Know that many will be keen on Sigel this week...should have a considerable advantage...won state c'ship twice here, and was club champ 10 times running before retiring to let others win.

Hills go 125/1 five places

Outright plays (2 units):

Craig Stadler to win 20/1 e.w. @ Stan James
Stadler makes his debut on the Tour this week amid much anticipation and the books have priced him up accordingly as 2nd or 3rd favourite in most instances. Stan James are one exception and this does look a large price. His unfamiliarity with the course will not be a problem and it may even be an advantage that his first event will be a Senior major - there will be no false expectations this week at least. If he is good enough to finish in the top-20 in last year's U.S. Open, then he is certainly good enough to win in this company.

Larry Nelson to win 20/1 e.w. @ Bet365, SkyBet, BetInternet, Paddy Power and Stan James
Nelson already has a distinguished Champions Tour career, but he has shown this season that it is hardly in its twilight years. He has done everything but win this year - three runners-up spots in twelve starts and a 3rd place finish last week. He is also top in four of the Tour's stat categories, including All-Round Ranking, and 2nd in two others including Scoring Average. He will fancy his chances in the Farmers Charity Classic in two weeks time, but that long overdue win could also come this week. He won't be far from the leaderboard.

Des Smyth to win 25/1 e.w. @ BetInternet and Stan James
Persevering with the Irishman who is another who has threatened to win several times this season, but has fallen short. He has six top-10 finishes from eleven starts this season. He took himself out of contention with a poor opening round last week, but his form had been very good in the run-up to that event. The use of a new course should work in his favour and it is only a matter of when, not if, he will win his first Seniors Tour event.

A rare 3-ball bet for me

Irwin 5/6 v Nicklaus, LWankins (not a typo)

Although I think Nicklaus should be shorter than the 80/1 outright that he is with Hills, surely he wont be able to live with Irwin, who plays week in, week out..8/15 at 365

Poor house beckons if he gets turned over!

Matchup plays (2 units):

Bobby Wadkins to beat Seiji Ebihara -111 @ BetandWin
Siding with the more consistent player - Wadkins has finished no worse than 35th in the last seven events, whereas Ebihara has done three times in his last five starts - who has the far better greens in regulation stats. With poor GIR stats, Ebihara should struggle in a major and against a player who finished 2nd in this event last year.

Hubert Green to beat Ed Fiori -111 @ BetandWin
Siding with the Tour veteran who secured his fifth top-10 finish of the season in his last outing. Fiori will be playing his fifth Champions Tour event this week, but has yet to break into the top-15. Won't be any easier this week.

Tom Watson to beat Tom Kite -111 @ Paddy Power and SIA
Two top-10 finishes from twelve starts is hardly title-winning form and it is hard to see Kite as a serious contender this week. Watson is much more selective in his events and is still competitive. He has yet to win in seven starts this year, but he has finished 2nd on two occasions and should finish in the top-10 at least.

R Post tips Lietzke and Watson...

Always look to throw an injury doubt on your plays, Stan!

Quite serious though, Green diagnosed with throat cancer...good luck to him, hope he can get it beat.

Never forget my first senior tour winner, Larry Gilbert (66/1)...couple of years later he was gone...

Between Green Bay and Iowa City
NBC golf analyst Mark Rolfing is as good as any and better than most in describing and anticipating the action (the deal was sealed on my biggest golf wager of the year when he confirmed my thinking without hesitation or equivocation after 36 holes of The Players Championship with his opinion that Davis Love would be awfully tough to beat). His take:

(1) The rough is thick and wet, the course is playing long, and driving will be at a premium.

(2) The layout seems a perfect fit for Tom Watson, his mudder reputation being built as much as anything on a swing that sweeps the ball off the slop rather than digs after it.

(3) Clive: Gary Koch played a practice round with Craig Stadler on Monday and afterwards told Rolfing that Stadler's back is fine. Stadler tweaked it a couple of weeks ago on a long flight while returning from a hunting trip to Argentina, and he probably could have played last week, but his focus was on being ready for this week.

