5ft, pin high......
I took care of one of those kids yesterday. Poor kid had buckshot from his rib margin on the right all the way up to the top of his head. Pulled about 1L of blood out of his right lung. Blast bruised his small bowel. 6 pellets embedded in his skull.

That little hospital in Dekalb did one hell of a job......they arent built to handle 7 patients, and they ran a tight mass casualty drill......20 patients total, including DOAs! 6 head traumas. Our 2 patients were stabilized expertly, and all of their criticals were airlifted out expediently. Must of looked like an LZ there, 4 different aircraft to 3 different hospitals in 60-90min.

A hospital that small!! I'll be honest with you.....thats a hit or miss proposition. The reason is likely proximity to Chicago.....which pumps out 60 ER residents and 10-12 trauma fellows / yr. Many rural communities would not have the benefit of a trained pool of MDs.......lucky.

Kudos to the staff at Kishwaukee hospital.........doubt anyone there would ever read this..........but just in case..........you did it right yesterday. That will be lost in all the other noise from this incident.:toast:

Also, the lessons learned from VaTech seemed to have stuck. Security handled it pretty well by all accounts.

The incidents are getting closer to home.......I don't think I'm joking anymore when I say I'm arming myself. the idea make me nauseous, but unless the law changes, I keep coming back to the conclusion that there's no other way. I came thisclose 3.5 yrs ago when I was burgled while at work............now I don't see any other way. Why the hell couldn't that happen in my ER:shrug: ? I'm in a pretty crappy part of town...........mixed ethnicity, poor, plenty of transplanted Chicago gangbangers........and there's no question I've pissed a few people off over 8 yrs. My name is no secret........you see it above. Its unique. Having an unlisted number/address is thin security.

Im freakin' depressed today...........how people bring children into this fvcked up world baffles me......we are not leaving it a better place than we found it.

Yours without the loathing, but a healthy dose of fear............doc

It's spooky right now. Everyone that knew him that is talking -- as of this point -- paints a picture of a successful student and are shocked at what happened. I mean, anyone would be shocked, but this guy sounded like a grounded, normal guy, and that no one saw this coming. I have seen headlines about him stopping taking mediciation, but don't know much about that angle.

"the bunker"
N ILL... why is it us and no one else.

it`s not just us,bro.....i search the net a bit and some of the crap that happens around the world makes this sound like a day at the circus....

we`re human beings..not all that far removed from the animals.......it`s just a part of the human condition...

thankfully,in our country it`s still an aberration...

for some strange reason, bernie goetz came to mind....and this old rap ditty.....

"my first name's bernie, my last name's goetz
and you all ain't heard nothin' yet;

i took a midnight ride on the irt
and four ugly suckers surrounded me...

they spoke in a language i couldn't understand,
but they each held a screwdriver in their hand.

i said, "show and tell sure can be fun --
that's a nice screwdriver, did i show you my gun?"

coulda used ole` bernie the other day....

I trained at Big Res and was moonlighting at OLR for a year as well..........I know all those guys down there on Central/Addison........thats a busy place. Helped my Spanish quite a bit.......was just talking about a case I had there back in '98 with a buddy of mine while at work last nite.

Kind of knew the news was going to drift to a week of who this guy was, and then this whole thing will just go away....

I don't want to start the 2nd Amendment rants again, but what I really find amazing is that it is not even brought up anymore......not with VaTech, not this week, not ever in relation to these stories we keep hearing with what seems ever increasing frequency. NRA lobby has a pretty good grip, huh? Its like Soc Sec......the 3rd rail of politics. Still pondering a purchase myself, and like I said, it kind of makes me sick.......but thats the game:shrug: ......until the rules change, it seems sillier and sillier not to play with every club available.

In the other direction, what are the laws on carrying your weapon? I would keep it at home, of course, but whats the point of that related to these random shootings? Can I walk around with a licensed weapon just in case some kid who stops taking his medicines tries to light people up at my bank or Starbuck's or a class I'm lecturing? See how freaking crazy I'm becoming? Some days I think it would just be easier to be stupid or ig'nant, or both.

Damn coffee again!!

escarzamd,
Of course different laws on concealed carry in different states. We got our right to conceal carry a couple of years ago here in Ohio. Here there's no carry into banks or any other fed bldg, no carry at bars, no carry at schools. Any business has their right to post a no weapons sign in their business.

like tony said, different rules for different states. Some states are reciprocal with concealed carry, some are not. In Kentucky, u can go to class for about 8 hours on a Saturday and be eligible to apply for concealed carry. When u apply, they background check u thoroughly, and it usually takes 6-8 weeks.

Personally, I've never tried to get the permit, and I doubt I ever will. I don't feel it is necessary for my line of work or activities I engage in. If I lived in a more urban area, I probably would.

From what they are saying, this kid was pretty off in the head. His parents sent him away to see some pro shrinks after high school. Parents aren't quick to do things like that. I doubt anyone was keeping tabs on him of late. Maybe the parents are up there in age.

True dat.

We tend to fixate on these oddball crazy circumstances while losing sight of the insanity that happens everyday. Yes, it is crazy to think someone would walk into a classroom and fire a gun, however, every day, there are people walking into election offices, onto buses, and into crowds loaded with explosives that are quickly detonated. It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world.

Time to sling mud:

I haven't heard anyone mention that this was God's will.
