A top Harvard constitutional law professor is calling for an impeachment investigation into Donald Trump for obstruction of justice, branding the president?s firing of FBI Director James Comey as an ?obvious effort to interfere with a probe involving national security.?

To ?wait for the results of the multiple investigations underway is to risk tying our nation?s fate to the whims of an authoritarian leader,? Professor Laurence Tribe wrote in an opinion piece in The Washington Post on Saturday. Tribe added that Trump?s conduct ?strongly suggests that he poses a danger to our system of government.?

After Comey?s firing last week, Tribe joined the legal advisory board of Impeach Trump Now, a campaign pushing for an impeachment probe into the president.

?It is now up to Congress to save the Constitution by initiating impeachment proceedings,? Tribe said in a statement Friday when he joined the board. ?Trump can?t say ?You?re fired? to the House of Representatives.?

Tribe wrote in the Post that ?ample reasons existed to worry about this president, and to ponder the extraordinary remedy of impeachment even before the Comey firing.? He cited Trump?s apparent ?brazen defiance? of the foreign emoluments clause of the Constitution, which bars a president from receiving foreign funds.

But Tribe is particularly troubled by Comey?s firing and its aftermath. After the ouster last week, Trump appeared to encourage Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy Rod Rosenstein to provide cover for a decision Trump conceded he had already made and scrambled to work out some consistent ?story? for Comey?s firing.

Tribe said Trump?s actions in firing Comey were ?vastly more serious? than the ?third-rate burglary? that Richard Nixon tried to cover up in Watergate. On Friday, journalist James Fallows wrote in the Atlantic that Trump?s scandal ?looks worse than Watergate.?

?The crucial thing is that the prospect [of impeachment] now be taken seriously, that the machinery of removal be reactivated, and that the need to use it become the focus of political discourse going into 2018,? Tribe concluded

Trump is said to have passed on highly-restricted 'code word' information during an Oval Office meeting with Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, the Washington Post reported. The 'code-word' information is said to relate to a terror threat to planes using bombs contained in electronic devices like laptops. An unnamed US official told the paper that the president 'revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies'.

The President is also said to have boasted to Lavrov: 'I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day.' :142smilie:facepalm:

The White House has declined to comment on the report. Bob Corker (right), chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in the aftermath of the report that the White House was facing a 'downward spiral'.

WASHINGTON ? The classified intelligence that President Trump disclosed in a meeting last week with Russian officials at the White House was provided by Israel, according to a current and a former American official familiar with how the United States obtained the information. The revelation adds a potential diplomatic complication to the episode.

Israel is one of the United States? most important allies and a major intelligence collector in the Middle East. The revelation that Mr. Trump boasted about some of Israel?s most sensitive information to the Russians could damage the relationship between the two countries. It also raises the possibility that the information could be passed to Iran, Russia?s close ally and Israel?s main threat in the Middle East.

WASHINGTON ― Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to serve as special prosecutor overseeing the investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election.

In a statement, Rosenstein stressed that his decision ?is not a finding that crimes have been committed or that any prosecution is warranted.? But he said he?d determined ?based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command.?

WASHINGTON ? Several White House advisers and personal associates of President Trump have urged him to hire an experienced outside lawyer to help him deal with issues arising from a surging controversy over whether his campaign had ties to Russia, according to several people briefed on the conversations.

The recommendations came even before a special counsel was named on Wednesday to lead the investigation into any collusion between the Trump presidential campaign and Russian officials.

Mr. Trump?s aides and allies were said to be especially concerned by the revelation that James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director fired by Mr. Trump, has contemporaneous, detailed memos reconstructing conversations with the president.:scared

While the office of the president is represented by the White House counsel, presidents in the past have employed outside lawyers when their private actions were called into question.:SIB

Mr. Trump has signaled he is likely to hire a new lawyer, but has not yet made a decision, according to three people who have spoken with him. Aides to Mr. Trump did not immediately comment on his discussions.

Mr. Trump is said to recognize that he needs help beyond the White House counsel. But he is deeply cautious in selecting people he trusts, and he adds new people to his orbit slowly.

He has a personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, and a tax lawyer who worked on his business issues before he went into the White House, Sheri Dillon. Daniel Petrocelli, an alumnus of the O.J. Simpson civil trial, was the lawyer to whom Mr. Trump turned when he was dealing with a class-action fraud case against the defunct Trump University.

In conversations with allies inside and outside the White House, Mr. Trump, who rarely assumes blame for the crises he creates, has criticized his staff as serving him poorly. He has spared no one, including the White House counsel, according to two people who have had direct discussions with him.

Yet Mr. Trump?s senior aides recognize that they may have to be restrained in making significant changes after his coming foreign trip, as they had hoped to do. Two senior administration officials bluntly predicted that firing anyone would be difficult now.

Many staff members describe an atmosphere of diminished morale in the White House, but they also insist that the news media frenzy surrounding daily disclosures about Mr. Trump is far out of proportion with reality.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

One question

why would he need outside council if he is innocent. He has always been able to talk for himself before now.

Former FBI Director James Comey was once so uncomfortable about meeting President Donald Trump that he once tried to blend into the White House curtains to avoid being noticed, The New York Times reported Thursday.

Benjamin Wittes, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a Comey friend, told the Times of a January White House ceremony to thank law enforcement for providing security at the inauguration.

The newspaper reported:

?Mr. Comey ― who is 6 feet 8 inches tall and was wearing a dark blue suit that day ― told Mr. Wittes that he tried to blend in with the blue curtains in the back of the room, in the hopes that Mr. Trump would not spot him and call him out.?

I don't even think the Comey stuff is what will bring him down. The new investigation is likely to uncover all sorts of other Trump dirt. The toughest part will be deciding which charge(s) to pursue.

Thankfully the judiciary branch and intelligence agencies of the country are *mostly* non partisan entities that take great pride in their work. That's bad news for someone like Trump who is used to buying and bullying loyalty at the expense of fairness and neutrality.

One official read sections of it to a New York Times reporter, leaving press secretary Sean Spicer flummoxed as he left town on Trump's first overseas voyage as president.
'I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job,' Trump said, according to the summary. 'I faced great pressure because of Russia. That's taken off.'
Trump also assured the Russian envoys: 'I'm not under investigation.'
