronouncement by the University of Alabama about the future of head football coach Mike Shula stems, at least in part, from the school's efforts to persuade Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban to take the job.
Several people who've talked to people involved in the process say that someone representing Alabama contacted Saban's agent, Jimmy Sexton, and they discussed whether he would be interested in the Alabama job. Those people say he has an offer on the table.
If Alabama ends up staying with Shula, it likely means Saban said no.

After watching Shula try tolearn on the job for four years, Alabama does not want to fire him unless it feels confident it can replace him with an experienced head coach who has proven himself a winner.

Saban's still in the process of rebuilding the Dolphins - he's 13-13 in the middle of his second season there - but he's one of the most respected head coaches in the business.
All he did at LSU was win the 2001 and 2003 SEC titles and the 2003 BCS national championship.

If Alabama is going to fire Shula a year after giving him a new contract with a hefty pay raise, the school wants to hit a home run. Saban would be a walk-off grand slam.

Can you blame a school for trying?
It's a move reminiscent of Auburn's attempt to secure Bobby Petrino before releasing Tommy Tuberville three years ago, but any parallels to Jetgate are few and far between.

As upset as Auburn fans were with the 2003 season - which started with a No. 6 national ranking and ended with an 8-5 record - they rallied around Tuberville when word of his impending demise got out.

If Shula is returning - which the university has not confirmed - many Alabama fans will be bitterly disappointed that their school wasn't able to lure someone like Saban.
At the time of Jetgate, Tuber ville had just won his second straight Iron Bowl to improve his record to 3-2 against Ala bama. He already had one outright SEC West title and a trip to the SEC Championship Game on his resume.
Shula has yet to beat Auburn or LSU, period.

If he returns, it'll be as a wounded duck.
Ask Tuberville what an administration that questions your competence does for recruiting. The 2004 Auburn signing class took a hit. The 2007 Alabama class is sure to suffer as well.
Nor will it be easy for Shula to hire the best and brightest assistants if he makes staff changes, which he's expected to do. What big-name coaches want to come work for a head coach who's now on the clock?

If you can't beat'em, join'em.
Shula hasn't beaten Tuberville. He has to hope he can join him as a coach who came back from the brink. Kevin Scarbinsky's column appears Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Saban's agent: Coach not interested in UA job

Wednesday, November 22, 2006
Neal McCready
Press-Register Staff Writer

Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban does not have an offer to replace Mike Shula as the head football coach at the University of Alabama, his agent said Wednesday.

Jimmy Sexton, Saban?s Memphis-based representative, dismissed a published report that someone representing Alabama had contacted Saban and discussed whether he would be interested in the job. "We haven?t even had conversations with them," Sexton said.

Saban is expected to address the issue following today?s NFL game in Detroit between the Dolphins and the Detroit Lions. Saban, 55, is in the second year of a five-year contract with Miami that goes through the conclusion of the 2009 season. The deal, signed in December 2004, gives Saban full control of the Dolphins? football operations and pays the Fairmont, W.Va., native and 1973 Kent State graduate between $4.5 million and $5 million per season.

The Dolphins were 9-7 in Saban?s first season and are 4-6 this season after winning the last three games. Miami plays today at 11:30 a.m. against the Detroit Lions.

"He?s happy in Miami and he feels he?s turning the corner," Sexton said.

The Press-Register reported Tuesday that no decision has been reached regarding Shula?s job status. UA Athletics Director Mal Moore met with Shula Tuesday, then released his first public statement of the week Wednesday afternoon.

"As is customary at the end of the regular season, we are evaluating our football program," Moore said in a university release. "We are evaluating every aspect of our program and this is not a process that I wish to discuss at length in a public forum. We are bowl-eligible and we hope to remain positioned to play in a bowl game.

"We remain firm in our commitment to our student-athletes. I am proud of their efforts throughout this season and we are more determined than ever to return Alabama football to its rightful place among college football?s elite."

The statement went on to indicate that "neither Mr. Moore nor Coach Shula will be available to the media until after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend."

On his Sunday teleconference, Shula said the entire football program was under a comprehensive review, including his role as the offensive play caller. Sources within the UA system said Tuesday that staff changes were expected if Shula returns for his fifth season at his alma mater.

University of Alabama President Robert Witt extended a vote of confidence to Shula last week, prior to Alabama?s loss to Auburn, Shula?s fourth consecutive Iron Bowl loss and the program?s fifth in a row to the Tigers. The defeat dropped the Crimson Tide?s record to 6-6 this season, and Shula has a 26-23 overall record at his alma mater.

I am thankful for so very much this holiday season, including my 1 year old son, my lovely wife and supportive network of family and friends. Would it be too much for me to ask from Santa this year that Nick Saban return to Baton Rouge?? ;)

Seriously, I feel Les Miles will lead this team back to a mediocre level in the SEC w/in the next season or 2. Watch what happens next season when Bo Pelini takes a HC job.

Totally Agree with you CIE

Totally Agree with you CIE

Les Miles is an imposter! THe worst coach in the SEC by far, when Pelini and Fisher leave and he promotes the goons he brought with him from OSU, you will see LSU sink in to mediocrity for 5 plus years. Les Miles is guilty of the biggest misalcoation of resources (talent) since hurricane Katrina.
