Think last time I asked you a dental question you were still going to school....how are you?
here is my question.....
My 5 yr old granddaughter last month had a cavity..they had to do root canal...I thought maybe its a baby tooth so just let it go but its in the back, not front teeth...
My daughter who lives in austin is into organic foods and veggies, grass feed meat,1% milk, etc for her daughter....my granddaughter was up here in NY for 7 weeks this summer....every morning I would walk her to my deli and she would have breakfast....she got a donut with sprinkles and a chocolate 2% milk almost every morning....grandpa got to spoil her for 7 weeks..my daughter kind of let me slide knowing once she goes back to texas the vacation is over...she does get a few candies like sour patch and a few others but not a lot....the only thing with sugar my daughter gives her are Honey nut cheerios....
when my daughter got back to texas she informed me of a cavity and then the root canal...I pleaded guilty...it had to be me because I was the only one giving her anything with sugar....
Of course my wife and other 2 daughters found me guilty with a life sentence of no sugars...for my girl... I pleaded guilty...but was wondering...is there something else that could of caused the root canal...she does brush her teeth every night...she is allowed ice cream and snow cones on hot days in austin with her mom.....or am I guilty....just was wondering what you think....

that cavity has taken root over a period of a long time, not any doughnuts the child
has had for seven weeks.

geezz no guilt tripping

and to use that to stop a kid from having sugar for the rest of her life.

when she gets where she can buy her own at school, in stores, etc as she grows
up you will have created a sugar monster.

This is a common topic for me as a pediatric dentist. KOD is correct. There is no way for decay to go from zero to into the nerve in 7 weeks. Impossible. That puppy has been brewing for at least 10 months.

My guess is frequent juice. That's usually the cause. It doesn't matter if it's organic- liquid sugars will cause cavities to happen in between the baby molars. That and a lack of flossing. It's not the quantity of juice but the frequency- little sips here and there is much worse. Keep it to one sitting max.

But that's not on you- and not that it's about pointing fingers, but let your daughter know. Because if she thinks it was from that 7 week window she is unlikely to change what started the process in the first place.
