YTD: 3-2
Followed up a 2-0 Thursday with a 1-2 Saturday. Made a great call with ECU, a lousy call with ULL and, well, MSU played well enough to almost get the cover against Cal, but as I was watching I knew I had bet on the wrong team. Laid off yesterday's doubleheader because I knew I had a play going today.
Fresno +5 at Rutgers. Double Play.
I love the Big Fu Manchu, aka Pat Hill, head coach Fresno State Bulldogs. His teams dont back down from anyone and as a result they are always worth a look when they're catching points. Always take Fresno as an underdog in a non conference game. Its a rule. Pass it on. In the last 10 years, Fresno is 24-9-1 ATS as a dog in out of conference play. I always give the Bulldogs a serious look as a dog against any opponent, except Boise.
Beyond the technical angle, I just like the matchup in this one as well. Fresno has a team thats built to win on the road. Top shelf OL, a stable of backs to run hard behind it, a senior QB who had a 3 to 1 TD/INT ratio last year. This team can score fast or they can pound it slowly down the field. Their defense will give up yards, points and big plays, but I dont think Rutgers will be able to keep pace for four quarters.
Box-In-One mentioned it in his post and I'll reiterate: Rutgers is playing its first game without its face of the program, Ray Rice. And, they're rebuilding their OL. I dont think they come in as confident in what they know they can do in this contest as Fresno does. That intangible will be the difference.
Teel is a good QB and his two good targets to throw to, but Teel also has his moments where its one step forward, one step backwards as far as his on field play. Without Rice to milk yards, its hard not to see this game turning on a dime, the result of an ill advised Teel throw on third and long.
Basic question: Which roster is more talented? I say Fresno. And, they have a coach who nows how to use talent and motivate that talent. Rutgers might not be the Big BCS Giant that would make this a seminal upset. However, you can be sure that Hill has convinced his guys they're playing the New York Giants and that they willl win.
Why is this a Doube Play? Well, I'm going to try and put a little more on gamees I feel strongly about. We'll see how this experiment works. When I first saw these lines a month ago, I had two games circles right away: ECU and Fresno. I neglected to double up on ECU, but the Fresno game I had always thought was the stronger play. I think even before the lines came out I mentioned in someone's thread (Kramer's I believe) that I would be taking Fresno so long as they weren't chalk. So, there you go.
Good Luck!! :weed:
