NESS NOTES
MOTOR CITY BOWL NOTES: This will be the 6th
Motor City Bowl, but after playing the last five years in
the Silverdome, this game will be played in Ford Field,
the new home of the Detroit Lions. It will also be, the
first-ever meeting between Toledo and Boston
College. The Rockets will be making their 8th all-
time bowl appearance and second straight Motor
City appearance (last year they beat Cincinnati 23-16).
The Rockets are 6-1 all-time in bowl games, with their
only loss coming in the 1984 Cailfornia Bowl, when they
lost to UNLV, 30-13. Later, that game was forfeited to
Toledo, due to the use of ineligible players by UNLV (a
revelation so SHOCKING, the town almost CLOSED-
UP!!). Boston College makes its FOURTH STRAIGHT
bowl appearance, a school-record. It is the school's
14th all-time bowl and the Eagles have a 7-6 career
mark, in bowls. Both teams are 8-4. Toledo owns the
nation's second-biggest OL (averaging 320.2 lbs!) and
a QB (Brian Jones), that completed 70.7% of his
passes, while throwing for 3115 yards with 21 TDs and
just 7 interceptions. Toledo lost its starting RB Wiliam
Bratton (639 yards) on 10/26 to a broken ankle, but
since then, two freshman, Astin Martin (754 yards) and
Trinity Dawson (726 yards), have filled in nicely. That
big OL, has also allowed, just 16 sacks! Bos Coll can
brag about its leading rusher, Derrick Knight, who
topped 100-yards in NINE of twelve games, finishing
the year with 1367 yards. QB Brian St Pierre led the
Big East's second-best passing offense, but he threw
more interceptions (17), than TDs (15). Surprisingly,
the Eagles' leading receiver, Keith Hemming, has
just 37 catches!
INSIGHT BOWL NOTES: As in the Motor City
Bowl, Insight Bowl opponents Oregon St and
Pittsburgh, are meeting for the first time-ever! For
Ore St, this is the team's third bowl game in four
years, while for Pitt, this makes it three straight
bowls, under Walt Harris! Harris is 35-35 as the
Panthers head coach, but 22-14, the last three
seasons. Pretty impressive, when you consider
that Pitt was 24-53-1, the seven seasons before
he arrived! Ore State's Dennis Erickson has done
even a better job up in Corvalis, for the Beavers.
Ore St hadn't been to a bowl game since the
1965 Rose Bowl, prior to Erickson leading the
Beavers to the 199 Oahu Bowl. In 2000, Erickson
got Ore St into a BCS Bowl (the Fiesta), where
they CRUSHED Notre Dame, 41- 9. Both teams
have outstanding defenses, Ore St ranking 10th
nationally (293 ypg) and Pittsburgh ranking 11th
(293.4 ypg). On offense, Pittsburgh QB Rod
Rutherford played very well the last ten games,
averaging 234 ypg. It helps, when you have one
of the nation's best freshman WRs, in Larry
Fitzgerald (64 catches for 11 TDs). Ore St is
led by soph RB, Steven Jackson. Jackson had
1656 yards rushing in 2002, a new OSU school-
record. Over his final five games, he averaged
178 ypg, as OSU went 4-1. QB Derek Anderson
opened the season by tossing 15 TD passes with
just ONE interception, in the team's first four
games. Then however, the Beavers moved to
Pac-10 play and Anderson completed just 37.7
% of his passes, with just FIVE TD passes and
ELEVEN interceptions, over the next seven games.
He FINALLY righted himself, by throwing for 340
yards and FOUR TDs (NO interceptions), in Ore
State's final game of the year, a 45-24 win over
Oregon. This will be Ore St's 9th bowl game and
Pittsburgh's 22nd. You may find this surprising
(I did!), Pittsburgh's first-four bowl appearances,
from 1928 thropugh 1937, were ALL, in the Rose
Bowl, where Pittsburgh went 0-4!!
THURSDAY'S FREE PICK: Dallas Mavericks at New
Orleans Hornets (8:35 ET). The Mavs have raced-off
to the league's best start, with a 23-4 mark. A closer
look however, shows that after going 11-2-1 ATS thru
their first 14 games, the Mavs are just 4-9 ATS, over
their last 13. The Hornets have found their new home
court in New Orleans, to their liking! So far, the
Hornets are 11-1 SU at home, losing only to the
Clippers (of all teams!) on 12/9. Take the Hornets!
LINESHEET
DID HE REALLY SAY THAT?
I wanted to have a career in sports when I was young,
but I had to give it up. I'm only six feet tall, so I couldn't play basketball. I'm only 190 pounds, so I couldn't play football.
And I have 20-20 vision, so I couldn't be a referee. ~Jay Leno
