Just had to chuckle. According to Scott's vaunte Sagarin, the number 1 colege hoops team, on the predictor model, is Texas Tech. Who could question that sort of calculation - which by the way is allegedly the same formula he uses for football? I know I would unload on Texas Tech -8 at home v Illinois, wouldnt everyone? LMAO.

I am not a big college hoops fan until conf. play starts and of course March Madness.

However, I will defend Sagarin. This is what he says....

In ELO CHESS, only winning and losing matters; the score margin is of no consequence,
which makes it very "politically correct". However it is less accurate in its predictions for upcoming games than is the PURE POINTS, in which the score margin is the only thing that matters.

PURE POINTS is also known as PREDICTOR, BALLANTINE, RHEINGOLD, WHITE OWL and is the best single PREDICTOR of future games.

The teams are now CONNECTED and the ratings are UNBIASED.

That is, the ratings and schedule strengths are now based SOLELY on results of this season.

The overall RATING is a synthesis of the two diametrical opposites, ELO CHESS and PURE POINTS (PREDICTOR). Div I games only

Why not use his overall ratings model where it has Illinois #1 and Texas Tech #9??? Especially if you disagree with his predictor model. For CFB I use his regular model, the model he says is most accurate.

Then again, I use computers mainly to see/compare SOS, not to predict outcomes.

His football rankings have Harvard at #38 ahead of teams like Alabama and Arkansas. I would love to see Harvard roll into Tuscaloosa or Fayetteville and pull out a victory. What a joke!

Because you are wrong. There is no "regular model" - he simply combines two models together. Nowhere does he say the "overall ratings model", as you call it, is either a model or the most accurate. He has quite clearly always stated his view that the predictor model is the most reliable. It would decide, in his view, who would win games when ratings are compared. If you are Number 1, his computer obviously says you beat everyone. And in your world of course it must be, as that is the how the "overall model" as you call it puts Cal over Texas.

As for SOS, it obviously is going to be determined in large part how he ranks the teams. Thus you are relying on his rankings.

You crack me up on this issue. WHY THE HELL DO YOU HATE SAGARIN? I never said to use Sagarin to predict scores. I said "I think Sagarin is the best computer poll to use for SOS." So please, drop the predictions and the hoops ratings. Why talk about hoops? I am talking about CFB and SOS!

Nowhere does he say the "overall ratings model", as you call it,

"The overall RATING" is his exact words. You gonna flip :cursin: over about that? :)

I personally use the "regular model" or you can say "the overall rating" or you can say overall ratings model" I USE THAT ONE! I advise you to use the same! Then again, I do not put "much" weight on computers to predict outcomes. However, they are fun to look at. I use them for SOS! And I think Sagarin is the best for SOS! Not talking about predictions or hoops.

As for SOS, it obviously is going to be determined in large part how he ranks the teams. Thus you are relying on his rankings.

YES IT DOES! Sagarin also factors in home/away games. Very important. He does not have to have all 117 teams ranked in exact perfect order for his analysis to be valid. I am arguing that his analysis is the best of all the computers in terms of SOS. Of course you can find flaws in Sagarin (as you seem to love doing).

Master Capper

I have been pointing this out to Scott for over two months but yet he continues to beleive that Sagarin's is the final answer.

I think you and Sun Tzu are smart guys (despite Sun Tzu calling me a dumbass) and I am trying to make you see the light! Always enjoy reading your posts even though I disagree with you majority of the time! That is why I keep on asking you to tell me why the NCAA SOS is better than Sagarin. You always put down Sagarin and pump up the NCAA site. BTW, Sagarin is "not" biased. So that is not a good argument. If, and a big "IF" you read my posts, you will know exactly why I prefer Sagarin and why I think the NCAA SOS is bogus. Why would you know? BECAUSE I POSTED MY EXPLANATION!
