No time today for any write ups..but capped late into the nite...am coaching my granddaughters YMCA team this morning and then this afternoon going to see La Laf-vs Texas St ..
A lot of games..am up +21 *'s in the last 2 nites...many times on Saturdays I lose those positive boxes because there are so many games and I get stupid..so tread lightly today..

Iona pulled one out at the last minute...Seaborn didn't start but he played..think he had 9 pts...made a huge halftime Iona play and won big..but then Monmouth woke up and took the lead with under 2 minutes...but Iona won by 3...a win but way to close...

Hoosier203..Cash had 2 pts for Iona..unreal..I am your neighbor...worked at Rye Beach all thru HS and college...live across the state line..we used to steal lobster traps over in Greenwich and Stamford..on my buddies boat...

Marist...I was principal at a school whose daughter attended..her mother teaches at Marist,her husband refs HS games...season tickets right behind the score table row 1..

Armys football PA announcer and bsketball scorekeeper is a good friend of mine..he also officiates HS basketball games and many of mine..never got a home call in 20 years...also worked there at camps for 5 years...know many,many people..

Texas basketball Just buy a general admission ticket for $7...go up stairs..then after the 1st deadball they ask you to go downstairs and fill up the good seats... I walk down and sit in the 3rd or 4th row..the other nite sat in row 2 but at halftime went up to sit and bother doglover and his wife in row 30...

Texas St..$10 general admission..walk in and sit anywhere..no one is there.. I like sitting in row 3 or 4 behind the opposing teams bench..can hear all the plays..the other nite vs UL a few knuckle head students decided to to move next to me and started getting on a UL player...it was a little racial...a Tx St cheerleader waked over to
them and told them to end it..they did but I went over to the Tx St bench and sat behind Kasper the Tx coach..that was real entertainment after they blew a 10 point lead with under 2 minutes...he is old school and all his players fear him...total 100% control...

Playing a 1-3-1 defense this morning...I have 10 players.. 8 girls and 2 boys..the teams we play have the opposite 8 boys and 2 girls...my daughter drafted the team.. its my granddaughters girl scout troop..we lost last week 14-12.....so like UTA getting beat by La Laf we are on a comeback

Stealing lobster traps from a boat. Classic!
That's cool that you get to go to a a bunch of college games. I do the same. I attend games every week at the following schools: Yale (sit right behind the basket, on the floor...almost touching the baseline....I still call it Payne-Whitney and I've been to arenas all over the country, and in my opinion, nothing beats a game at Yale. I try to go to all seven conference home games each year.)
Fordham, another old classic. Usually go to eat on Arthur Ave. before the game.
Quinnipiac, so underrated. Hockey rink and basketball arena in the same building. Beautiful seating, facilities, and atmosphere (bad concession stand, though)
Iona...like a big high school gym, plenty of parking in the garage, but the worst line for that concession stand downstairs. They need a new set-up.
I used to go to a bunch of Fairfield games, when the Stags played on campus in Alumni Hall, and when they first moved to the Harbor in Bridgeport. But that novelty wore off quickly, and, while the arena itself is nice, the low attendance (not too many Fairfield U type kids are driving to Bridgeport) makes for a lackluster atmosphere.
Sacred Heart, only when I'm bored stiff will I go to the SHUbox, or if a local kid is playing there. Parking is tough.
Columbia...gym reminds me of Iona's. I go infrequently, like when Yale has a big game there. It doesn't even feel like you're in Manhattan up there.
Manhattan College in Riverdale, The Bronx...I'll go to Draddy once or twice a year. I like the rivalry they have with Iona.
High school basketball in Fairfield County has been down the past few years. I used to go to more high school games than college, but now I go to more college games than high school. The big games up in the New Haven area have been much better than down here. ND of West Haven sold out every game last year in their bandbox with Tremont Waters (now a freshman at LSU)
Hartford area (into the traffic) is too far for me, but there are some good teams up there. The top teams in the state are mostly Catholic schools now. State playoffs have changed for this year, using four different divisions, or tiers, based on recent success, as well as enrollment. For example, Trinity Catholic, despite having one of the smallest enrollments in the state, is in Division 1. The D-1 tournament is going to be awesome this year. Even the first and second round games are going to be highly competitive. Also, I think every D1 team qualifies for the states, even if you go 0-20. Not like that in the other divisions. Still have to win 8 games (or 40%) of your games, to make the states. Personally, I'd rather the Catholic schools have their own league and playoffs. That's the age-old discussion in Connecticut.
When did you move to Texas? Or are you just visiting?

