doo if you start up again i would strongly recommend hypnotism. My mom went and quit cold turkey. Boy i needed that. She had the first sign of emphysema. Hasn't smoked since and she smoked for about 25 years.

Dela-where?
Congrats Doochuk!!!

I have been contemplating quitting for a while, but it has intensified lately, and knowing that other people like you have the courage to step up and make a positive change in their lives makes me know that I can in fact do it.

And kudos to all the MJers for supporting you and providing such important insight.

Keep up the good work!!!!

Way to go doo. I havn't completely quit yet, but I'm down from 3 packs a day to under a half. Cold turkey was too much for me. I just started a night shift position, and I think a lot of it is boredom. Hopefully a month of this will let me give them up. Again congrats.

TOKYO (Reuters) - A team of Japanese scientists have found a gene closely linked to nicotine addiction, which could lead to more effective ways for smokers to kick the habit, a Japanese daily said on Wednesday.

The team at Osaka University found that among heavy smokers -- defined as those who light up as soon as they get up in the morning -- a gene responsible for producing an enzyme that breaks down nicotine is more active than others, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.

After examining the gene CYP2A6 among 300 smokers and those who had smoked in the past, the scientists found that 70 percent of those with a highly active type of the gene were highly addicted to nicotine.

The percentage of heavy smokers among those with a less active CYP2A6 was lower at 40 percent, the finding showed.

If doctors can find out the type of the gene in patients who want to quit smoking, they can change treatment methods accordingly, such as adjusting the amount of nicotine patches prescribed to the smoker, the paper said

My BIL has talked for years about quitting...you know...the first of the year.....after the birthday....after vacation...etc. Last month was diagnosed with lung cancer and doctors are giving him 14 months. Just started chemo and blood transfusions ...... it ain't pretty. May leave behind a wife and two teenage daughters and not much for retirement funds or insurance plus a large mortgage ....he's 59.

Not looking for sympathy...just if you smoke...stop screwing around with the BS excuses.

Good luck, Doochuk.

My dad (61)-heavy smoker- just passed away on monday after basically fighting for every breath for the last five years. (emphysema) His body was absolutely decimated by the end of it and the greatest gift you can give your kids is to take measures so that they will never see you like that.

My aunt (dads sister-54), another heavy smoker, was just diagnosed with bladder cancer two weeks ago and is soon going in to have a large tumor removed, with unknown results as to how it will turn out. She has stopped smoking and I believe she will be successful after having just been down here with my dad for a week.

Grandpa-heavy smoker-kidney cancer. Kidney removed 14 years ago, stopped smoking, and he has survived.

Anyways, I have way too many bad habits to come from some position of lecturing anybody about anything, but sincerely, best of luck to you (and anybody else) with this.

Its funny you say that on how it rules you. lets say a good comedian comes on and ten of us are sitting there. No matter how funny he is somebody has to get up and go outside to smoke. I always say to them "look at what that shit is making you do." Same goes for a game or something like a show on HBO with no commercials. My brothe in law who i get along very well is a head case when it comes to this. He now will not go to any bar that won't let him smoke and he won't come to my house anymore. He tells me he isn't addicted but just likes to smoke. I tell him he is full of shit.
