Anyone know if there are major injuries I'm not aware of? The line opened at 12.5 Hokie and now 17.5? I have checked with friends in Reno and nobody seems to know what drove the number............lot of early public money on Va. Tech, but a 5 point swing in this amount of time usually indicates Sharp money (and a lot of it) came in on V. Tech. I was trying to make a case for So. Miss, afterall they just beat a good Houston team, and upended Nc. State? I realize Va. Tech needs to get off their ass......but I haven't been impressed with this years version of Beamer Ball??? If anyone knows anything please post......I'm tempted to get So. Miss +17.5...........Middlers should be salivating on this one.

I would not risk my hard earned money on a team who had a player doing some kind of self-promoting celebration dance late in the game while his team was getting pummeled.

NO, THANK YOU.

could vatech hammer by somiss by 25 or 30? sure, it could happen. but theres nothing 'sharp' about a move to back a team that clearly doesnt have the same swagger as in the past, nor the ability to score points in a hurry without the help of their defense.

On the injury front, Bower said senior offensive lineman Travis Cooley was suffering from a sprained knee ligament.

"(Travis) Cooley will probably be out a couple of weeks," said Bower. "We might have a chance to get him back for the East Carolina game but more than likely a couple of weeks."

Defensive backs LeVance Richmond and Caleb Hendrix were hobbling with minor ankle injuries and missed Monday's workout. Bower expects both to be ready for Saturday's game at Virginia Tech.

Also, reserve offensive lineman Ryan Hebert suffered a turf toe in the Houston contest.

"We don't know but he won't be able to practice until at least Wednesday," Bower said. "We'll have to do some shuffling there with him out and Cooley out. Other than that, I don't think anything real serious is going to keep anybody out so we came out in decent shape."

Notebook: RB Barrows quits over lack of PT

HATTIESBURG ? Southern Miss lost yet another running back, when sophomore C.J. Barrows told coach Jeff Bower Monday that he was quitting over a lack of playing time.

"Hung it up," Bower said. "Said he was unhappy with his role."

Barrows, who had been hampered by injury since arriving at USM in 2004, became the third running back to leave the team since the start of the season. Junior Cody Hull left following the season opener at Florida. Junior Larry Thomas left after North Carolina State.

But both saw their roles reduced with the ascension of freshman Damion Fletcher, who ranks eighth among Division I-A backs with 113.5 yards rushing per game.

This year, Barrows played in every game, mainly on special teams. He had 10 carries for 34 yards this fall.

With just Fletcher and Conrad Chanove on the depth chart, Bower said the redshirt will come off true freshman Tory Harrison.

"We'll play him," Bower said. "We've got to."

COOLEY TO MISS TECH GAME

Starting LG Travis Cooley will be sidelined Saturday at Virginia Tech after injuring his left knee in Saturday's 31-27 victory over Houston.

Bower said Cooley suffered a second-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament, but that he might be able to return for USM's Oct. 28 home game against East Carolina.

"More than likely, it's a couple weeks," Bower said.

Sophomore Wesley Housley is expected to make his first career start at Tech. Housley has played in only 64 snaps this season, including 42 snaps after stepping in Saturday .

But the 6-foot-2, 283-pound native of LaPlace, La., earned rave reviews this spring while with the starting unit while Cooley was recovering from offseason knee surgery.

The line's depth took another hit when back-up OG Ryan Hebert suffered a turf toe. He wore a protective boot Monday and likely will be held from practice until Wednesday.

CB Caleb Hendrix and FS LeVance Richmond were held from practice Monday evening with ankle sprains.

I.E....thanks for the info......it appears there won't be anything left in the stable if Fletcher goes down, and he has carried this team on the ground.

Buddy- not sure what game you are referring to? Perhaps FLorida?? Please elaborate as I don't know which team this WR plays for, nor who it is?

G-Man- I agree, but do you think the public has caused a 5 point swing in the matter of 48 hours? I will do some digging and find out why the jump......

Good Luck Gentlemen!

Last Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, Vt traveled to BC.

Late in the fourth quarter, a Vt safety made a solo tackle.

Lots of safeties make solo tackles.

But most of them get up, run back into position and get ready for the next play.

Not this jerk.

He danced around like a fool, high fivin' his teammates, lookin' for praise like he did something laudable.

Meanwhile, his team was down 20-3.

I'm not a big fan of self promoters.

Thank you Rebel........that would explain alot. No running game will mean a long day for J. Young in the pocket.........how will this team score?

Somebody knew something! I'm not sure there is any value in +17.5............Buddy, I agree, I haven't been impressed with Beamers Coaching since the young Vick incident. He appears to welcome Thug ball......I didn't see the game against B.C. so I missed this display, but it sounds like par for the course.......

From the Sunherald website.

www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/sports/15793987.htm

With Southern Miss tailback Damion Fletcher sidelined for Saturday's game at Virginia Tech, Conrad Chanove will get the bulk of the work in one of the more hostile environments in college football.

Fletcher, the No. 8 rusher in the nation at 113 yards per game, had minor surgery to remove cartilage Wednesday and should be back in the lineup when the Golden Eagles resume Conference USA play next week at home against East Carolina.

Until then, Chanove, a junior walk-on from Covington, La., will be the starter; freshman Tory Harrison, a redshirt until the Fletcher injury, will be No. 2.

Chanove, a 5-foot-9, 190-pounder, played in 12 games last season on special teams. Prior to that, he had been a member of the Golden Eagles track team since 2003; he advanced to the NCAA National Championships in 2005 with a javelin throw of 213 feet, 5 inches. He currently holds the school record at 216 feet, 6 inches.

"Certainly, we'll miss Damion," Southern Miss offensive coordinator Jay Johnson said. "There's no question that Conrad will do a good job for us.

"Conrad Chanove is a young man who gets everything he deserves."

It was Johnson who first got the opportunity to see Chanove perform back in 2004.

Johnson, then the running backs coach, quickly realized Chanove would end up on the field in some form or fashion.

"It's a feel-good story for an amazing kid," Johnson said. "I remember when he walked on and I got my first look at him in drills. He busted his tail through every drill. When you have someone like that, it's contagious to the other players on the team.

"I knew right then he was going on the team - maybe not at this extent - but he was going to make the team. It was a matter of time."

In high school, Chanove collected more than 800 yards of offense as a senior running back at Fontainebleau and 700 yards as junior.

Chanove, a human resource management major, averages 4.9 yards per carry on 18 attempts this season with a long run of 23 yards coming in a 37-17 win against N.C. State. Last week, while playing the first half, Chanove picked up 44 rushing yards and 23 passing yards in Southern Miss' 31-27 win against Houston.

When Cody Hull and Larry Thomas left the team during the early part of the season, Chanove moved into the backup slot behind Fletcher. With C.J. Barrows quitting the team this week, Chanove is the man when the Golden Eagles travel to Virginia Tech for a nationally televised game on ESPN U.

"It's a great story," Johnson said. "He's an amazing young man and a very good person."

As a team, Southern Miss is a solid 4-2 overall and 2-1 in C-USA play. After Virginia Tech, the Golden Eagles will play the favorite role in the final five games against East Carolina, at Memphis and Tulane before closing out the season at home against UAB and Marshall.

With a potential nine-win season at stake as well as an Eastern Division championship, Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower refuses to give his team an overall grade.

But the 16-year veteran is right on the money when he offers his first-half report on the 4-2 Golden Eagles.

"We're OK," Bower said. "When we're ready to play, we're good. When we're not, we're not. We've won the last four out of five, which is good. We're the type of football team that when we get ready to play and have a good week, we can play pretty well. When we don't, we don't."
