ST. LOUIS (M.Morris) +105 over N,Y, YANKEES (Pettitte)

Matt Morris is one of the top righthanders in the majors
right now (3.06 ERA) and there's no way he should be
an underdog in this series. The Yankees have been
dreadful at home vs. righthanders, particularly in day
games (2-6, -$1160 with 2,8 runs per game). Andy
Pettitte is having an awful year (-$430, 5.33 ERA . . .
8.31 last two starts) and the Cardinals have averaged
a remarkable 7.9 runs per game vs. lefties. And we might
see a letdown by the Yankees following last night's emotional
300th win for Roger Clemens.

Marquis to start if Hampton can't

By DAVID O'BRIEN
Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer

Seattle -- Jason Marquis is back with the Braves and could be thrust into a big role as early as today.

Mike Hampton is scheduled to start this afternoon against the Mariners, but the Braves don't sound overly confident about the status of Hampton's groin injury.

"If Hampton has trouble warming up, Jason will start," manager Bobby Cox said.

If they have to turn to Marquis, the Braves hope he can continue progress made at Class AAA Richmond, where he went 5-3 with a 3.26 ERA in 10 starts since being demoted. He was 3-1 with a 1.16 ERA in his last four starts at Richmond.

"Maybe they got him straightened out," Cox said.

Marquis was recalled Thursday when the Braves placed reliever Roberto Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained abdominal muscle.

Marquis lost the fifth-starter's job to Horacio Ramirez in spring training, but the right-hander made the opening-day roster anyway because of injuries.

Marquis had no decisions and a 3.48 ERA in two starts, then was rocked for five runs in two innings of his only relief appearance before getting sent to the minors.

"I wanted to prove to them that I'm not a Triple-A pitcher," Marquis said. "It was pretty much just fine-tuning my mechanics and getting consistent. I feel good. I got a lot accomplished down there. Eight of my 10 starts I gave up two runs or less."

The right-hander said he made progress working with Richmond pitching coach Guy Hansen, who has known him since 1998, and catcher Johnny Estrada.

"He's a great catcher," Marquis said. "We were on the same wavelength. I didn't have to think as much on the mound."

Since going 8-5 with a 3.86 ERA in his first 15 starts last season, Marquis is 0-4 with an 8.29 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) in the majors.

Chipper, Furcal back

Chipper Jones and Rafael Furcal were back in the lineup for Friday's series opener vs. Seattle, but Jones will probably be rested again today when the Braves face Mariners left-hander Jamie Moyer.

Since jamming his left wrist on May 31, the switch-hitting Jones has had difficulty batting against left-handers and sat out two games against lefty starters in Oakland.

Furcal missed Thursday's game after taking a line drive off his right forearm Wednesday. He said most of the stiffness in the arm and elbow was gone Friday.

Cox likes Safeco

Cox hadn't been to Seattle since 1985, when he managed the Blue Jays, and was impressed Friday with everything about Safeco Field, which opened in 1999.

"This ain't exactly the Kingdome," he cracked, referring to the now-demolished former home of the Mariners and Seahawks. "Everything about this place is nice."

He made it a point to add, "And the great thing about this stadium is, it's got a person in each seat. That really makes a difference in the electricity, the atmosphere. They've got a great team, and they come out to watch them."

Facts and figures

The Mariners are 17-0 in day games. . . . Hampton was drafted by the Mariners in 1990, went 1-3 with a 9.53 ERA in 13 games (three starts) as a rookie in 1993, then was traded to Houston.

Matt Morris, coming off his worst start of the season, will be monitored closely in his start today due to an uncomfortable knot below his right shoulder blade.
Morris isn't likely to go long in today's game. ''It's something you have to take seriously, and we are,'' manager Tony La Russa said.

StatFox is a very good service, I use it and also win money, so I'm very satisfied with it.

Ray, I had to really dig to find any adv or disadv from the ump. Almost 50-50 until you get to these numbers.

Atl 2-5 with both win at home.
Sea 5-5 and 2-2 at home.
Hampton 1-2
Moyer 2-0
Atl has never played a road game with this ump.

This is about as nuetral as you can find on any ump.

Good luck today.
