iowa st +3.5 state goes to 5-0 on the road
north carolina -10 blowout
Obviously, the Tar Heels great demise has been exaggerated because this team is filled with talented freshmen who can play. Since a pre-Chrsitmas meltdown at Southern Cal, the Heels are on runs of 4-0 SU and 3-0 ATS.
That doesn't mean they've played great each time out, though. In this week's win at Virginia Tech, the young Heels had an astonishing 25 turnovers. Yes, they made enough plays to escape with the win, but Coach Roy Williams was none too pleased with Carolina's sloppy ball-handling. Look for UNC to put a premium on protecting the basketball this afternoon.
North Carolina should be able to control things in the paint and own the boards, much like they've done in most every game this season. Freshman center Tyler Hansbrough (17.1 ppg, 7.2 rpg) is very physical and has great touch.
Miami coach Frank Haith called Carolina "the best transition team in the country.'' And they very well could be. Just asked N.C. State, which built up an early double digit lead last Saturday at the Dean Dome, only to be run out of the building in a 13-point loss. And that's a good a Wolfpack squad.
Carolina likes to pour it on in the second half. It shot 60.9 percent in the second half versus N.C. State and 62.5 percent in the game's final 20 minutes at Virginia Tech. That's the result of easy baskets inside as well as in transition.
Miami can't afford to get a tarck meet today, but they haven't showed the ability to slow the Heels down in Chapel Hill. Last year, the Canes were blown out by 20, the year before 25 at the Dean Dome. Oh, and these youngsters from Carolina have shown they know how to protect their home court this year (8-1 SU and 5-2 ATS).
Meanwhile, Miami is on the road for the first time in a month and is 0-3 SU/ATS outside of South Florida with double digit losses at Temple (17), Michigan (21) and N.C. State (12). The Canes do have talent in the backcourt and Guillermo Diaz is capable of ringing up a big number on anybody.
But the Canes are allowing conference opponents to make 50 percent of their shots this season and this UNC team can shoot. Especially inside near the basket, where the Heels have the advantage. Miami will hang around for a while, but Carolina will flex its muscle and pull away for an 18-to-22 point win.
