DAVIS' BACKUP LIKELY TO GET MOST CARRIES

Yonus Davis' bid to return to the San Jose State backfield suffered a setback Wednesday when the senior tailback aggravated a left-ankle sprain early in practice. Davis' status for the winless Spartans' game Saturday at Utah State is uncertain.

"We may take him on the trip, but we just don't know," Coach Dick Tomey said. "He's either well or he's not, and right now, he's not well."

Davis, who rushed for 1,007 yards last season, was hurt on SJSU's first offensive play of the season three weeks ago at Arizona State. Davis practiced for the first time since the injury on Tuesday without incident, but he aggravated the ankle minutes into the workout Wednesday and didn't return.

"I'm trying to come back, working hard, but I tweaked it again," Davis said. "It'll depend on the next couple of days. There is no reason to make it worse."

? Even if Davis is available, sophomore Dominique Hunsucker figures to continue to carry the bulk of the SJSU running game. Hunsucker, a high school tailback who opened this season at safety, made his first start at running back Saturday at Stanford and rushed 10 times for a team-high 26 yards.

"I thought Dom did some great things," Tomey said. "He didn't have a lot of places to run, but that's another issue."

? Center Justin Paysinger, who missed the first two games because of a back injury, could see a larger role this weekend. Paysinger was on the field for about 25 plays against Stanford and
hasn't been slowed this week in practice.
