The abdominal injury to center Andrew Smith is the latest hurdle to confront the Butler Bulldogs, who have been clearing them as Edwin Moses used do.

?We keep being thrown curveballs,? said coach Brad Stevens, who obviously likes analogies to baseball more than track.

Stevens said Monday that Smith was injured while trying to retrieve a loose ball during last week?s 59-56 victory at George Washington. The injury is not long-term, the coach said, but will keep Smith out of Wednesday?s home game vs. Charlotte and probably Saturday?s game at Fordham.

The Bulldogs have already endured the dismissal of Chrishawn Hopkins, the transfer of Chris Harrison-Docks, a scary injury to Rotnei Clarke and the death of Erik Fromm?s father. It was going to be a bumpy season anyway with introduction to a new conference, the Atlantic 10.

Stevens said the Bulldogs have shown maturity in their approach. Fromm epitomizes that.

?We always have people willing and eager to take the next role,? Fromm said. ?That?s what?s made us good in the past.?

The Bulldogs especially will miss the 6-foot-11 Smith against Charlotte?s big front line. He is the team?s No. 2 scorer (11.4) and rebounder (5.4), and his contributions have extended beyond statistics.

Butler has the 6-foot-8 Fromm or 6-foot-9 Kameron Woods to fill in up front. It would not be surprising if 6-foot-8 Emerson Kampen, a fifth-year senior walk-on, also is employed.

Stevens would not commit to a conventional lineup and said he would consider using three guards to spread the floor. If the Bulldogs do that, the lineup would have one player, 6-foot-6 Khyle Marshall, taller than 6-foot-4. That appears risky against a strong rebounding team like Charlotte, but that could also create match-up problems for Charlotte.

Reeling Charlotte 49ers facing tough A-10 road hazards

Next up for 49ers basketball: Atlantic 10 leaders No. 11 Butler Bulldogs on Wednesday and Saint Louis Billikens on Saturday.

Charlotte 49ers coach Alan Major neither wants nor expects sympathy about the rugged stretch of the Atlantic 10 schedule his team is working its way through.

The 49ers (17-6, 5-4) have lost two straight and four of their past six. Now they head out on a road trip that includes games against two teams tied for first place in the league: Wednesday against 11th-ranked Butler (20-4, 7-2) and Saturday against Saint Louis (18-5, 7-2).

The Bulldogs and Billikens share the conference lead with Virginia Commonwealth, which beat Charlotte 68-61 Saturday at Halton Arena.

?I don?t want to preach, but it?s a ?Wall of Jericho? that every team in every league faces,? said Major. ?We?ve just got to keep hammering away and improving.?

Major said he spoke with his former boss ? Ohio State coach Thad Matta ? this week about the perils of life on the road.

?They played at Michigan and at Indiana just last week,? said Major. ?So that?s a very similar stretch for us.?

The 49ers have suffered key personnel losses recently, losing leading scorer DeMario Mayfield to an indefinite suspension and forward J.T. Thompson to a knee injury.

That leaves senior center Chris Braswell as the only upperclassman in a rotation that has shrunk from nine to seven players. Freshman center Mike Thorne and freshman guard Ivan Benkovic have seen their minutes increase in Mayfield and Thompson?s absence.

?We want our pups to step in these environments and keep making progress,? said Major.

A key will be Braswell, whose averages of 11.8 points and 5.6 rebounds are significantly below his junior year (15.8 ppg, 7.6 rpg).

?I don?t know if it?s so much that Chris is doing less, or that it?s other teams are honing in on him with double teams and junk defenses,? said Major. ?We?ve also got more balance now. But as we move forward, everybody has to raise his game a notch. In his case, that may result in us needing to get a few more buckets from him than we?ve been getting.?

Major, however, said the most important aspect of Wednesday?s game is for his players to have fun and appreciate playing the Bulldogs in Hinkle Fieldhouse, one of college basketball?s iconic arenas.

?It?s like I told Mike Thorne,? he said. ? ?We?re going to throw you out there Wednesday night. Go out there, put a smile on your face and try to enjoy it.? ?
=============

The Bulldogs, in their first season in the Atlantic 10, have victories against top-ranked Indiana and North Carolina. Butler will be without center Andrew Smith, who suffered an abdominal injury Saturday against George Washington. It has plenty of other options, though, especially in guard Rotnei Clark, a transfer from Arkansas who averages 16.9 points. Charlotte forward Willie Clayton is leading the league in field-goal percentage (58.0). David Scott