YMCA..lost 14-6...damn..my 1-3-1 didn't work...going man/man next week...smax the line was +20 for my team of Girl scouts..we played the boy scouts...10 boys and 2 girls vs my 9 girls and 2 boys...at the age of 9 the boys are so much more developed and bigger and stronger...no excuses though...we missed about 20 shots in the paint...and we were dribbling.stopping and pivoting..the other team walked with the ball 99 % of the time..but its the YMCA and the spirit of the game...so I kept my mouth shut...
Hawkeye,I never yell at the refs...played many games in HS.... got 2 techs...one wasn;t mine..the guy behind me yelled something..the other was for saying " C'mon Bob"...." don't ever call me by my 1st name out there,shows no respect".. WTF...in the lockeroom after the game when he was finishing his shower I let him have it...it was an exceptional senior game{ all star players}..I saw a possible fight about to "brew:...start...he blew me off and the opposing kid took a swing at my player...

I graduated for the same high school as Calvin Murphy....Norwalk High School. Calvin went on to star at Niagara.
My dad is friends with a guy named Howie Garfinkel. Howie is considered one of the best evaluators of high school basketball talent who ever lived. To this day, Howie says that Calvin Murphy is the greatest high school basketball player he's ever seen. Number two he said was Lou Alcindor.

Howard Garfinkel lived basketball, and his impact on the game ran deep

He wasn?t urbane, but he had the flair of a slick, seasoned promoter. When the campers gathered to hear a lecture, Garf would embarrass the speaker with an over-the-top introduction. Day after summer day, he walked around his camps, puffing cigarettes and snapping photos. When Five Star celebrated its 50-year anniversary, the camp posted around 14,000 pictures on its website. A who?s who played at Five Star: Jordan, Moses, Isiah, Patrick, ?Nique, Alonzo. Ask Garf who the best player he ever saw was, and he replied, ?Calvin Murphy!? every time. (Murphy was not a Five-Star camper, but he did speak there later in life.)

Yes, about a decade ago, five of us went to a Fordham game. On the way down there my pops told the four of us that Howard G. thinks that Calvin was the best high school player he's ever seen. I had heard the story a lot, but the other three guys didn't believe it. They all personally knew Calvin, but had a hard time believing somebody like Howard would say Calvin was #1.
So, we enter Rose Hill Gym that night, and who do we see? Howard Garfinkel. My pops asks him the question, and Howie says "Calvin Murphy, Norwalk, Connecticut." He did it without even batting an eyelash. Then he says "Lew Alcindor number 2."
A few years ago, Dick Vitale was taking about Howie during a game on t.v. He said the same thing about Garfinkel, although he didn't know if he ranked Calvin ahead of Alcindor, or Alcindor ahead of Calvin.
Old school..thanks for sharing the quote and story from Seth davis. I hadn't seen that before.
Fun fact: Calvin Murphy scored I think 55 points against Syracuse one night. His high school and college days were before I was born, but the stories I've heard about him are legendary; how he would single-handidly break presses and was in comfortable shooting range once he took a step past halfcourt. In the NBA, at one time, I think he either had the record for most made free throws in a row (at that time) or the highest single-season free throw %.
Another fun fact: Calvin Murphy is also an accomplished baton twirler. A few years ago, he came back to Norwalk to lead the Memorial Day parade. What a show he put on with the baton.