OUTRIGHTS:

Larry Nelson(22/1) for 0.70* e.w. @ 5 dimes
I find the seniors as volatile as any group of players when it comes to a quick yo-yo from sterling to clunker and back again, but I think Mr. Nelson's game is taking form for a 72 hole test in pursuit of a coveted title on a long and sloppy track.

Tom Watson(12/1) for 0.60* e.w. @ Bet365
Both Watson and Nicklaus have observed that playing to the middle of the greens leaves you with a lot of favorable uphill putts, reflecting the re-design influence of Robert Trent Jones from years ago (and it's consistent with Jay Sigel's advice to not miss greens on the short side). That tactic seems sound in strategy and execution, and I see favorable opportunities from both the well struck and the mishit shots that follow. For added flavor to start the week, caddie Bruce Edwards was feted to throwing out the first pitch at the Seattle vs. Philadelphia baseball game on Wednesday with a large contingent of his peers on hand.

Craig Stadler(16/1) for 0.50* e.w. @ 5 dimes
All the game and all the seasoning required to make his debut in a big way.

Jay Sigel(66/1) for 0.50* e.w. @ 5 dimes
He literally owns the place, although he claims he has not played the fully revamped course more than a few times.

Ed Dougherty(80/1) for 0.50* e.w. @ Bet365
Philadelphia proud, peaking nicely, and although I don't think of him as a mudder (the forecast is decent), at his best he is geared to grinding for an extra day over a demanding track.

MATCHUPS:

PARLAY: Watson(+140) over Irwin WITH Nelson(-112) over Morgan for 1* @ 5 dimes @ 3.54/1

Thanks for the update Clive - I don't make injury a big factor in my capping, but that looks a serious one.

Let's hope he shows the same resolve against adversity that he showed when winning the 1977 U.S. Open under a death threat.

At least one other player in the field has recently recovered from cancer (Ray Floyd) so he is not alone.

and Jim Colbert, Palmer

this spectre is something that I guess is unique to senior tour, although there are a few exceptions, Azinger, and more recently Colleen Walker on LPGA.

Thanks for the info LIA, all very useful stuff

And they, like Floyd, contracted prostrate cancer which is clearly going to be a big problem on this Tour because it is linked to age.

Throat cancer is another matter. I remember Bob Wynn overcoming throat cancer a couple of years ago on this Tour, so there are always precedents.

Thanks LIA, some nice info and weather is calling for more rain on weekend.

will throw in a 72 hole @ 5 Dimes
Watson over Irwin +140

If I am interpreting LIA correctly that rough ect is describing layout for beards and not pga I think Watson has good shot with conditions being similiar to last years Seniors US Open and Senior Tour Champ where he beat Irwin by 10 and 7 strokes respectively. I'll give it a look.

Clive Just read this :(

Eight-time Champions Tour winner Jay Sigel was not among the leaders, carding a 3-over 73. His mother, 87-year-old Betty Sigel, died in a Florida nursing home Wednesday after a long illness.

"It's a tough situation," Sigel said. "But it probably will be better tomorrow and again on Saturday. The toughest thing was making the decision on playing, not knowing whether it was right or wrong. It was the correct decision

2nd round update: 0-3-0; -10.10 units

Wadkins/Jacobs LOST by 3
Stadler/Kite LOST by 1
Fleisher/Quigley LOST by 1

Mid-point update:

Wadkins/Ebihara Trails by 2
Green/Fiori LOST by 3
Watson/Kite Trails by 6

Stadler 7th
Nelson 27th
Smyth 14th

Ugly day! Really thought I would get at least the double-play on Stadler today, but staring at 0-for-6 in the matchups and 18-holes at the moment. Nelson and Stadler have both held the lead in this tournament, so could really do with one of them being there again on Sunday evening.

3rd round plays (2 units):

Craig Stadler to beat Tom Kite -118 @ Five Dimes
Wayne Levi to beat John Jacobs -112 @ Five Dimes
Des Smyth to beat Doug Tewell -128 @ Five Dimes
