While hoops experts have questioned Xavier?s ability to play well when it matters most, the Musketeers have hunkered down in the locker room with the resolve to be the team that excelled for 35 minutes Saturday at Memphis.

XU is a half-game out of first place in the Atlantic 10 regular-season race with seven conference games left. If it beats those opponents ? including league-leading Temple ? it controls its destiny.

?We don?t have to catch anybody. There?s nobody that?s 9-0 in the conference and we have to hope that a couple people drop some games they shouldn?t,? coach Chris Mack said.

Xavier?s bid for a sixth straight A-10 regular-season title continues at 7 p.m. today against Rhode Island, a conference cellar dweller that has evolved behind mid-year transfers Billy Baron (Virginia) and Andre Malone (Auburn).

The Rams (5-19, 2-7 A-10) haven?t been great shooters or prolific defensive rebounders. They own a conference-worst scoring defense.

What they do have are good offensive rebounders and spurts of success from the perimeter to the paint that have contributed to stunning upsets of former league leaders Dayton and Massachusetts.

?The second half of the season here they?ve played well and had some big wins, especially going into Dayton, playing in a hostile environment and getting a win,? guard Brad Redford said. ?We can?t look over any team in this stretch, especially at this time of the year.?

Sophomore guard Baron, son of coach Jim Baron, averages a team-best 13.5 points and is shooting about as well from 3-point range as the team?s second leading scorer, Nikola Malesevic. Veteran Orion Outerbridge and freshman standout Jonathan Holton anchor frontcourt.

For Xavier, playing at Cintas Center for the first time since the Saint Louis loss, defending the Rams well could pay dividends. The Muskies have held foes to 36.2 percent shooting in wins and surrendered 44.9 percent in losses.

Freshman Dez Wells said his 19 points at Memphis were meaningless because of the defeat, but he was pleased with his defense for much of the contest. He made sure to share his defensive grade after coaches doled out the scores.

?I?m usually second-to-last or the last in defensive grading,? Wells said.

?I thought I was due for a really, really good game defensive-wise. It means a lot to me. I can?t go from having a great defensive game to having a poor one. So I?m just trying to hone my skills and just learn anything I can about the Xavier system defensively.?

Mack said defensive grades are determined by several factors, from ball pressure and ball screen defense to transition defense. Wells? struggle has been blocking out ? something he didn?t have to do in high school because of his size and athleticism.

?He did a really good job of guarding the basketball. I thought he did an excellent job of blocking out. Memphis wasn?t a huge ball screen team. He did a great job in screening actions off the ball and gap responsibilities,? Mack said.

Wells? improvement in that area could come in handy against a Rams team averaging a conference-best 16 rebounds.

XU has never lost to Rhody in Cincinnati, and the Muskies are counting on a cohesive performance to keep the 7-0 streak intact.

?Despite taking shots and people feeling like, ?What?s wrong with Xavier?? our guys are continuing to come to practice to get better, to improve,? Mack said. ?I like our team. I like the fact that we?re continuing to work through some things in hopes that we can win this championship and go out the way we want to go out.?

Scouting Rhode Island!!!

By Andy Mac Williams,

The Muskies (6-3 A-10) need a home win over URI badly Wednesday night to keep their heads above water in the scrambled jampacked Atlantic 10. Temple sits all alone in first place at 6-2. The Owls have won 6 straight in the league and figure to make it 7 in a row Wednesday against Charlotte. TU has 6-10 Michael Eric back in the starting line-up.They've lost one of their last 30 at Liacouras Center in Philly. XU plays TU Saturday night out East ideally with solo first in the conference at stake. Xavier is tied for second with St Louis, La Salle and UMass.

SLU has a tough assignment playing St Joe's on Hawk Hill in Philadelphia. STJ is 5-4. To make the Top 4 and garner a bye directly to the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals in Atlantic City, the Hawks have to beat the Billikens Wednesday. La Salle meets Richmond(3-6) at Tom Gola Arena. The Explorers are unbeaten at home. UMass also is perfect at home (Amherst). They host Mark Schmidt's SBU Bonnies. SBU's in the same boat as St Joe's. At 5-4 they need a road upset badly to have a shot at a Top 4 finish.

The Muskies opponent Rhode Island is 5-19 overall (2-7 in the A-10) tied for 13th with Fordham. The Rams power rating numbers are brutal (220-Ken Pom) (244-RPI). The Muskies'NCAA resume takes a major hit with a loss to URI.

The facts are that R.I. is getting better. They've won 2 of their last three-upsetting Dayton at UD Arena 86-81 and taking UMass 81-78 in OT at Kingston. URI lost badly to Temple 73-56 last Saturday.

Coach Jim Baron's been around the A-10 for a lifetime (playing and coaching at St Bonnies-11th year at Rhode Island). His teams push the ball and usually score near 80 PPG.

Defensively, the Rams usually yield almost as many. It's entertaining fastbreak firewagon basketball. Baron lost 4 regulars from last season's 20-14 team. He was forced to suspend leading scorer Jamal Wilson in December.

Younger son Billy Baron became elligible just before Christmas after transferring from Virginia (ACC). He's helped stabilize things(13.5P-4.6R-2.5A) with a 25 point game at Dayton. He's alot like older brother Jimmy-a 2009 URI grad-great shooter-basketball savvy coaches' son.

Forward Andre Malone(6-6 210-Auburn transfer) joined the team at mid-year also and had been playing well but he's missed the last 3 games. Sr power forward Orion Outerbridge(6-9 210) has always been en enigma. He went wild against UMass(29P-11R) but disappears in other games.

Frosh forward Jonathan Holton(6-9 220) has been A-10 Frosh of the Week a couple times. He went for 13P-13R against Temple. The PG is 5-11Frosh Mike Powell from Chicago. He's learning on the job(9P-4A).

The Rams have the obligatory Eastern European 3 point specialist(6-7 Jr Nikola Malesevic). He made 46% from 3 last year but is down considerably in 2012. We all know how those guys burn XU though.

The Muskies clobbered URI 66-46 on the road in last season's A-10 opener pounding the Rams inside and running past them for many lay-ups and dunks. This year URI has more depth and size inside but much less experience in the backcourt.

X should find a way to win this handily but Rhode Island is no joke. Jim Baron's had a few hurdles this season but his young team seems to be improving. Hopefully not enough to give Xavier a run at Cintas though.
