North Carolina looks like an underrated team in my estimation. The Tarheels return 15 starters from last year?s team that managed a 6-6 record despite facing the toughest schedule in the nation. North Carolina was 1.0 yards per play better than average offensively (5.9 yppl against teams that would combine to allow just 4.9 yppl to an average offense) and their defense wasn?t as bad as it looked, allowing 6.3 yppl to teams that would have averaged 5.9 yppl against an average defense. Their overall +0.6 yppl rating from the line of scrimmage wasn?t that much worse than Georgia Tech?s overall rating last season of +0.9 yppl (-0.1 yppl on offense and +1.0 yppl on defense). That difference was made up for by North Carolina?s special teams, which rated at 2.5 points better than average last season (compared to Georgia Tech?s -2.0 ST rating). Many expect North Carolina to be worse this season without 4 year starting quarterback Darian Durant, but senior Matt Baker has posted good numbers the last 2 years as a backup (8.3 yards per pass play on 57 pass plays, against teams that would allow just 5.5 yppp to an average quarterback). I think Baker will perform at least as well as Durant did throwing the football and Durant?s running ability was overblown seeing as he averaged just 4.4 yards per rushing play last season (taking out his sacks). North Carolina has an improved offensive line and good running backs to take the place of Scott, Lewis, and McGill, so I only see a minor drop, if any, from the Tarheels? attack this season. North Carolina?s defense should be considerably better this season with a fortified defensive line to go with 6 returning starters in the back 7. I still rate the Tarheels defense at 0.2 yppl worse than average, but there is potential for them to be better than average on that side of the ball. Georgia Tech is coming off an upset win at Auburn, but the Yellow Jackets were out-gained 4.4 yppl to 5.9 yppl for Auburn (taking out G. Tech?s 3 kneel downs for -5 yards, of course). Georgia Tech didn?t so much win that game as much as Auburn lost it by turning the ball over 5 times to just 1 turnover for the Yellow Jackets. That victory seems to have Georgia Tech overrated heading into this game while NCU is probably underrated.Yellow Jackets are only 1-6 ATS as a double-digit favorite under coach Chan Gailey.

Let`s give the Tarheels a shot to cover this number ......

ADDING AN EARLY GAME TOTAL....

CLEMSON-MARYLAND....12:00 EST START

As expected, having lost offensive weapons Suter, Novak, and Allen from the 2004 squad, MD struggled to score points last week (23-20) against Navy. Despite a 50 pound per man weight advantage in favor of the MD OLine, MD could muster only a single FG in each of the first 3 quarters. In the 4th Q MD did wear down Navy. Even then, MD needed a 4th and 7 conversion to keep its final drive alive. A Navy defender missed the behind-the-line tackle that would have given Navy the victory.

The MD defense had some trouble with the Navy option to start the game. Navy managed 80 and 50 yd drives on their first 2 possessions to go up 14-0. That was pretty much it until the 4th Q when Navy mounted a desperation 80 yard TD drive.

Clemson's offense managed only 6 FG's against Tex A&M. Their only TD came from a punt return. Clemson ran 51 times with only 23 passes. Last year MD and Clem played a 10-7 game, Clem won. Expect a similar score this year. The Under is a viable play.

*These 2 teams have played under the total in 9 of there last 10 meetings*

I love the Longhorns tonight, have had my wager
in for a few days now.

Texas has one of the nation?s best offensive teams, led by the most dynamic quarterback in the nation in Vince Young, who can beat you in so many different ways that it?s unfair. Texas was 1.1 yards per play better than average offensively last season (6.4 yppl against teams that would allow 5.3 yppl to an average offense) and they should be better this season as Young continues to develop as a passer. And, I also don?t think the loss of RB Cedric Benson won`t have any affect on the rushing numbers since the Longhorns have plenty of talented backs and return 4 of their 5 starters on the offensive line. They rate the Longhorns? offense at 1.3 yppl better than average this season. The Buckeyes return 9 starters to a defense that was 0.9 yppl better than average last season despite being inexperienced as a unit (just 4 returning starters last season). Ohio State dominated a better than average Miami Ohio offense last week, as Redhawks couldn?t score until the Buckeyes reserves took the field in the 4th quarter. Ohio State does not have a great offense, even with Smith at quarterback, rating that unit at 0.4 yppl better than average, which puts the Buckeyes? attack at a big disadvantage against a Texas stop unit that I rate at 0.9 yppl better than average. While Texas does have an overall advantage from the line of scrimmage, the Buckeyes have the home field advantage, but Texas applies to a very strong 56-15-1 ATS momentum situation and a 52-18-1 ATS game 2 angle. Ohio State does apply to a decent 42-19 ATS game 2 situation, but the angles combine to favor Texas by a few points.

So we will go with the #2 team in the country
