the first weekend of fall, and a full slate of games. how can you not love this time of year?
michigan (+3) 1 unit. nothing new here. michigan has beaten penn state 8 straight times, including the home-job clockwork that gave the wolverines an extra play 2 years ago, costing penn state a perfect season. not that i'm still bitter about that or anything. anyways, these nittany lions are certainly not the 10th best team in the country. they haven't looked as good as i'd hoped, and until they prove they can get this monkey off their back, i have to take michigan and the points.
georgia tech/virginia under (40.5) 2 units. matt ryan showed what a good qb can do against gt's aggressive defense. virginia does not have a good qb. bennett is an upgrade over ball for gt, but they are still going with a very conservative game plan, controlling the game with tashard choice. he'll enjoy a lot more running room than he did last week. normally i'd also take any points i'm getting from a chan gailey-coached team, but i can't trust the cavs.
east carolina (+24.5) 1 unit.
ecu/wv under ((59) 1 unit. the score between these 2 the last 2 years: 27-10 (the game was 17-10 early in the 4th quarter) and 20-15. ecu held wvu to 153 & 81 rushing yards in those 2 games. that's pretty damn good.
maryland (+3) 1 unit
maryland/wf under (42) 1 unit. the dog in wf games was 11-0-1* last year and 2-1 so far this year. i think skinner is back at qb for wake, which will certainly help the demon deacons, but they normally stick with a very conservative game plan. i can't imagine that will change with a qb returning from a separated shoulder. i don't see either team putting up many points, and it will come down to the last possession.
*does not include the bowl game, as i do not remember if they covered against louisville.
lsu (-18) 2 units. why are people still fawning over steve spurrier? because of the offensive dominance of the gamecocks? they are 67th in total offense (77th in passing offense) in the country. 2 of their 3 games were against ul lafayette and south carolina state. i look for another dominant performance by the tigers.
iowa (+7.5) 1 unit. ok, the loss to iowa st really bothers me. but the hawkeyes have still only given up 18 points (all field goals) in 3 games. i'm hardly sold on wisconsin being a top-10 team. they were tied at halftime at home against the citadel, for crying out loud.
