BRIAN GABRIELLE FULL FRIDAY CARD

Brian Gabrielle ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ref# 149722
GameDate: Friday, September 3, 2004 8:00 PM
Matchup: Washington St. Cougars vs New Mexico Lobos
Grade: Premium Play
Selection: Play on the Washington St. Cougars

Reason:
A lot of injuries on the Washington State sidelines, but truth be
told, early season travel games are the best spots to be taking a lot
of injuries, as it makes it an easy decision on who's going stay
behind. The fact is, the Cougars bring a well prepared and hungry
bunch to New Mexico in the season opener. They are feeding off a
season closing win over the Long Horns and get a familiar foe to
begin the new season. Remember, they pummelled the Lobos by double
digits in last season's opener as well. This is the first of 2
nationally televised games for the Lobos this season - not a good
spot for this team, who are 0-4 in previous appearances and dealing
with a lot of key grad casualties from their 8-5 season a year ago.
Gone are 14 starters, including 8 players who were named to the 1st
or 2nd all-conference teams in 2003. Six of the eight were defensive
players, including three defensive linemen. On offense the Lobos must
replace Casey Kelly, the winningest quarterback in school history. If
that's not enough of a challenge for the Lobos, hosting the
winningest Pac-10 school over the last 3 years might be - remember,
last year the Cougars led the nation in takeaways with 48, with 24
INT's and another 24 fumble recoveries which led to 142 points,
including 18 touchdowns. Take Washington State

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ref# 151129
GameDate: Friday, September 3, 2004 8:00 PM
Matchup: Green Bay Packers vs Tennessee Titans
Grade: Premium Play
Selection: Play on the Tennessee Titans

Reason:
A little different situation here than the Cowboys going on 3 days
rest. The Titans will be operating on 4 days rest and using this
game as a dress rehersal for week 1 of the regular season. Teams
operating in the preseason on 4 days rest is not as uncommon as you
might think, and those teams have fared VERY well both SU & ATS. The
secret is not to expend too much energy in the first leg, which the
Titans did not on Monday night in Dallas. Meanwhile, the Packers
focus is on staying healthy and finalizing the pecking order of the
3rd and 4th stringers, which gives the Titans an agenda advantage.
Remember, the Titans under Jeff Fisher are now 14-5 SU and 17-3 ATS
L20 NFLX games, so getting it done has always been a priority for
this group, including a 9-1 ATS run over their last 10 pre-season
games. Take Tennessee

Ref# 151933
GameDate: Friday, September 3, 2004 8:10 PM
Matchup: Kansas City Royals vs Minnesota Twins
Grade: Premium Play
Selection: Play on the Minnesota Twins

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ref# 151934
GameDate: Friday, September 3, 2004 7:30 PM
Matchup: Montreal Alouettes vs Ottawa Renegades
Grade: Premium Play
Selection: Play on the Montreal Alouettes

Reason:
Montreal and Ottawa have played once this season where the Als won a
July 9th game in Montreal by a 46-22 score. The Als come into this
game healthy and riding a 3 game winning streak and their 9-1 record
is a league best. For Ottawa, things are not so rosy as they sit
dead last in the East at 4-5 and despite starting the season 3-0 they
are currently on a 3 game losing streak and have lost five of their
last 6. With Toronto losing last week and the Als winning they have
a 6 point lead in the division, and frankly that race is over. The
Eastern final will go in Montreal. As for Ottawa, they need a win
badly as a loss and they could be four points out of a playoff
position with the Red Hot BC Lions ( coming off a labour Day weekend
bye week ) on next weeks schedule. Montreal has two road game left
against divisional rivals ( Ottawa and then Hamilton ) before their
bye week in week 14. I guarentee you that head coach Don Mathews (
Winningest coach in league history ) wants to go into that break at
11-1, all but clinched the division and healthy to finish off the
season. When you match up the teams you have the highest passing Qb
with the second highest passing offesne in Montreal meeting a defense
in Ottawa who can't cover. Flip it around you have the best defense
in Canada who are going to punish a hobbling Kerry Joseph. Motivated
or not, Ottawa can't eat what Montreal is serving. Montreal will win
this game going away. Take Montreal

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The picks:
The Deutsche Bank Championship is in its second year at the TPC of Boston. What players learned about the course last year may not matter this year, as its design has changed. Incidentally, the TPC was built on wetlands, because rich people don't give a shit about wetlands and wetlands provide a nice, peaceful setting from which to make deals. Now light up your cigar and bet on the following players:
3. Justin Rose (51:1). He's had an inconsistent season with two top-10s and three missed cuts. Putting is a problem for Rose, but remember a guy can get that flat stick rolling any time. Rose is also not so accurate off the tee, but manages to hit greens anyway. Last year he came third in this tournament.

2. Tiger Woods (5:1). If I'm right about the guy below, Tiger's going to be in the running Sunday, too, because he doesn't want to lose his #1 world ranking. This tournament could be a dogfight between the game's two best players. Last year Tiger finished T7 in the inaugural Deutsche Bank Championship. Nothing's changed much with what ails him: he ranks 176th in Driving Accuracy Percentage. Added bonus of the week: listening to thousands of New Englanders scream, "Go Tigah!"

1. Vijay Singh (6:1). Singh has had an extraordinary season with five wins, including a major. He also struggles with his driving accuracy, and his putter is wonkier than Woods', but what can you say, the guy has a will to win and does. Last year he finished fourth in this tournament.

Miami Dolphins at New Orleans Saints

3* New Orleans -5 1/2

I don't know how Tampa Bay only scored 17 points against Miami last week? The Bucanners had 360 total yards compared to the Dolphins 209 and Miami committed the only two turnovers of the game. The TB quarterbacks completed 24 of 33 attempts. Let's not forget the most pathetic offensive effort the past month goes to the Dolphins as well two weeks ago when they accumulated five first downs and a robust 98 total yards of offense against Washington, who in turn lost at St. Louis by 25 points in their next game. Last time I looked "The Animal" and 17 clients couldn't lose to the Rams by that margin in August with Coach Martz and his "who cares" approach to the preseason. I'm not exactly convinced either Jay Fiedler or A.J. Feely deserves to be a starting QB in this league. I can tell you the Dolphins have sat on their collective asses and done nothing about replacing Mr. Williams in the backfield. Last week Sammy Morris was the #1 ground-gainer producing a whopping 20 yards on eight carries. You can be sure Coach Wannstedt is trembling with the thought of his fragile starters playing on the artificial surface of the Superdome. Don't look now but the ageless and much-injured and traveled Ki-Jana Carter has actually looked good at the New Orleans camp. Last week alone he had 78 yards rushing on 10 carries in Chicago and has been a nice back-up behind Deuce McAllister. The Saints by now are used to not having Aaron Brooks in the lineup and once again will give most of the work tonight to Bouman and O'Sullivan. According to Coach Haslett "We're going to treat the starters like we're playing a regular-season game this week that they're getting ready to play," The Dolphins have only scored 26 points in 12 quarters the last three weeks and Rosenfels and Stoerner have been pathetic as reserve QB's (combined 6-of-22 the last two weeks). Wannstedt said Rosenfels and Stoerner will "take care of the 2nd half". Now there's a statement left up to interpretation. I'll take the Saints despite the gigantic line move today as New Orleans was -3 this morning.
