hate to make this such a simple argument..but the bottom line is $...redsox fans have been hearing for years that ownership just does not have the revenue that other teams have...personally im sick of hearing that...

this ownership was not even the highest bidder for this team....that to me immediately raised a red flag....i am not bad mouthing the owners here..i think they have a pretty good vision as to were they see this team going and what they need to achive that...i do however think they have bought this team thinking they can be "competetive" and still make some $...

sorry..my opinion is dont buy a franchise if you are hoping to make money...especially the redsox...im sick of being competetive ..look at the franchises and backgrounds this ownership team has come from...it should not surprise anyone what has transpired here...what took the redsox over 2 months to try and finalize it took the Yanks only 3 PHUCKIN days...

simply a matter of ..being competetive vs . being the best..

this trade primarily helps the yanks from a marketing perspective ( they sold about 22,000 tickets yesterday, per the yes network) & from a defensive perspective.

i believe in due time a-rod will be an allstar 3rd baseman, because he has quick reflexes. jeter's reflexes are not as quick. defensively soriano was a liability at 2nd base. he got by on pure instincts.i heard one of the old time yanks(forgot who) likend soriano's defensive skill to that of mantle's when he got to the majors. that is why texas will put him in centerfield.

offensively, other than stikeouts, soriano is not that far behind a-rod. don't forget that texas home field is friendlier to right handed hitters more than yankee stadium, which is a tough hitter's park for right handed hitters (death valley).so i believe that a-rod's batting average & his extra base hits(doubles & triples) will rise, while his homerun totals will decrease. on the other hand soriano's homer production will increase, provided that he becomes more selective at the plate.

just a fyi, when the yanks inquired about schilling, arizona wanted both johnson & soriano. of course the yanks didn't think it was worth it for a 37 year old pitcher. instead, the yanks got vasquez & a-rod for those 2, which of course is a huge difference.

as far as hitting is concerned, i think that the yanks & red sox are about even & both teams need their starters to last the season. the yanks questions are brown, lieber, contras(sp?), & rivera. boston's questions are martinez & schilling since they both could break down & their hitters ortiz & mueller if they can duplicate last season's stats.

it will be interesting.

Spending the most money doesn't automatically give you a championship. Older Sox fans i'm sure would remember Yawkey's spending ways and it never got them anything. Then again, they are cursed so probably an irrelevant observation. :tongue
Contreras I think will end up the ace in due time. If Brown holds up, team should win 95-100. Playoffs of course anything can happen and great pitching WILL shut down a great offense in most cases.
