BEGINNING MONDAY AUGUST 18

Kansas City at NY Yankees (3) 18th, 19th, 20th

The Yankees have come on like gangbusters at home (won 20 of the last 29), but the never-say-die Royals have just as much incentive to play well here what with the White Sox nipping at their heels. Prices will be huge on the Pinstripers, so we?ll shy away from laying more than 2-1 vs. a team with playoff aspirations of its own. We?re willing to take a shot with the rejuvenated Jose Lima (KC is 8-1, +$805 in his nine starts), if he?s off the DL, provided that KC has lost the previous game. PREFERRED: Lima off a Yankees? win.

Texas at Detroit (3) 18th, 19th, 20th

Normally the poor road play (22-37, -$260) of the Rangers would instill confidence in their host. However, the Tigers have the worst home record (14-42, -$1595) in MLB by far and we?re not about to try and sort out one match up in a combination of uninspiring scenarios. Suffice it to say that Matt Roney and Wilfredo Ledezma are the only two current Tigers? starters in the black at home (6 starts, +$260). PREFERRED: None.

Anaheim at Chicago White Sox (3) 18th, 19th, 20th

It will be interesting too see if the Angels? disappointing pitching staff (starters have a 5.36 ERA on the road) can hold the Sox? offense at bay. Now that the halos have fallen off the Angels, Anaheim may require divine providence to do so. PREFERRED: White Sox in all games.

BEGINNING TUESDAY AUGUST 19

Chicago Cubs at Houston (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

The race for first place in the NL Central continues. The Cubs trail the Astros, but are up 5-4 (+$140) in this series. However, please note that these teams played a four-game series in the Windy City last week, before we went to press, and we?re reluctant to take a stand on this series without those results. PREFERRED: None.

Philadelphia at Milwaukee (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

The Brewers have been simply awful at home (21-39, -$1325) and we see no reason for that to change against one of the best staffs in MLB. We?ll be getting some fairly reasonable prices with classy starters like Vicente Padilla, Kevin Millwood, Randy Wolf and Brett Myers and there is no reason not to take advantage with a team vying for the wildcard vs. one trying to wind up with fewer losses than the Mets or Padres. PREFERRED: Phillies in all games.

Pittsburgh at St. Louis (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

It?s time for the Cardinals to step up and jump on a team they should be taking behind the woodshed every night. St. Louis has managed just a 5-5 split (-$360) so far, but should do better this time around vs. the depleted Pirates. However, picking the Cardinals to win more than a game here with a starting corps that is extremely shaky after Woody Williams, is an iffy proposition vs. a team that is +$930 on the road and +$630 as a dog. PREFERRED: Pirates vs. all but Williams.

Florida at Colorado (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

Never count the Rockies out at home. As hot as Florida has been over the last two plus months, we look for Colorado to return the favor and win this series. If Shawn Chacon, Darren Oliver or Jason Jennings gets the call, we?ll be ready. Colorado is 25-3 (+$2375) in that trio?s 28 home starts. PREFERRED: Chacon/Oliver/Jennings.

Cincinnati at Arizona (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

A depleted Reds? offense is bound to have its hands full vs. the likes of four of the five Diamondbacks? starters (Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Brandon Webb and Miguel Batista). Meanwhile, four of the five current Cincinnati starters have an ERA over 5.00 on the road with Jose Acevedo (3.00 ERA, .225 BAA) the lone exception. Try him vs. Elmer Dessens only and the ?Backs in the rest of the match ups, odds permitting. PREFERRED: Acevedo vs. Dessens/ Arizona at -$175 or less.

NY Mets at San Diego (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

The Mets don?t shine too often on the road (25-34), but they?re not to be out done by the Padres who have the third worst home record (24-36) in MLB. San Diego?s record vs. southpaws at home (7-13, averaging 3.6 RPG) has us looking hard at New York?s lefties. PREFERRED: Glavine/Leiter.

Montreal at Los Angeles (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

The Expos are coming off a four-game series with the tough Giants in Canada and had to fly to the west coast without a day off. That?s not a great success formula for beating up on the best pitching staff (3.03 ERA) in MLB. Sounds like time to load up on the Dodgers, right? Just a sec! Montreal?s entire starting corps is righthanded and LA is averaging an anemic 3.2 RPG vs. righties at home ($745 in the red). Sounds like El Paso time for us. PREFERRED: None.

