McLaren Undergoes Wrist Surgery

BOSTON (December 28, 2001) - Boston Bruins defenseman Kyle McLaren will be out of the lineup for approximately ten-to twelve weeks following surgery this morning to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist, it was announced today by Bruins General Manager Mike O'Connell. Dr. James Herndon performed the surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The doctor told me this morning that the surgery went very well," said O'Connell. "Kyle will be in a long-arm cast for three weeks and a short-arm cast for another three weeks. That will be followed by approximately four-to-six weeks of rehabilitation to regain strength in the wrist before he can return to the lineup."

McLaren, 24, suffered the injury in Boston's 4-2 win at the NY Islanders on December 22nd. He has played in 22 games with the Bruins this season with six assists and nine penalty minutes in those contests. He missed 13 games to injuries prior to this wrist injury, missing 12 games (Oct. 10-Nov. 6) after suffering a torn pectoralis (chest) muscle and one game (Nov. 20) with a knee bruise.

McLaren is in his seventh NHL season since Boston made him their first pick, ninth overall, in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He has career NHL/Bruins scoring totals to date of 34 goals and 88 assists for 122 points with 360 penalty minutes in 401 career games.
