No personal write up...just some game notes.
GAME NOTES: A set of schools with winning streaks tangle in New Jersey this Saturday, as the Navy Midshipmen take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in non- conference action. The Mids enter the game on a major roll, as they have won four straight games for the just the third time in 25 years. The four game win streak came on the heels of two straight losses to open the season, leaving Navy with a 4-2 record. Last weekend, the Mids posted their most impressive win of the season with a 41-9 triumph over Rice. As for the Knights, they come into the tilt on a roll of their own, winning two games in a row and five of their last six overall. Last weekend, the Knights concluded a perfect two-game road swing with a narrow 26-24 victory over Connecticut. The win improved the team to 5-2 overall and marked the first-ever time that Rutgers has won back- to-back Big East road games. In terms of the all-time series between the two schools, Navy owns a 10-8-1 edge over Rutgers, including a 54-21 victory last year in Annapolis.
The Mids run an option style attack on the offensive side of things and that helps explain why they are rushing for an impressive 272.7 ypg, but passing for just 144.2 ypg. The ground game has been so effective this season that Navy is averaging a healthy 31.3 ppg behind it. Last weekend the Mids' offense was in perfect form, rushing for 301 yards and five touchdowns en route to a commanding 41-9 victory over Rice. Matt Hall led the way with 91 yards and a pair of scores on six carries. He currently ranks second on the team in rushing with 329 yards to go along with five touchdowns. Ahead of him is signal caller Lamar Owens, who has rushed for 463 yards and two touchdowns. Owens however, has struggled a bit when having to throw the ball, as he has been intercepted six times with only three interceptions. Still, his legs are what makes him so dangerous and he is one of six players on the roster that has rushed for a 100 yards on the season.
Defensively, the Mids have done a decent job this season, although they have forced just 10 turnovers. Still, the unit is allowing its opponents just 24.8 ppg behind 358.8 total ypg. Last weekend, the Mids' defense was at its best, holding Rice to a mere 284 total yards, while forcing six sacks and two turnovers. The defense however, did allow 190 yards on the ground which is not that big of a surprise considering Navy is giving up 175.3 rushing ypg this season. Rob Caldwell posted 10 stops in the victory over Rice, while David Mahoney added nine stops, a fumble recovery and a sack. Caldwell currently leads the team in tackles with 76 to go along with a pair of sacks and forced fumbles. As for Mahoney, he has been a force to be reckoned with and is tops on the club with 11 TFLs and six sacks.
Trailing 10-3 in the second half Rutgers' Ryan Hart replaced an injured Mike Teel and threw three touchdowns passes in leading the Knights to a 26-24 come from behind victory over UConn. In the process of perhaps getting his starting job back, Hart became Rutgers' all-time leader in touchdown passes with 45. Hart, who was the Knights starter for the first half of the season, has fared well thus far and has thrown for 1,086 yards and 11 touchdowns against three interceptions. He has performed much better than his counterpart Teel, who has thrown only two touchdowns with seven interceptions. Whomever is under center, they will surely be looking in the direction of Tres Moses, the team's leading wideout with 28 catches for 456 yards. Another weapon in the passing game is fullback Brian Leonard, who has reeled in 26 catches for 302 yards and four scores. He is also a threat to run the ball and ranks second on the team with 504 rushing yards to go along with five touchdowns. Ahead of him is true freshman Ray Rice, who ran for 217 yards on 27 carries last weekend. It was the fourth-highest rushing total in Rutgers history. The effort also accounted for nearly half of Rice's team-high 542 rushing yards this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Knights have really improved from years past and are currently giving up just 18.7 ppg behind only 347.9 total ypg. The unit has been especially tough against the run, allowing only 113.9 ypg on the ground. Another area Rutgers has excelled in is getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks, as it has posted an impressive 29 sacks thus far. Last weekend, the Knights' defense put together another solid effort and limited UConn to just 293 total yards, while recording four sacks. Although he was held without a sack last weekend, Ryan Neill has specialized in getting to opposing quarterbacks and leads the Knights with six sacks. He is also top on the club with 17 TFLs and 16 QBHs to go along with 41 stops.
I like Navy +6.5 in this game...they should be able to run all day long.I will not bet them on the money line, but i would not be phased if they won this ball game SU.
