Watched a very good documentary on the Sochi Olympics, well only watched half of this British documentary, saw it on the passionate eye. here are some facts got from that program and three recent articles.
1. There is so much corruption in the Russia games, that there is a term for how much a business should add to the bid, ie. on how much they should add for bribes.
2. another word words added for how you distribute the bribe/bribes.
3. past winter games came in at 2 billion - 2.4 billion.
4. the Russian games were suppossed to cost an eye popping 8 billion.
5. the costs have gone up to 12 billion, then 18-25 billion, then it was 45 billion, and 50 billion, now $51 billion. but we are still over 100 days to the games so this will increase.
6. one road costs 8 billion over, a short road....no one is sure why it costs so much. the bribes may have been high.
7. no one is sure how much bribes has added to the cost estimates 30-55%. but no one knows for sure.
8. Socchi is the warmest part of Russia, same or warmer than Vancouver, Canada, so snow is not certain.
9. one man loss his ski resort that he built up from nothing over 17 years. the state took it over without compensation. he was always in court and was going to fight on further but was told he could be arrested, and become an old man in jail.
10. the ski jumping facility, was built and has to be re built and went widely over budget. they did not test the soil and just built it without any tests. it turns out they built it on a swamp. not good. some basic site preparation would have save billions.
anyways Russia should be able to put on a good games, and nothing comes easy in Russia. how much will the games cost in the end, who knows, $51 billion and counting, maybe $100 billion.