Atlanta at San Francisco (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

The Giants and Braves are on a collision course to meet in the NL playoffs. Since both teams have comfortable leads in their respective divisions, it?s not likely either team will be doing anything to tip off strategies in October. Still, you?ll want to play against Kirk Rueter (0-3 vs. the Braves with a 6.43 ERA and a .348 BAA since 2000). PREFERRED: Braves vs. Rueter.

Oakland at Boston (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

Second series in less than a week between these two contenders. Boston is simply lethal (39-19) at home while the A?s are quite ordinary (27-32, -$1765) on the road. But, like the Houston/Cubs series above, this is too important a series to handicap without information from the prior meeting. PREFERRED: None.

Minnesota at Cleveland (2) 19th, 20th

The Twins are chasing both the Royals and White Sox in the AL Central and can?t afford a slip-up in this mini-series. Minny should be on the alert, however, having already lost five of seven (-$450) earlier this year. But, the Twins have had some problems vs. lefties on the road (-$170), so let?s key on the Tribe?s trio of southpaws. PREFERRED: Sabathia/Traber/Anderson.

Seattle at Toronto (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

We?d be surprised if the Blue Jays have much left in the tank vs. one of the best road teams (36-22 this season, +$880) in MLB over the past five years. A so-so Mariners? offense is sure to find the Sky Dome as well as Toronto?s pitching staff, except for Roy Halladay, of course, to its liking. PREFERRED: Halladay/Mariners vs. all others.

Tampa Bay at Baltimore (3) 19th, 20th, 21st

Last series of the year between these AL East rivals. If you?ve been backing the Devil Rays since the break (13-11, +$720), you?re a happy man and that good fortune is likely to continue should Victor Zambrano (Rays are 5-3, +$745 in his eight road starts) take the hill in Camden Yards. The rest of the series should belong to the Birds. PREFERRED: Zambrano/Orioles vs. all but Zambrano.

BOSTON (Martinez) -$140 over SEATTLE (Pineiro)

The Mariners put 10 runs on the board last night in nine

innings vs. the Red Sox, two more runs than they've managed to

score against Pedro Martinez in 77 innings. Martinez is 10-0

lifetime vs. Seattle with a 0.94 ERA, 6-0 in the last three plus

years with a .159 BAA. Joel Pineiro has been blasted in his last

three outings with a 6.32 ERA almost 3.5 RPG more than Martinez

has allowed over the same time. M's continued inability to hit

righties at home (-$920) does them in again.

Colorado at NY Mets (4) 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th

The Mets gave up 21 runs and lost two of three in an earlier series in Colorado, but the Rockies are so bad on the road (19-41, -$1840) that we?ll give the New Yorkers an even chance to garner a split. New York has been hitting much better lately and the offense should continue to be productive against the Rockies poor pitching staff. Al Leiter has been on a roll (3-1, 30 innings, six runs) since coming off the DL and is 9-3 lifetime vs. Colorado with a 3.80 ERA. BEST BET: Leiter.

Houston at Cincinnati (3) 15th, 16th, 17th

The Astros, winners of 10 of 11 (+$740) vs. Cincy, are in the midst of a playoff war and are not likely to relax. The Astros? best hopes lie with Ron Villone, who has filled in nicely for the Astros since being elevated to a starter and is 2-0 lifetime with a 2.35 ERA vs. his old team and Wade Miller, who is 5-0 lifetime vs. Cincy and 2-0 this year with a 2.38 ERA. The Reds? Danny Graves has been mauled on three occasions this season (0-3, 8.47 ERA, 40 hits plus walks in 17 innings) and we?ll be shocked, but pleased if he gets the nod in this series. BEST BET: Miller/Villone /Astros vs. Graves.

Arizona at Atlanta (4) 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th

The Diamondbacks are alive in the wildcard race and need every ?W? desperately, but that doesn?t mean they?ll gain much ground against the best home team (40-17, +$1235) in the NL. We?ll skip the first projected match up featuring both teams? lowest ranked starter, Shane Reynolds and Elmer Dessens. Go against Randy Johnson. He?s yet to find his rhythm and is only 3-4 lifetime vs. Atlanta with a 5.17 ERA. The Braves have manhandled southpaws (21-8, +$1090) all season and, with the Big Unit as the opponent, the price will be attractive. BEST BET: Braves vs. Johnson.

