Okay, there is only one game on tomorrow and instead of having 40 differant posts of opinions and info can we all together in one thread, I wont have time tomorrow to read every post and it would be easier for me and I'm sure (I hope) I'm not the only one that would find the only game on the board tomorrow on one thread.

Here is my 2 cents

GAME: Siena (16-18) vs. Alcorn State (20-9).
REGIONAL: East, Play-in Game.
TIME: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EST.
SITE: Dayton Arena, Dayton, Ohio.

Siena fought its way into the NCAA tournament by winning four games in four days while playing host to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament. The Saints will now try to fight past Alcorn State to reach the field of 64 as the bottom two teams in the field of 65 meet Tuesday at Dayton, Ohio.

The Saints (16-18) are the only team in the NCAA tournament field with a losing record this year, and the first since the 1999 Florida A&M squad reached the first round after winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament. That Rattlers squad needed those three wins just to enter their game against Duke with a 12-18 record.

Yet Rob Lanier's team is riding the momentum of its conference tournament victory. Despite being a seventh seed, the Saints were able to use their home-court advantage at the Pepsi Center in Albany, N.Y., to reel off four wins in four days, capped by their 92-77 victory over Niagara in the championship game Monday.

"They know that we weren't a group of losers," Lanier said. "We just didn't do enough winning to have the kind of confidence it takes to be a great team, but we kept working hard. They continued to trust in what we were doing and we continued to have patience with them."

Dwayne Archbold, who averages 20.3 points, again proved to be Siena's go-to player by averaging 27.8 points in the four MAAC tournament victories. He scored 30 in the championship game, his third 30-point effort of the season.

Siena's lone tournament win came in 1989, when the 14th-seeded Saints upset third-seeded Stanford in the first round. Their last appearance was in 1999.

Alcorn State is back in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1999, when the Braves - who won the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles - pushed Stanford hard in the first round as a 15th seed in the West Region.

The Braves, who carry a six-game winning streak into this contest, captured the automatic bid with a 70-67 victory over Alabama State on Saturday. Marcus Fleming had 20 points and eight rebounds for Alcorn State, which avenged a loss to the Hornets in last year's SWAC tournament title game.

"You make your own fortune," said coach Davey Whitney, who has led the Braves to all six of their NCAA tournament appearances in 26 years. "We forgot about last year. That game was not even in the picture at the beginning of the season."

Aside from a victory over Division I newcomer Morris Brown, the Braves have no non-conference victories over established schools. Alcorn State started its season with losses at New Mexico State, Southern Mississippi, New Mexico, UAB and fellow tournament participant Hawaii.

The winner of this game will face top-seeded Maryland on Friday.

PROBABLE STARTERS:
Siena - F Archbold (20.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg), F Justin Miller (6.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg), C James Clinton (6.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg), G Andy Cavo (6.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg), G Prosper Karangwa (10.6 ppg, 2.9 apg).

Alcorn State - F Brian Jackson (10.6 ppg, 3.9 rpg), F Fleming (14.8 ppg, 7.6 rpg), C Walter Harper (8.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg), G Jeff Cammon (6.9 ppg, 4.2 apg), G Jason Cable (11.9 ppg, 2.4 apg).

HOW THEY GOT HERE: Siena - Automatic bid, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion. Alcorn State - Automatic bid, Southwestern Athletic Conference champion.

ALL-TIME TOURNAMENT RECORD: Siena - 1-2, 3 years. Alcorn State - 3-5, 6 years.

i do know that Alcorn is the class of the Swac......got some buddies at TSU and they all say that ALcorn is clearly the best team......may take the points in this one.....especially if public keeps betting it up......would think that this play-in game is going to be a barn burner more often than not

Damn Teddy,
If you do that much analysis on every game, no wonder you're suffering from burnout! :)
Nice job, though.

I've always found that tournament time is the toughest - comparing apples and oranges. Conference strengths, power ratings, conference refereeing differences, style of play, etc., etc.

I think a dart board might be my best tournament handicapping tool. :D

Good luck!

- The fix is on.

Teddy --

As I posted yesterday I like Siena. I got them at -4 and I think they'll win by double digiits.

Archbald is shooting great and is money in the bank. Karangwa has really stepped up his level of play in the last few games.

Also, Siena's best true point guard Mark Price is back tonight; he missed the entire MAAC tourney with an abscessed (sp?) tooth He'll be the 6th man off the bench.

Siena was not good on the road this season but Alcorn State was even worse.

I don't know that much about Alcorn State but it tells me something when the selection committee chose Winthrop over them as the #64 team.

Alcorn State might be higher in RPI but they're behind Winthrop and Siena in Sagerin ratings. Sagerin has Siena winning by 6 tonight.

Alcorn State may own the SWAC but against good division one teams like Hawaii and New Mexico they got crushed. They even lost to first year Division One team Morris Brown on the road (Morris Brown is one of the bottom 10 Div 1 teams according to Sagerin.

