the scholarship is only for $250, so obviously they are making a statement about affirmative action.

Sunday, February 15, 2004

BRISTOL, R.I. ? A student group at Roger Williams University (search) is offering a new scholarship for which only white students are eligible, a move they say is designed to protest affirmative action (search).

The application for the $250 award requires an essay on "why you are proud of your white heritage" and a recent picture to "confirm whiteness."

"Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants," says the application, issued by the university's College Republicans.

Jason Mattera, 20, who is president of the College Republicans, said the group is parodying minority scholarships.

"We think that if you want to treat someone according to character and how well they achieve academically, then skin color shouldn't really be an option," he said. "Many people think that coming from a white background you're automatically privileged, you're automatically rich and your parents pay full tuition. That's just not the case."

The stunt has angered some at the university, but the administration is staying out of the fray. The school's provost said it is a student group's initiative and is not endorsed by Roger Williams (search).

Mattera, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is himself a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship open only to a minority group.

"No matter what my ethnicity is, I'm making a statement that scholarships should be given out based on merit and need," Mattera told the Providence Journal.

His group took out a full-page ad in last week's issue of the university's student newspaper to tout the scholarship, which was for $50 until two donors came forward to add $100 each during the weekend, Mattera said.

It's not the first brush with controversy for the group. The school temporarily froze the Republicans' money in the fall during a fight over a series of articles published in its monthly newsletter. One article alleged that a gay-rights group indoctrinates students into homosexual sex.

Being a minority, it's kind of ironic that I'm agreeing with the young Republican's attempt at making a radical statement. If we, minorities, are able to gain an edge over our caucasian counterparts just because of our skin color over our merit, then they should have the same rights...

A bunch of us in school have talked about funding a dental scholarship here at UNC when we graduate for white middle-upper class male students only. Falling in that category because I supposedly "have had all of the advantages", i will end school in more debt than any other demographic even though i am in the top 10% of my class. affirmative action and all scholarships going to minorities is a crock of shit.

Love seeing american white males whining that they just don't get enough breaks. They're acting like women.

Saint, you're not an in-stater?

Yeah, I am instate. My tuition, however, has just about doubled since I started. In addition, in dds school i pay about 5 grand/year just for fees for all of the materials i use every day on patients which is very expensive. UNC in general has this thing about being the top public university, so it feels the need to keep pace with michigan and cal berk. For example, professors have been whining because they make less money than professors at those 2 schools I just mentioned. Well guess what...the freaking cost of living in cali and michigan is a bit more than in north carolina. But no one in charge has half a brain to take that into consideration. I wouldn't wish my worst enemy to sit in the chair for 2 hours with some of these kids. They are so behind and incapable it's mind boggling (this goes for some of the women in my class...im not sexist, just saying as a state school they needed to admit to quota and some of these people will make horrible dentists).

The best part is, out of 80 students in my class, there are about 15 or so minorities. I'd say, they probably get 85% of the scholarships, none of which are based on merit. The ironic part is, these students for the most part weren't even competitive in applications, they got in because of race. The state rationalizes it by saying NC has a huge underserved population which has most of the problems w/ their teeth. So let in more blacks who are underqualified to dental school. Well, that sounds nice and everything, but the FACT is that once these kids graduate, they aren't headed to the areas they grew up. They are headed to white upper class suberbia so they can make their change. Makes me sick.

I don't want a BREAK. I want to be REWARDED for busting my ass 40 hours a week at school, and then another 20 on top of it at home studying so I can be in the top 5% of my class. Instead, it's the minorites who are handed it based on race, instead of merit.

My point is that you've never come close to paying for the value of your education. It's been subsidized through the taxpayers of your state. So your problem isn't so much that there are entitlements, it's just that you're not receiving enough of them. 80 kids in your class, 15 being minorities and you then state that the admission policies just aren't fair. You've got to see how funny that may be to the outside reader.

Seeing you and freeze bitching about tuition hikes when you both go to state funded universities and then bitch in other threads about the problem with the US being that too many people think that they are entitled to something. Again, you have to see how funny that would be to an outside reader.

This is pretty similar to me bitching when I didn't get a car from my Mommy after I graduated like my three sisters did. What a feminist bitch.

It shouldn't sound funny to an outside reader when I say there are 15 minorities out of 80 (as if me complaining about such a small number is ironic). I could care less how many qualified minorities are in our class. If there were 60 of them who were qualified and held to the same admissions standards, then fine. But out of those 15, maybe 5 of them would have gained admissions without lower standards. And at this point, a professional education, haven't they been handed enough? At what point do we as a whole say, "ok, things are even playing field now, you're on your own". I would have thought that at this level i wouldn't have to deal with the "equality" bullshit.

And as far as the state and country funding my education. I will MORE than make up for my share of loans when I am paying 35% taxes for 25 years of work, not to mention providing preventative healthcare services to the state of North Carolina which in the end will lower their spending on healthcare as far as dentistry is concerned through prevention.

35% of tax? to the state? I thought Illinois had it high at 3%.

Well if you?re going to be paying it all back, then I guess that it?s ok that you?re freeloading for a while. I can?t believe that they force you to stay in-state after graduation ? it sounds unconstitutional. And one question on your minority brethren ? Are they not also required to pay the same taxes that you are? By your line of thinking, it?s really not a scholarship, then, as much as it is a loan.

Thanks for clearing this up and good luck in your studies!!

I agree as well. Imagine the heat the white race would take if they came out with NAAWP instead of NAACP or we watched W.E.T. instead of BET.

Nothing wrong with that and I am not prejudice at all.

C'mon man...All this bullshite about affirmative action is crap...I busted my azz through school and so should everyone else. It's not fair to get hand me downs and someone gets credit for shite that they did not earn. Not to sound racist, but the majority of Asians don't need hand outs...we earn everything we work for...best of luck saint with your pursuit of higher education...

Yeah, i'm quite sure that all these unfit minorites (as deemed by Saint) don't work hard. I've heard that not only do they get a full ride, they don't even have to attend classes. On top of that, they are given a school subsidized job paying 20 bucks an hour for doing nothing. Since they don't actually go to classes, they have all the time in the world to work(such that it is-lazy bastards), so not only are minorities not saddled with massive debt after they graduate, like all caucasions are, they actually have a nice bank account built up. They call them 'two day Tyrones' because they only have to show up on registration day and then again on graduation day. Once they check the 'african-american' box on the application, it's smooooth sailing. And don't even get me started on *female* minorities. Some people have all the luck.

I am a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder. One of the most liberal places in the US. I belong to the College Republicans here and we have recently done two parodys. Our first was conservative coming out day, an obvious paraody on gay coming out day. It was hilarious. Our next was an affirmative action bake sale. This caused a lot of media to come to the school and really pissed off the liberals and other diversity thugs. We sold cookies to whites and asians (an over represented minority in the college system) for $1, latinos .50, blacks .25 and if you're a minorty so pigeon holed you got them free. The school tried to shut us down and we threatened a federal lawsuit and they let it go on as long as we didn't sell, but request donations (under the 1964 civil rights act, you can't base prices on race). The bake sale lasted about two minutes and the arguments and protests lasted for days! It was great. Next we'r planning to roast a pig in front of our main library on earth day.
