Johan Santana has been scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday due to elbow discomfort.

Manager Jerry Manuel made the announcement after Monday's loss to the Phillies. It sounds like the Mets are hoping it's a short-term issue right now, but with the club having little left to play for, it's possible that he'll be shut down for an extended period of time. He'll be examined on Tuesday.

"Elbow problems" a.k.a. giving up, a.k.a. packing it in....and I don't even blame him all the rest of the mets name players gave up a while ago. If you look at the mets injuries and how long they have been out...it doesn't add up...the franchise is a joke. t:142smilie

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Johan Santana will need season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow, but should be ready for the start of the 2010 season.

And the Mets' fanbase breathes a collective sigh of relief. A examination by Dr. David Altchek revealed that Santana has bone chips his elbow that need some cleaning. It certainly could have been worse, but the Mets have nothing to play for, so perhaps this is a blessing in disguise. He finishes the season at 13-9 with a 3.13 ERA. Santana has four years remaining on a six-year, $137.5 million contract with the Mets.
