The one you are watching is open to any kid from any country who speaks/spells English. The little cute brown headed girl who was second was from Canada, Alberta I believe.

six five, I meant is English the only language that has a spelling bee?

Yes, there is an annual Russian spelling bee for elementary school kids...not sure about any other countries...

Little kids do compete in French, but not necessarily little French kids....

"The two Chilean winners of the French spelling bee La Dict?e des Am?riques - organized by the Canadian Embassy in Chile last December - will travel to Quebec city to participate in the Grande Finale Internationale, which will take place on March 18th, 2006. Over one hundred representatives from countries in North America, Latin America and Africa will attend this event."


and there are spanish spelling bees in NYC and I'm sure other places in the US as well...