San Diego at Florida (3) 15th, 16th, 17th

The Marlins took two of three in San Diego (+$100) and that pattern will continue in the Sunshine state. We hate to lay 2-1 or better, but with Dontrelle Willis (11-2, 2.56 ERA) scheduled, we?re willing to make an exception. San Diego is 10-21 (-$810) vs. southpaws including 3-8 on the road averaging just 3.5 RPG. The Marlins have won and 14 of 19 and have a reasonable chance of brooming the Padres. BEST BET: Marlins in all games.

Tampa Bay at Cleveland (4) 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th

The Devil Rays may not have a lot of talent, but they seem to be a reflection of their manager, Lou Pinella, and, as such, have adopted a never quit mentality. But, the Indians are playing hard as well and have been particularly successful at home vs. righthanders (24-17, +$815). Combine that with the Devil Rays? poor road play vs. righties (12-25) and you?re in business. BEST BET: Indians when righty meets righty.

Chicago White Sox at Texas (3) 15th, 16th, 17th

This is a first-time meeting between the contending White Sox and a beleaguered team that has seen its super star ever so politely asked to be traded. While it?s become fashionable to knock A-Rod, one can hardly blame him for being disenchanted with a team that has already started 14 different pitchers with more to come in September no doubt. And, none of those alleged starters comes close to matching either Esteban Loaiza or Bartolo Colon (0.56 ERA, 6.2 H+W ratio last two starts). Two great offenses, but only one good pitching staff. BEST BET: Colon/Loaiza.

Minnesota at Kansas City (3) 15th, 16th, 17th

As bad as the Twins have been playing, they?re still very much alive in the AL Central. Minny?s track record (4-8, -$700) vs. the Royals, however, is not good and time is beginning to run out on last year?s AL Central division winners. There?s no way the wildcard is coming out of this division, so this series will take on a winner-take-all aura. None of the early match ups look inviting, so for now we?ll take a pass. BEST BET: None.

Toronto at Oakland (3) 15th, 16th, 17th

Another first time meeting in mid-August and this time we have a fading team up against a superior squad fighting for its playoff life. The Blue Jays have lost 15 of 21 since the All-Star break and it might have been 18 of 21 if it wasn?t for Roy Halladay. He?s scheduled here, but he?s likely to draw Barry Zito and, slump or no, we?ll pass. We can?t imagine the Blue Jays winning either of the other two games vs. a team with a 40-18 (+$935) record at home. BEST BET: A?s vs. all but Halladay.

Detroit at Anaheim (3) 15th, 16th, 17th

It was about this time a year ago that the rest of the league was beginning to take the Angels seriously. This time around the question is whether Anaheim can stay out of last place in the AL West. When a team falls this far this fast, it?s not wise to back them especially when they figure to be a huge favorite in every game. However, trying to make a case for the Tigers (-$3060 overall) in any game is harder than nominating Saddam Hussein for the Nobel Peace Prize. BEST BET: None.

Boston at Seattle (3) 15th, 16th, 17th

To say this series will be played with a playoff mentality is almost an understatement. Both teams have legitimate shots for a division title and/or a wildcard slot and it?s also possible that one of them will be sitting on the sidelines come October. Jeff Suppan?s 0-4 lifetime record (8.16 ERA) tells us to play against him at all costs. You?ll want to be just as adamant when Pedro Martinez gets the call. He?s got a 1.85 ERA in 73 innings and a .207 BAA this year and is 6-0 vs. Seattle the last three plus years with a 0.94 ERA and a .159 BAA in 48 innings. BEST BET: Martinez/Mariners vs. Suppan

San Francisco Schmidt is 10-1 (+$1000) when his team is off 3 or more consecutive losses.

Florida Willis is 6-1 (+$500) when his team is off a win.

Oakland Hudson is 13-2 (+$900) in August games.

Boston Martinez is 9-0 (+$900) when starting against Seattle with an ERA of 0.86.

Thanks for the posts Raymond, gl today.

Royals are starting to pack it in, not from an effort standpoint. They just don't have the pitching to hang in there.

Pena should get some votes for manager of the year I hope. He seems to be a class act who stays in the trenches with his players.
