Assuming you just want to go play some to have fun and have a chance at a lucky hit, I think it's great. What the heck...it's gambling, and if you don't spend hours there chasing then it's nobody's business what you do. It's fun, interactive, and of course not probable that you will walk away a winner, just depends on what you want out of the experience. In some respects, slot payouts are as good a bet as some others in a casino, and there are some good things to keep in mind.
I think Dog's comment is probably the most important key to winning at slots. Go to one of the slot islands that have an attendant (maybe one that has a friendly face), hand them $10 and ask if they know of any machine around that has been paying better than others. Although you might think that the ones who haven't hit are "due", that is not necessarily the case. In fact, it might be outright false in many cases. There are some that seem to cycle in wins at certain times. I realize it's all a crap shoot, and not dependable, but this method has worked for me more than once. I remember going to Caesar's Palace early in the AM, and having an entire area to myself, with a very bored and friendly attendant who pointed to a couple of machines that had been "hot" on their shift. One of them paid me nicely.
I have hit a couple of nice jackpots in the few times I have messed with them (don't play often at all), but the attendant thing is the best advice I could give - and I would go at an "off" time when you have a bigger selection. Another piece of advice I have been told to follow was to not sit in one spot and feed any machine that does not return anything. I set my limit of consecutive losing spins at three, and stick to it. This keeps money in your bucket and slows down your outlay.
The other biggest thing is to cash out if you actually win something nice. Don't throw all that money back into the machines if you are that fortunate to hit something nice. The money goes so fast...step away from those machines with coins, and don't spin away credits which don't seem real, and aren't, until they clang into your bucket.
It may sound stupid, but taking a lot of breaks, and getting some fresh air is really important when messing with slots. Sitting in one spot for a long time will kill you.
