I had to calm down a bit, and have some fun before I decided to share my latest work debacle!

A few years ago, I was laid off due to the huge downturn in economy. I have almost had everything in my work life happen that I am believing to be freakin jinxed. So, please allow me to vent:

It all started when I left the perfect situation as a HS teacher / Coach at my first school. My wife, has a position open at her school, and we wanted to start a family and wanted same vacations etc... so after some thought, we decided to make the jump. Well, I got the son out of the deal, but several months after being hired, the tax referendums failed, and then due to seniority 25 teachers were let go. Well, I was the last one hired..... so the first one pink slipped.

Decided to not stay in teaching after that. Financial reasons, and no referendums passed that year, so pretty mucn every district laid off. I then get into Pharmaceuticals. Women's Health Care. I loved the job at the time, and was doing well! 1 Year into it, their is a reorganization of sales force resources. Guess what, I was offered to stay on, but I would have to move to the Tampa / St. Petersburg area... I chose with new son and family here to stay in MN.

I then find within a month period...a new pharma position. Cardiovascular Medicine. I liked it, didn't like the pod type situation, but was into it with the launch of Vytorin and Zetia. Lasted their 18 months.... mutual decision to leave.

Within 4 months or so, I get offered a 5 state terriroty in the pharma industry. Seemed like a great job. I knew the company was being boiught out, it happens in pharma all the time, but war reassured they had authority to hire prior to teh actual merger. So, I am traveling for 3 weels, Vegas, Cleveland, Philly at our National Conference. I get on a plane arrive home by 5, and there is a message, that eventually takes a week to get to me that due to the merger, my position is going to a Senior Sales Rep from the company doing the purchasing of mine! So, out of there total time 4 weeks!!

I get a position with a manufacturing rep firm, getting items into Target. Great job. But, I was hired with them gaining another division within Super Target stores, thus justifying my position. Well, they never got the product line. 5 months, and let go. Still not my fault!

I then get recruited into Chemical Sales... little over 3 years, took a $800k territory into $5.8 million and then economy dropped etc. I was moved on...

I went to another chemical postion, which was not for me... due to the job just not my style... I was doing welll.... but I needed this job which is the only reason I took it. Lasted several months, before being recruited for my current job.

I took this job personally for the freedom, pay, and the bonues structure was not like anything I have ever seen. Nice fit! Welll, 5 months into it... the CFO/Part owner left in a spat with the CEO. A little shake-up so I was inscathed. Welll that brought upon a recriutment for a a new VP. He was hired, good guy... but figured no way he will get along with my National Sales Manager.... which is my boss. Well, for whatever reason... today my boss turned in his resignation. Remember he developed my territory, and was still active in all accounts. Turns out, he never signed his non-compete. He is now free to venture into my territories and poach without concern of a slap. But, there aslo goes a pretty good guy...who is very hands off.... and it was great. So conference call not that great.. as someone else will be hired, and I can just feel the micro-management coming. Also, the call ended with... we are looking at our compensation plan as well... and we will look at rolling it out in April. Fellas, that is not good!!!! All the reasons for taking the leap almost a year to the day, are leaving

I am telling you I am freakin jinxed! Hold on to this position.... cause in case you haven't noticed it still isn't easy out there!!

Perhaps. I go back to school, and switch my focus to counseling... cause I am getting tired of the sales things! I do it because I can, but getting tired of jerked around!!!

Ok, I thought I would feel better!!! Not!!!!

Some of us in sales know what's up and how shit works. This is the life of people in sales. It is the way it goes. Volatile. Some can't handle it, some can. I have been lucky. VERY LUCKY. I must be pulling on the end of your jinx rope.

LAWTCHAN could expand on the sales life further - he knows. You do too. On the other hand - good luck with your plays. :0074

Dogface, Sorry to hear it bro! I can only imagine the stress, especially having a child to provide for. I have been in sales for over 20 years and also always been 100% commission.
There have been many times where I wish I had taken my dad's advice and become a firefighter (like I wanted) when I was young, then find another gig that I could do for 20+ years that would provide a pension, so I could retire with 2 pensions. Great advice, wish I would have followed it.
For me, it seems like the best way is to work for a company that I can have pretty much unlimited income if I work my ass off and things start rolling in. But in those cases, there isn't a salary for stability.
I was curious if you have tried to get into sales for Orthopedic implants for trauma victims. I knew someone who made an awesome living doing that for a company called Synthes. Your customers are hospitals, who won't go bankrupt. I recall that the only requirement was a college degree and it didn't have to be in the medical field. They gave a salary with Beni's and you can make a shitload of commission. They are all over the country. It's one of those fields that doesn't get hit by the economy. People always get jacked up and need their stuff.

I wish you the best and keep us posted.

Forgot to mention I sell printing and packaging. You guys buy products that come out of a factory I rep. Food's, pharmaceutical's, cosmetics and such.

Dog,

Whenever I feel frustrated I watch this and get a big grin on my face..

Yes not the perfect answer, but it re-ignites that fire in my belly to get things done.

I think all of us, that have chosen the path of the sales have been frustrated over the last 5-8 years. But this is becoming the norm. The days of working for one or two companies then retiring after 25 years are gone. You need to work hard, close and only be responsible for your family. That is it..

Sell, close the deals, make tons of cash and the rest will fall into place. It may not be this job or the next job but once you find the one job, you will never look back!!

If you need a good book, read this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Greatest_Salesman_in_the_World

Feel good book, will it make you Sales go up? no.. But what it did for me is, everyday, I try to make it a better sales day then the last!!

Good Luck man!

from what i understand you are still a young man, many people hit the skids and have to start from scratch in their late 40's and late 50's with nothing in the bank.

just persevere, and stay focused, good things will happen:0074

Easier said than done, but try to look at the positive.

Despite numerous short stints (none of which are your fault) you are still getting hired. So you are doing something right because there are a lot in your shoes who don't get the offer. Hang in there :0074

Thanks gents...

Things still a tad bit unsettled.... sales meeting in April may clear some things up!

I appreciate the words, and the literature suggestions!
