Very sad, and if any games go to 5 this weekend, I suspect they will get smoked by the San Diego vs Pittsburgh game NBC has on Sunday Night.

Suprised to see that game 1 of Mets vs Dodgers did not get a primetime slot, I realize that the Mets are the 2nd draw in NY and Detroit has some good history, but getting both the NY and LA markets involved is an attraction. Guess that is why I am not a tv exec.

Why have the numbers dropped, hmmmmmmmmm I think there is a correlation between the ratings and the evil empires payroll. Yankees are bad for baseball. Great $210 million they spent this year, what did they get one more win than the twins? Try to buy the championship gets to be old. Total shame the rest of the country doesn't get to see the twins in prime time for one of these first two games, they have earned it. Twins fans will show up and watch it but other baseball fans won't be taking off work to watch it.

While I am dogging the evil empire, Jeters numbers are no where near Morneau numbers, I would take a 325 ave with 130 rbi's and 35 home runs over a 345 average 90 rbi's and 15 home runs any day. As far as defense, Jeter is an average shortstop. This is about the most valuable player not the hall of fame or life time acheivement. Once again an east coast bias!!

Maybe they could get the other team that irrates the hell out of me to play the Yankees on national tv Notre Dame!!

I do think you bring up an interesting point -- how the overexposure of the Yankees (and the Red Sox to some extent) is ruining the sport. I think the NFL is thriving because every team has loyal and rabid fans, majority of the fan bases are very comitted, and finances are not the dominant factor as to who wins. Talent, drafting and superior management is what wins year after year.

But in the age of the internet and ESPN, I really wonder how many kids are growing up to be diehard Royal or Pirate fans? Things are only going to get worse while the small market fan bases become less and less.

Baseball doesn't get it. In the NFL you will see different teams win based on how they manage the salary cap, draft and evaluate talent. How much you spend doesn't matter they all have the same amount. You will see a team like Green Bay or Kansas City win the superbowl.

I think New England is the model other teams are following in the nfl. They don't really have any super stars other than Brady. Minnesota went that direction and dumped Moss and Culpper, not for a few draft picks but to free up money. They divided it up into places liek the offensive line and the defense. Long term I think their chances for success are higher.

Baseball needs to have a salary cap where all the teams have the same amount. Then you will see the small market teams like Kansas City and Milwaukee have a chance. Unfortuately for the American league the two small market teams meet in the first round. Wow and guess what they don't get the prime time games. I hope the Yankee ratings suck!!!!!!!!!

You are correct about Yankees- and the Mets, Red Sox, etc.- are bad for baseball. But you shouldn't blame the empire for that. They are playing within the rules. MLB is the problem, and that is where your anger should be aimed. Honestly, who wouldn't want a George Steinbrenner as the owner of your team. I'd certainly take him over David Glass. GL.

Agree 100%, it's the systems problem not the big market teams (and trust me I'm a Yankee hater).

Basically its a huge poker game, the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and Angels are always the big stacks. Sure they'll get busted sometimes, but they'll always be around to play some more.

Baseball owners have no balls, just lock them out until they agree to a salary cap. Simple. Where else are they going to make a million a year? If the lock out last one or two years then so be it. Yankees are the main problem when their payroll is 40% higher than the next closest competitor their is a problem. Screw the evil empire.

I have said this before, let's just say Bill Gates bouth the Mariners and said I basically want the all star team, if the Yankees offer $20 million a year I offer you $40 million, and they won 130 games a year. Would this be good for baseball? That is on the line of what the Yankees do but to a lesser extent. George anit too good spending his money, Twins won one less game and it cost them $130 million less.