Great work in here, guys, outstanding info and thoughts.

2 things that concern me.....

#1 Mind set
Alcorn St was a little shocked that they had to play in the
play-in game, and had to move their travel plans ahead. They're probably a little upset that they had to play an extra game on Tuesday. Don't know how they will respond.

#2 Fatigue
Oh yes, the "F" word. Looking at the local paper, it looks like they had to pack overnite, get on a bus at 3am to Baton Rouge, hop on a plane to Atlanta for a connecting flight to Cinci, and THEN another bus trip to Dayton. I know the adrenaline rush of being in the opening game of the big dance will probably override the fatigue, but will it show in the 2nd 1/2? Alcorn plays an uptempo type of offense, will Alcorn have enough gas in the tank to stay close in the last 10min? I'm not sure, as I'm trying to dig into more info on how they played this year after treacherous travel.

My lean is to Siena, but will have to dig a little further. During this time of the year, it's always prudent to look at the dogs first, 2nd, and 3rd, before deciding on backing a fav.

Any thoughts on the above would be apreciated.

Grouchy, groggy players not happy with setup

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

DAYTON, Ohio -- C'mon in, Alcorn State and Siena. Lace 'em up and learn firsthand what it's like to play in the only NCAA tournament game that inspires more dread than dreams.

It's the play-in, and it's like nothing else -- the all-night travel, the missed meals, the quiet arena that feels more like a sideshow than center stage.

"It's been real, real strange," sleepy Alcorn State guard Jeff Cammon said Monday after practice.

For the second straight year, the NCAA has its two lowest seeds playing in Dayton for the 64th spot in the tournament. Tuesday's winner will catch another flight to Washington to play No. 1 Maryland on Friday.

The play-in format returned last season when the number of automatic bids expanded to 31. Northwestern State beat Winthrop, and both teams grumbled about the travel hardships.

Alcorn State (21-9) and Siena (16-18) found out fast that just getting there is no fun.

The Braves were surprised to learn Sunday night that they, not Winthrop, were headed to Dayton to play the only team in the tournament with a losing record.

They stayed up all night packing and planning, then got on a bus at 3 a.m. in Mississippi for a two-hour ride to Baton Rouge, where they caught a plane to Atlanta, where they had a brief delay changing flights to Cincinnati, where they caught another bus for an hour-long ride up Interstate 75 to Dayton.

Breakfast? Lunch? Sleep?

"I haven't gotten any sleep," Cammon said.

Neither had the Braves' 72-year-old coach. Davey L. Whitney didn't get to nod off until the team reached its hotel in Dayton, had some roast beef and rice for lunch, then relaxed for a little while before heading to the virtually empty arena for a 6 p.m. EST practice.

"I never take a nap," Whitney said. "At 20 minutes after 5, I was out. That's why we're late."

They got to the arena five minutes late for their one-hour workout, the lack of sleep showing in their slow gait. Whitney's team has played seven games in 14 days and then had to travel overnight -- not exactly conducive to a good showing in Tuesday's play-in.

"I've only started thinking about it in the last 24 hours," Whitney said. "Somebody's going to have to look at it because I understand they had the same situation last year. It's not conducive for teams to give their top performances."

Siena had it a little easier -- the Saints' flight didn't leave New York until 9 a.m. They weren't in position to complain about anything, anyway.

Siena won four games in four days on its home floor to get the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's automatic bid. The Saints are the 16th team to make the NCAA tournament with a losing record.

Florida A&M reached the tournament with a 12-18 record in 1999, the last to do so. Only one of those 16 teams actually won a game -- Bradley won two in 1955.

The Saints knew they'd be relegated to the play-in. They had the lowest RPI ranking in the field at 218, while Winthrop was 217 and Alcorn State 182.

"The success is in being here," coach Rob Lanier said. "Everything else is gravy."

Alcorn State has a deeper bench and a more uptempo style that could give it the advantage -- providing the players can stay awake.

Last year's play-in drew a crowd of 6,813 to University of Dayton Arena, roughly half of capacity. More than 7,500 tickets -- priced at $5 and $10 -- have been sold for Tuesday's game.

The game was bumped to TNN last year, when out-of-work coach Rick Pitino did the commentary. It's been moved to ESPN this year.

Whitney, in his 26th season at Alcorn State, has already won a couple of NCAA play-in games in Dayton, beating Xavier in 1983 and Houston Baptist a year later.

"I won both of those games on this floor," he said. "I'm hoping that this floor will be just as good to us."

The winner gets to head East for another game in three days. The loser gets to feel like any other NCAA tournament team that shows up and then leaves after one game.

That may be the play-in's closest resemblance to the real thing.

"It feels like the NCAA tournament," Lanier said. "If we lose, we go home."
