first big saturday of college football. i'll take it slowly at first, but do have a couple of plays and opinions today:

usc -3-: i see a whole lot of esteemed opinions on the commodores today but i just don't get it. understand, i start from a position of having a lot of respect for lou holtz as a coach, and i think he's going to try to make a statement today. gamescocks are off a disasterous last season, finishing 5-7 after better expectations, low point being a serious ass whuppin' by clemson, the worst loss in holtz's 33 year career. i'm acquanted with a few gamecock boosters, and i can assure you they were attentive. yet they didn't flinch, and lou got a five year contract extension. lou, however, fired about half of his asst coaches, and began making the rounds talking about changing a "culture of losing." ol' lou's no fool, and he wouldn't be preaching unless he thought he might have something. it's no coincidence that the 'cocks are pretty loaded this year, at least with the best talent that they've had during the holtz tenure. they're also healthy and very deep, obliquely illustrrated by the fact that lou's carryiing five kicking specialists on his travel roster. now that's a coach that's not worried about depth.

i keep seeing a lot of reference to two facts about the commodores. the first is all their returning starters. if memory serves, these are the same starters that faded out and lost last year's home opener to an ole miss team with eli manning and no defense. after that, they folded up like a cheap suit in a series of sec waxings. i'd be more impressed with some new starters.

i've also seen some favorable refences to their record in openers, but when i look at the last six years, i see this - two slaughters in road openers; at home, last year's collapse to ole miss, a loss to mtsu, a loss to mia ohio, and an 11 point loss to alabama as a 14 point dog. impress me not.

it's just not a good day to be vandy. watch out for lou today, he'll have a few surprises, i can almost guarantee it.

w va -28-: hate to say it, but i think the pirates are road kill today. don't really know a lot about the mountaneers. i kow they have a good coach, momentum from last season, and enough talent to be picked preseason top 10. what i know about ecu is not pretty. it's hard to see how they're much impoved over last year's 1-11 team. last year's only strong suit was their offensive line, and they lost all but one starter. he's been nursing a broken wrist all summer, and wasn't starting until this week. they have numerous other injuriies across they board and very little depth. it's really hard to see how they're going to score today - i see ugly early.

also like troy/marshall under 47, thinking of teasing navy and miss st.
